Review
-- It does a good job of focusing on several topic areas that are important to manual therapists and other students of movement and function. The inclusion of various concepts of motion are not often found in massage therapy textbooks. Also it pairs a classical explanation of what muscles do with excellent explanations of surface anatomy, strength testing and discusses roles of the muscle beyond its action, such as its role in stabilization etc. All throughout, the text is supported by clear helpful photographs illustrated to show the movement more clearly. -- The tables are very good for detail oriented visual learners. Putting it into motion and Try This are great for the kinesthetic learner. -- The "Putting it into motion" section does a great job of addressing kinesthetic learners

Flipping the positive and negative mindset helps to make you think a bit more...
By Thomas Duff
Yes, I like self-improvement books as it only takes one or two ideas to radically change your approach and effectiveness in life. But if you read enough of them, it's a bit too easy to skim over certain things thinking "heard that, done that." Steve McDermott throws a curve ball in the genre by writing a book titled How to Be a Complete and Utter Failure in Life, Work & Everything: 44 1/2 Steps to Lasting Underachievement. Obviously, you know you're going to get improvement tips, but the framing of them in the negative helps to slow you down a bit...

McDermott's book consists of 44.5 chapters, or "steps", on how to continue along the same path of failure that the vast amount of people tread on a daily basis. So you start out with things like "Don't decide what you want. If you do decide what you want, don't think about why you want it. And if you do decide why you want it, commit to believing you can't have it." "Don't have any goals" is a pretty common theme for the less-than-stellar achievers in life, as is "Don't stop being an unthinking dog." Each step contains the negative exhortation, followed by a quote to avoid, details on why it's important not to do this particular step, and ending with actions not to take. The simple act of flipping the dominant idea from "do" to "don't" is enough to make you think a bit more about what he's actually telling you to do. Couple that with his very humorous writing style, and this book is not only useful but fun.

The only thing I found a bit strange/odd/difficult was the constant changing from the negative to the positive tense. Most of the chapter explains why that opposite reaction is used to accomplish greater things and be more effective. But he often changes from a "this is why this works" to a "so don't do it" so quickly that it makes for a difficult narrative flow. I still like the overall negative/positive angle, but you do have to work at some of the transitions to avoid thinking that you perhaps really *shouldn't* do what he's telling you not to do.

A fun read, well worth working through, especially for those who have an aversion to these types of books. At least if you fail, you'll have someone to look up to now. :)

Motivated? Phah! I can't be motivated!

I've been through a heat of self-development philosophies in my numerous years in this world, but none quite like this one. I would have thought I was wise enough to see through the reverse-psychology ploy, but from the beginning of this delightfully easy read and entertaining book made a miracle happen - a smile - and I felt energised to reflect on some areas in my life where I may have left to soak and may need a good frothing! I was privileged enough to catch Steve live -- and he's as charming as he is in the book. A good read and a must for anyone who feels stuck in a rut.

A funny look at serious issues
By M. L Lamendola
What a delightful book. McDermott has wit on par with Monty Python and insight on par with Tom Rogers. Using reverse logic, McDermott provides a treasure trove of solid advice under the guise of comically telling you how to fail. This makes the reader think about the actual point being made, and that process aids in remembering. McDermott also helps the reader's memory by including pithy quotations.

The book weighs in at 196 pages, and consists of 44 short chapters (chapter 44 is labeled 44 1/2). Each chapter addresses a specific step to take if you want to ensure you are a complete and utter failure. These include such things as:

* Don't do things on purpose.
* Don't spend any of your time on the future.
* Don't involve other people.
* Don't commit to lifelong learning.

These are precisely the things that differentiate successful people from those who merely glide along (or worse). By assuming the position of wanting to be a failure, McDermott has some fun while also bringing up issues all of us should take seriously.

Each chapter starts with a relevant quote, such as this one from Chapter Five: "Never let your memories be greater than your dreams." (Doug Ivestor). In keeping with the "how to fail" theme, these are designated "Quote to Avoid."

McDermott talks about how you can avoid whatever it is that chapter advises you against. In doing this, he addresses the excuses people use for not doing those things (as if these are the correct reasons), resources to avoid, steps not to take, habits not to form, and so forth. He sums up each chapter with a box called "Action not to take." Of course, if you do the opposite of all this you will be a success rather than a failure.

