Don't bother with this review - BUY THIS BOOK
By Alucard
I have been a huge vampire fan even before Anne Rice thought about her clan. I have probably read more vampire books than any other genre. Before I go forward, you need to know that I did read Twilight, hated it, and refuse to read any of the others (so if you like that series, pass on by). All of that said, I feel that this is the most exciting vampire book since the early Lestat books (the first two). The author's style is similar to Anne Rice's early works in that she really transports you to another time that is so rich in detail you feel like you are actually there. She also is able to take potentially stale Dracula characters and breath more life into them then even Bram Stoker did. While I enjoyed Dracula the Undead, now that I have read this I realize how lame that "offical" sequel was. I have never written a review for Amazon but feel compelled to get the word out on this one. Just Buy it.

The Tale of the Vampire Bride
By Angie
Told in a series of journal entries, The Tale of the Vampire Bride is the dark and frustrating story of Lady Glynis who becomes Count Dracula's newest bride. I thought I was going to really like it in the beginning, since Glynis is not ladylike at all. Her parents are having trouble marrying her off until a foreign count shows interest in her. But upon arriving at his castle, they know something is very off about the count. Dracula isn't about to let Glynis go, and uses his power to dispose of her family and trap her there with him and his three other brides. Glynis vows to escape even if it kills her.

The Tale of the Vampire Bride quickly lost my interest. The first half is incredibly violent and repetitive as Dracula abuses Glynis and forces her to become a vampire. Glynis also lost that spunk I loved (understandably so, given the situation), but she turned into this whiny child. She literally just stamped her foot and yelled "I hate you!" all the time. Wow, you tell him. She also said she was going to refuse to feed, but that she's hungry so she's going to feed, but after that she's refusing to feed. Um, what?! I really couldn't bring myself to care for her, because she was just so dang annoying!

Speaking of annoying, Dracula's other brides are infuriatingly dull! Of course, they love being vampires and love their "husband" and everything is so great and awesome! And they simply can't understand why Glynis is upset after he kidnapped her, murdered her family, killed her, raped her, and beat her. Whenever Glynis was crying or said she wanted to leave, they were all like "I don't get it." Not even joking. Like, is there anything going on in those brains of theirs? Obviously not. I expected them to be irritated with their new "sister" or jealous or resentful or something; not complete airheads.

I started to regain my interest in the second half though, since this is where Glynis and Dracula travel to Buda, where the blurb promises romance. Well, no. Unless you consider Glynis proclaiming her undying love to a complete stranger after five minutes a romance. She seriously meets this guy and is immediately in love, and she doesn't even learn his name until later. But she must be with him forever! And he must be with her forever! And then...they have like ten pages together, so I wasn't sold on this at all. Maybe that's how romance is developed in Gothic Horror. I don't know. If it is, then it's not for me.

But back to the characters of The Tale of the Vampire Bride. I liked how in the beginning, it was clear that Count Dracula was not the good guy. Vampires in this are dark and evil. They do not sparkle. They don't even smile. They have evil grins. But then Dracula changes and I did not believe these changes at all. They were so out of nowhere and out of character. I was like, what the heck just happened?! It was like he went from one extreme to the other.

The ending of The Tale of the Vampire Bride did get a bit exciting, even though it's back to the castle with the mindless wives and more "I hate you"-ing. Glynis finally takes action, but then...Well, it's like Horror Movie 101. The undead don't die that easily, and yet she doesn't do something that needs to be done and it ends. But it's obviously not the end because of reasons. *eye roll*

Great retelling of Dracula with twists
By K. Palmer
I so wanted to totally love this book! I love Dracula and this is a very inventive retelling of the classic tale from a female vampire's perspective - familiar yet with enough twists to keep you reading. The heroine is a wonderfully written character, with a vibrant personality, someone you can cheer on the whole way through the book. Filled with vivid descriptions the book transports you to the places described and makes the characters come alive. Unfortunately this vivid descriptive writing is also one of the books' big minuses for me, as multiple rape scenes are described in detail. This is not my sort of thing, after the first I thought ok it's in character and I can see how it may be useful for the plot, but again and again - not necessary reading. Once the plot changed locations the book became far more readable and I really began to enjoy the world created, I was looking forward to finding out how the intelligent heroine would outsmart her captor - sadly the ending didn't really do justice to the characters or the previous complex and entertaining plot. The ending felt unworthy of the book, and turned it from a good book into 'meh!' a bit disappointing. Overall a pretty good read, as long as you're not bothered by a mediocre ending and descriptions of forced intercourse.