The text also contains instructive anecdotes from people who have succeeded (McDermott cautions you not to do whatever it is they did) and those who have failed (follow their pattern and do what they did, McDermott advises).

Like many self-help or self-improvement books, this one is light reading. But that's not because it lacks substance. It's because the author uses plain language and writes clearly, and the book is not quite a couple hundred pages. If you're into reading these kinds of books, this is a good one to add to your collection. You may want to read one chapter a day for 44 days.

The effort McDermott put forth to serve the reader is evident. This isn't a fluff piece for selling on McDermott's rubber chicken circuit. The book stands on its own as easily worth its price.

And there's something more that puts this book in rare company. McDermott is a speaker and author in the U.K., so he doesn't have the bad American author habit of lacing a "nonfiction" book with unrelated personal political views. Missing also is the now common presentation of disinformation as fact.

At one time, the absence of these things was unremarkable and expected. Today, the absence is both remarkable and pleasantly surprising. This is the kind of writing that helps build a book-reading population, something that has unfortunately been on the decline for years.

The Principal: Three Keys to Maximizing Impact, by Michael Fullan

Over the past two decades, Michael Fullan has written influentially about the change that school and district leaders must bring about as formalized achievement standards and new technology transform how schools are run. What he hasn't done until now is explore and discuss in detail how and why the principal's role itself must change.

Principals are often called the second most crucial in-school influencers (after teachers) of student learning. But what should the principal do in order to maximize student achievement? In The Principal, Fullan explains why the answer lies neither in micromanaging instruction nor in autonomous entrepreneurialism. He also shows systematically how the principal's role must change and demonstrates how it can be done in short order, at scale.

Fullan shows how principals have been boxed into a narrow role that undercuts their ability to develop the whole school. He sheds light on how, in times of crisis, it's all too easy for principals to do the wrong thing - to take actions that are ineffective or even counterproductive, particularly when they don't feel entirely in charge. But even in the toughest of external conditions, he shows, there is always leeway for action. Fullan explains how to choose the right versus wrong drivers - loosening focus on accountability and instead concentrating on capacity building.

The author explains the three key roles that administrators must play in order to have the biggest impact on student achievement - the learning leader, the district and system player, and the change agent. Throughout The Principal are "action items" to help leaders implement Fullan's program effectively as well as provocative discussion questions that enhance the book's usefulness in professional development and leadership courses.

An Excellent Thought-Provoking Book to Spark Discussion on Principal's Role in Change
By John Robinson
After over a decade, policies relying on high stakes testing as a means to drive more effective teaching specifically and a better education generally have become embedded in public education. Fullan (2014) says we have gotten it all wrong. In his book, The Principal: Three Keys to Maximizing Impact, Fullan points out that these federal initiatives have failed to bring about extensive instructional change because they use the wrong policy drivers to try to change education. In other words, we simply aren’t getting the kinds of change we want in education because we are focusing on the wrong things to make that change happen. What should we be doing to maximize impact on schools? According to Fullan, we need to “reposition the role of the principal as overall instructional leader so that it maximizes the learning of all teachers and in turn all students” (p. 6). To do this, Fullan indicates we need to focus on three key aspects of the principal’s role: 1) Leading Learning, 2) Being a District and Team Player, and 3) Becoming a Change Agent.

Beginning in “Chapter One Outmoded,” Fullan describes both the current problem in education, and he introduces the idea of reconceptualizing the role of principal. According to Fullan, the current problem in education is that the “conditions for mutual learning have been seriously eroding” (p. 5). Students are increasingly bored and disengaged from schooling, as indicated by the fact that “schooling alienates two-thirds of kindergarten students by the time they reach ninth grade” (p. 5). Teacher satisfaction in their work continues to decline (p. 5). Even the job satisfaction of principals, who see their jobs as being too complex and too stressful, has been dropping since 2008 from 68% to 59% (p. 5). According to Fullan, this problem in education is due to an improper conceptualization of the role of the principal that is confusing and actually inhibits the professional learning of teachers and in turn the learning of students (p. 6).

In chapter two of the book, Fullan focuses on what he terms the “Four Wrong Choices for Driving Policy.” The four “Wrong Choices for Driving Policy” are: accountability, individualistic solutions, technology, and fragmented strategies” (p. 22). Each of these choices, according to Fullan, is more a part of the problem, than a solution. For example, one of these wrong policy drivers includes current accountability strategies, which involve the belief that by tightening accountability through standards, standardized testing, and tying performance to test scores, student performance will improve. The problem with this approach to forcing educational change, according to Fullan, is that it assumes professional capacity is already there, which is not always the case (p. 27). Teachers and principals may lack the expertise to bring about learning gains with the students they have or the environment in which they’re teaching. According to Fullan, Principals in schools driven by these accountability policies are forced to simply “get better at a bad game” where you do what you can “to please the higher-ups in order to protect your staff and yourself” (p. 28). Fullan takes readers through each of these “wrong drivers” and explains exactly how that are negatively impacting education and actually keeping educators from getting the results they seek and preventing principals from leading schools the way they should.

If these “wrong drivers” of policy aren’t working, what exactly is Fullan’s solution? In Chapter Three, he begins describing what he calls the “The First Key for Maximixing Impact” which is the first of his three solutions for principals. The first key is “Leading Learning.” In a nutshell, Fullan describes how principals can focus on building the professional capacity of the whole teaching staff rather than focusing on individual teachers. As he points out, principals should spend their time developing the group, not focusing on individual teachers because that is where the greatest learning gains for all will occur. Principals need to lead the professional learning of the teachers in a school as a group. They do this by leading “the school’s teachers learning how to improve their teaching while learning alongside them about what works and what doesn’t” (p. 55). According to Fullan, Principals should focus on capacity, climate, community, and instruction to maximize the learning in the school.
In chapter four, Fullan describes his second key for maximizing impact which is “Being a District and System Player.” He describes how principals need to do such things as “looking without to improve,” “foster intradistrict development,” “create district coherence,” and “reaching out beyond the district for expertise” (p. 97). When “looking without to improve,” principals need to foster network connections outside the school but within the district to access new ideas and practices. When “fostering intradistrict development,” principals need to connect teachers in order to exchange ideas across the district. When “creating district coherence,” principals work together under the guidance of the whole district to improve all the schools. Finally, when “reaching out beyond the district for expertise,” principals connect to external sources, outside the district, for innovative ideas. In each of these instances, Fullan suggests that principals can maximize their impact on their schools by engaging the system in building professional capacity of teachers.

In chapter five, Fullan describes his third and final key for principals to maximize impact on their schools. This key is “Becoming a Change Agent” (p. 123). Fullan argues that principals must focus on building their own professional capacity of becoming a change agent by fostering seven professional capacities for making change happen, which he describes in detail. For example, capacity one is “Challenging the Status Quo” which involves such things as questioning common practices, taking risks, exploring innovations, and avoiding letting the rules slow down the action” (p. 129). Fullan argues that principals need to foster their own capacity of challenging the status quo in their efforts to become a change agent. The rest of chapter five is devoted to describing these professional capacities for becoming a change agent in order to maximize impact on schools.
Fullan’s final chapter offers a glimpse of what the future holds for principals as they face the unpredictable world of ambiguity that education has become. He offers some parting advice for principals on how to maximize their impact on schools by focusing on the digital revolution and what it’s doing to schools and the Common Core Standards and how they affecte the role of principals who want to have the greatest impact on their schools.

Fullan’s book The Principal: Three Keys to Maximizing Impact offers principals and district administrators a full view of how current education policy is failing to bring about the results desired, and he offers a research-based approach using three key strategies to maximize impact. Each of the strategies taps into current educational leadership research and provides school leaders a “practical guide” to implement change. Fullan’s book powerfully provokes thought for school leaders on how the principal can best impact learning in her school.

Puzzling -
By Loyd Eskildson
The author contends that an early focus on accountability, individual teacher and leadership quality, and technology are the wrong drivers of school system improvement. They're more a part of the problem than a solution. This approach assumes professional capacity is already there - not always the case. Instead, we should 'reposition the role of principal as overall instructional leader so that it maximizes the learning of all teachers and in turn all students.' The current problem in education is that the 'conditions for mutual learning have been seriously eroding' - students are increasingly bored and disengaged from schooling - indicated by the fact that 'schooling alienates two-thirds of kindergarten students by the time they reach ninth grade.' At the same time, teacher satisfaction in their work declines, as well as that of principals.

Fullan instead suggests that principals focus on building the professional capacity of the whole teaching staff, rather than that of individual teachers, while learning alongside them about what works and what doesn't. Another recommendation is that principals foster network connections outside the school but within the district to access new ideas, fostering intra-district development. Principals also should connect to external sources for innovative ideas. His third key for principals is that of 'Becoming a Change Agent' - starting with 'Challenging the Status Quo' (questioning common practices, taking risks, exploring innovations.