Sexing Hardy: Thomas Hardy and Feminism (Thomas Hardy Studies), by Margaret Elvy

SEXING HARDY: THOMAS HARDY AND FEMINISM There are surprisingly few feminist analyses of the work of British novelist Thomas Hardy, and most do not get beyond vague notions of sexism and misogynism, in the Kate Millett and second wave feminist manner. Margaret Elvy's book, however, uses up-to-date research in the fields of cultural studies, feminist poetics, gay, lesbian and queer theory. This new, postmodern and incisive exploration of Thomas Hardy offers an exciting and radical reappraisal of the discourses of gender, desire, class, economy, socialization, identity and patriarchy in his fiction and poetry. This new edition of Sexing Hardy includes a new introduction and a new bibliography. EXTRACT FROM CHAPTER ONE: "THOMAS HARDY AND FEMINISM" Is Thomas Hardy a feminist? Are Thomas Hardy's works feminist? How much do his works reflect and bolster the patriarchal attitudes and beahviourof his era, and how much do they question them? What is the relationbetween Hardy and the feminists of his time? And what is the linkbetween Hardy's works and the feminism of the early 21st century? Thomas Hardy's theme is what you might call 'Wessexuality', 'Wes-sex-mania', Wessexualpolitics. Hardy's works are sexist, patriarchal and masculinist, and yet they question notions of sexism, gender, identity, patriarchy and masculinism. A text such as Tess of the d'Urbervilles is 'traditional', and follows patriarchal codes and morals. Yet it also questions them, and offers a number of feminist critiques of late 19th century society. In his letters, Thomas Hardy proposed feminist views; he wrote to feminists such as the suffragette leader Millicent Fawcett that a child was the mother's own business, not the father's (Collected Letters, 3, 238). One can see these feminist sentiments in, for example, Hardy's treatment of Tess in her motherhood: she works in the fields just a few weeks after the birth, even though she is melancholy (she seems to be suffering a mild form of post-natal depression). Tess further subverts patriarchy by taking her child's baptism into her own hands. She goes against her father, the vicar, and the whole church with her self-made baptism. [...] Thomas Hardy's novels were not always received favourably by women critics and readers. Hardy's own views, expressed outside of the novels, did not always square with those of feminists of the 1880s and 1890s. The ideological gap between Hardy and the women critics and feminists of the late 19th century is illustrated by Hardy's remark to Edmund Yates (in 1891): 'many of my novels have suffered so much from misrepresentation as being attacks on womankind' (Collected Letters, I, 250). Hardy hoped that works such as Tess of the d'Urbervilles would redress the balance. Illustrated. Bibliography and notes. ISBN 9781861710659. 194 pages. www.crmoon.com

HARDY THE FEMINIST
By Jeremy Robinson
Thomas Hardy was certainly something of a feminist - books like Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure prove that.
This is one of the few really interesting feminist studies of Thomas Hardy's fiction - I mean, there are quite a few books about Hardy's novels which take a feminist approach but some of them are pretty dry and academic (and they tell you stuff you knew already). Margaret Elvy's approach to Hardy's stories is refreshing, because it has absorbed the main elements of feminist literary criticism, and all that's been written about Hardy, but also has plenty to add to it.

Excellent thought piece.
By Freda A Coyner
C.S. Lewis wrote Mere Christianity and it is a well-thought out and well-used logical approach to Christian faith. J.B. Phillips New Testament Christianity takes a serious look at what this ought to look like as our lives are lived out. I highly recommend this book to anyone serious about wanting to walk in Jesus' footsteps and make a difference in our culture.

Get an Angel's point of view!
By Conciencious consumer #1
Phillips has several illustrations of God's love and grace. One lovely bit is a viewpoint of Christ's entrance to his creation from an Angels point of view.

Worth the paltry few bucks for a book by one as good as and a friend of C.S. Lewis