The puzzling part in all this is that it seems to suggest that colleges of education have little to offer, and that educators are thereby condemned to playing out the role of trying to feel their way forward. That may be true, but it certainly undercuts that role of teacher certification and paying extra for coursework beyond one's original B.A. degree, as well as additional years of experience. Worse yet, given the variability in pupils and teachers, the trying to make sense out of the resulting variation in pupil performance within any reasonable class size would be impossible, and create endless racing down blind alleys.

Fullan's recommendations are drawn from the experience of Canada's Ontario province. When Dalton McGuinty became premier in 2003, the government encouraged schools to set their own targets and sent experienced teams to help them get there. Schools with large numbers of immigrant children could apply for special help. Every school had to improve - showing in regular inspections that it was making progress. Since 2004, funding increased by 30%. Early on, the government moved to ensure smaller classes - a strategy that has repeatedly been demonstrated as ineffectual throughout the world. Another strategy - secondary schools established success teams that provided particular attention to students who may be at risk.

Ontario's graduation rate increased from 68% in 2003-04 to 795 in 2008-09, while the number of students meeting/exceeding the provincial standards has increased from 54% in 2003 to 67% in 2009; however, there has been no improvement in Grade 3 reading since 2006, only a 2% increase in Grade 3 mathematics and a 4% increase in Grade 3 writing. (Perhaps manipulation of cut scores?) Yet, Canadian pupils far outperform their U.S. counterparts, especially in math.

Another source of puzzlement - Fullan's prescriptions (light on having the principal serve as the 'education leader') is contradicted by practices and results in leading charter schools.

A Fantastic New Look at Principalship
By James Hiller
As a person in a grad school program to become an educational administer, I have to say that this book is not only full of good, practical advice, but has been one of the best books I've read about the job to date. By giving three tasks that principals need to follow: leading learning at the building level, becoming a district and system player, and being a change agent. It is not only informative, but personally inspirational. After reading this book, one believes that despite the complexities and hardships of the job, one can and should do it. Highly recommended!

Introduction

This is the book I wish I had a couple years ago when I sat down and decided to learn something about web applications. The transition from programming standard window-system GUI applications to writing dynamic web applications was surprisingly complicated. Extremely productive languages such as PHP make the transition easier, but the learning curve remains steep.

With that in mind, I sat down to write this book and explain how to use the various technologies that go into writing web applications. I have made every mistake possible while learning about PHP and databases, and have therefore tried to incorporate as much of what I learned into this book. Far too many books published these days are merely a reprint of existing documentation or UNIX man pages, and I truly wanted to see something different in print.

The technologies, however, are only half the battle. Without strategies or systematic approaches to design and implementation, applications are doomed to an expensive and messy existence at best—or failure at worst. Therefore, this book focuses on a lot of things you might not see covered to the same extent in other books—design, testing, and security.

Target Audience

This book is targeted at people who need or want to write a web application. You might be a corporate developer looking to build an intranet application for your company or an Internet web application for customers. You might be a consultant helping a small business develop a web store, or just a hobbyist looking to learn more about web applications and write one of your own.

The assumption is that you have at least a passing familiarity with programming, although this book by no means expects you to be an expert. An understanding of basic programming constructs, such as variables and functions, and a basic understanding of HTML should be more than sufficient.

Because I knew next to nothing about databases when I started learning about web application programming, I likewise expect no more of the reader. This book covers databases from basic terminology and design to basic and advanced queries, with an appropriate balance between clear-and-simple instruction and interesting examples to help you in your development.

About PHP

PHP began in 1994 as a series of scripts called PHP/FI (Personal Home Page/Forms Interpreter), and it was written by a fellow named Rasmus Lerdorf to help him manage documents on his web site. Over the years, PHP grew into something more serious. In 1997, a second version of the system came out with additional functionality.

In late 1998, PHP 3.0 was released, leading to a major rewrite of the code and the involvement of two new developers—Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans. The goal was to support progressively broader and more complex applications on the web. In early 2000, version 4.0 was released. Based on a new language engine called the Zend Engine, this version had much better performance and increased code modularity. By late 2004, the much-evolved version 5.0 was released. It included many new features, such as new language constructs, broader web server support, sessions, and additional third-party extensions. Among the new language features was a significantly improved and expanded object-oriented programming model, which this book uses extensively. Somewhere along the way, PHP ceased to refer to "Personal Home Page" and came to mean "PHP Hypertext Preprocessor," a so-called recursive acronym. (The acronym actually forms part of the term it defines!)

PHP is a remarkably productive language—you can sit down and crank out (yes, that's the technical term) large amounts of code in a short period of time, and this productivity is what drew me to it some years back. With PHP, I was able to put together surprisingly robust and dynamic travelogues of my journeys to various countries with relatively little code.

The one possible "fly in the ointment" is that the language can be quirky compared to other programming languages—especially if you, like me, come from a background of languages more similar to C/C++, Java, or Visual BASIC. In fact, many of the things covered in this book are the result of my sitting around and scratching my head for a couple of hours. However, after you become comfortable with it, the language proves fun to write and is surprisingly powerful.

Layout

This book is divided into six parts, which represents the logical progression of writing web applications.

Part I, "The Basics of PHP," covers the PHP language itself, starting with descriptions and discussions of the most basic types of language. Part I then moves on to functions, code structure, and object-oriented programming—before finishing off with a discussion of arrays and strings.

Part II, "Database Basics," covers databases, starting with terminology and progressing through design and data definition. Part II finishes by describing the use of databases and tables, ranging from the most basic queries to transactions and functions.

Part III, "Planning Web Applications," takes a step back from coding to discuss the design of your web applications. Many people get so involved in writing their code that they forget to sit down and actually think about it in advance. These chapters (hopefully) give you something to think about as you begin. This part also focuses heavily on securing your applications, as it is not something to be taken lightly.

Part IV, "Implementing Your Web Application," discusses the more advanced language features and concepts required to move beyond simple PHP and databases into writing web applications, covering topics such as errors, sessions, and XML—including plenty of sample code.

Part V, "Sample Projects and Further Ideas," presents three full web application samples that start with a simple appointment management system, progress through a web log system, and finish with an ecommerce store. These samples incorporate much of what the book has covered and are designed to be robust. Instead of killing large numbers of trees and listing all the code for the samples, you can download and run them. The book shows you only the most salient sections of the code and leaves you to download and run them in completion.

Part VI, "Appendixes," discusses the installation of the necessary software to run your web applications and how to perform various database actions on different database engines, and suggests some additional reading material.

Before You Begin

Before you begin reading the meat of this book, please take a moment to open the CD that accompanies this book and copy the source code to your computer. The phpwasrc/ directory contains the initial files you need.

In addition to the full source code (and installation instructions) for the three large samples from Part V of the book, there are also small snippets of code to accompany many of the chapters in the book. You can run these, debug them, or change and play with them to further help you learn how the language works.

Beyond the sample sources, the CD contains versions of PHP, the Apache HTTP Server, and MySQL that you can use to install the software on your local machine. Instructions are included on the CD.

Nice strategic overview
By John A. Suda
"Core Web Application Development with PHP and MySQL" is an intermediate to advanced-level guide for programmers and developers. It bills itself as "everything one needs to know about building robust database applications". That is a bit of puffery but this is a comprehensive practical guide for designing and building production-quality, database-enabled applications.

The author is an open-source platform expert and software developer. He comes from a background of working with standard desktop Windows-based applications and made the transition to building dynamic web applications. His experience in making the transition informs this book as a comprehensive explanation of how to use the various technologies that go into writing web applications. For those making similar transitions, this is a very fine presentation done by a thoughtful, systematic designer. For those already busy in the PHP/MySQL area, the advanced level of instruction is likely to be valuable.

The emphasis is on open-source applications, particularly PHP5 and MySQL in an XHTML/Javascript environment. But, beyond technologies, the author's focus is on the strategies and systematic approach one needs to design and implement successful web applications. He writes for an advanced audience which is already basically familiar with programming and XHTML. Those writing or planning dynamic web applications will benefit most from the book.

There are 33 chapters in five parts - basics of PHP, database basics, planning web applications, implementation, and sample projects. There are three appendices covering installation and configuration of PHP, MySQL, and other related open-source applications like Apache, a set of charts of database function equivalents among the leading database types - MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and a short list of recommended reading.

This is a large format book of 912 pages, including index. My reviewer's copy is a prepublication version containing grayscale graphics and much white space, especially around the code snippets, making reading easy and comfortable. Although the material is high-level and technical, the writing seems light and casual. Wandschneider's writing style flows easily, never bogs down even with technical details, and the book reads much faster than one might expect.

Although the best part of the book contains the three start-to-finish sample projects at the end - a calendar system, weblog engine, and e-commerce store, the lead-in chapters are nicely done, too. Chapters 1 and 2 are about getting started in PHP. There is a brief comparison to perl and C++, but the bulk is about PHP terminology and programming concepts. Much is made of PHP5's new object-oriented features, but the discussions of that here (and in Chapter 4) was about the only parts which I feel needed more clarity - the rest of the chapters are very clearly stated and contain plenty of good examples.

Chapters 3 - 7 continue with scripting concepts like functions, classes, arrays, strings and characters. The discussion is not designed to instruct comprehensively about PHP itself but works on a higher level of showing how PHP interacts with MySQL and other technologies on an overall basis. You can get detailed PHP coding instructions elsewhere. Chapter 6 contains an unusually good discussion of character sets, usable for global applications, and provides instructions on configuring Unicode and multi-byte support for high-level applications.

Part 2, Chapters 8 - 12, take the same approach to MySQL and databases in general. They include discussion of basic terminology and concepts, designing and creating databases, storing and retrieving data, PHP-to-database connectivity, and advanced topics, like use of "transactions" and advanced querying.

Part 3, Chapters 13 - 17, deal with the server-side matters. Again, the level of presentation is not on comprehensive details of PHP, MySQL, and web services, but present a comprehensive overview to guide planning, design, and implementation. Here the author states overall design considerations of a website noting how to incorporate CSS, HTML, code libraries, user interfaces, and web services into a working dynamic website.

User management and security concerns are noted throughout the book and Chapters 14 - 17 deal specifically with validation, and software and hardware security, including tips on how to secure your server. These passages on security are some of the better and clearest written I've experienced in this area.

Part IV continues the systematic approach to website construction discussing error handling, debugging, cookies, and sessions (again some of the clearest explanations I've read), authorization, and data validation with regular expressions. Chapter 21 is entirely about globalization and localization that is, dealing with the fact that the Internet is global and that there is a need to deal with foreign language sets. There are tips on how to determine users' locations and how to script to account for different language sets, including Unicode.

Chapters 23 and 27 are about XML and are especially useful now that XML and XHTML are becoming the reigning protocols of dynamic web activity. There is an extensive sample of using XML to work with the Google API. Using XML with PHP is an advanced topic and it is only generally covered here, together with XML web services and SOAP. Other chapters cover the use of extensions to PHP, like PEAR, developing a coding "style", creating test suites, configuring PHP.ini, and more. The three working examples are extensively commented and contain complete code examples.

The book comes with a comparison CD-ROM containing all of the sample code, and versions of PHP5, MySQL, and Apache HTTP server.

Developing applications instead of standalone pages...
By Thomas Duff
I had a blog reader email me today and ask if I knew of any good books on PHP and MySQL. Being that I'd like to learn more about both of those subjects myself, I recently had requested (and had sitting in my review pile) a copy of Core Web Application Development With PHP And MySQL by Mark Wandschneider. If you're focused on *application development* (rather than just learning how to create a dynamic page), then this book works pretty well...

Contents:

Part 1 - The Basics of PHP: Getting Started with PHP; The PHP Language; Code Organization and Reuse; Object-Oriented Programming; Working with Arrays; Strings and Characters of the World; Interacting with the Server - Forms

Part 2 - Database Basics: Introduction to Databases; Designing and Creating Your Database; Using Databases - Storing and Retrieving Data; Using Databases - Advanced Data Access; PHP and Data Access

Part 3 - Planning Web Applications: Web Applications and the Internet; Implementing a User Interface; User Management; Securing Your Web Applications - Planning and Code Security; Securing Your Web Applications - Software and Hardware Security

Part 4 - Implementing Your Web Applications: Error Handling and Debugging; Cookies and Sessions; User Authentication; Advanced Output and Output Buffering; Data Validation with Regular Expressions; XML and XHTML; Files and Directories; File Uploading; Working with Dates and Times; XML Web Services and SOAP; Using PEAR; Development and Deployment

Part 5 - Sample Projects and Further Ideas: Strategies for Successful Web Applications; An Appointment Manager; A Blogging Engine; An Ecommerce Application

Appendixes: Installation/Configuration; Database Function Equivalents; Recommended Reading

Index

I differentiated the type of learning at the start of this review on purpose. It's pretty easy to go into learning a new language focusing solely on the nuts and bolts of the syntax. That's really not the pattern that's followed with this book. You don't just learn how to add some PHP code to your page in order to display the time of day to the user. The goal here is to learn how to build an *application* instead of just a single dynamic page. The layout and flow of the book supports that goal well. You start with basic PHP concepts and syntax. Then you move on to basic database concepts that are used in MySQL (and in fact *any* relational database system). Once those two basic skill sets are covered, then the blending occurs. You start learning how to use PHP to read and store data in MySQL, and those concepts are then used to build an end-to-end application. Throw in the essentials of securing your application and making it bulletproof for users, and you have a pretty encompassing guide for a development professional to use.

If PHP and MySQL were going to be something I used on a regular basis, I'd follow up this book with two specific titles for PHP and MySQL. Even though this Core title is large, there's no way it can cover all the details on either subject. And in reality, I don't think you'd want that if this is your first exposure. A practical volume such as this one will get you thinking correctly as far as design and techniques go, and then you can decide if this is where you want to commit your time and resources.

Nicely done book, and one I'd recommend for your first PHP/MySQL experience. I'll be revisiting this book myself in 2006 in order to pick up a few more skills...

I bought this one as my first choice
By William J. Turgeon
As a beginner seeking to develop as much beginning-to-intermediate knowledge and information about PHP and MySQL as possible in the coming two months, I went to local book stores to see all the titles offered on these two topics -- and to select the best.

"Core Web Application Development with PHP and MySQL" by Marc Wandschneider was the book I bought. -- [Jump down to later portions of this review if you don't want to read about how terrific the page layouts are.]

This newly published title offers the perfect blend of depth, high readability, quality writing, and outstandingly handsome and clean page design and layout -- a significant attribute in the face of so many computer books on store shelves with layouts that are so cramped, ugly, cluttered and dense.

Many computer books offer wasted galaxies of white space wrapped around text which itself has been reduced to microscopically small unreadability. In contrast, this book utilizes white space in perfect elegance and moderation. The typeface is never too tiny, and it changes frequently in helpful and readable ways. The author owes the editor and designer a high debt of gratitude for the rare and incredible job of page design.

OK, Yes, the Contents: As a motivated beginner I cannot fully address the technical content itself (since I have yet to master it), but I recognize good books -- and well-written books -- when I see them. This is one. -- [Another review located here provides a detailed breakdown of the contents, chapter-by-chapter.]

In my estimation, this book is targeted to the motivated beginner through high intermediate user, and I only say high intermediate because this generous book of 787 pages does not strive to be the super overly-complete master compendium bible on PHP and MySQL, but only a highly accessible and informative one, while still offering the reader a very nice learning curve for growth, challenge and involvement.

The essence of this book is captured in this phrase: "Challenging content; invitingly written; easily digested."

The author is to be thanked for the wonderfully clear and straightforward foundational explanations he provides in the text before bringing readers into the heart of each chapter. Those central parts of each chapter are momentarily beyond my capacity, but the outstanding introductory material at the start of almost every chapter is an immensely useful service to the motivated beginner.

Soon as I give myself a brush-up on X/HTML tags and some generic programming/coding concepts like functions and variables and calls and loops and conditionals and arrays, this beginner will be nicely prepared to dig most productively into this terrific new offering of a book.

PS -- If the beginner is not striving to be "super system administrator supreme," then by adding the above book to these several others below, he/she will have a great beginning collection by which to get a confident handle on MySQL and PHP programming concepts and skills:

-- Learning PHP 5 by David Sklar (O'Reilly)

-- PHP 5 in easy steps by Mike McGrath (Barnes & Noble!)

-- MySQL Essential Skills by John Horn/Michael Grey (McGraw Hill/Osborne)

-- MySQL Complete Reference -- Vikram Vaswani (McGraw Hill/Osborne)

Yes, I do know what the super-comprehensive "bibles" on MySQL/PHP are, and some are very successful and I may use some of them in future, but I find that I usually NEVER read "the big bibles" all the way through.

In contrast, you (if a beginner) will definitely enjoy reading the above five volumes ALL the way through, especially this delicious title at hand: "Core Web Application Development with PHP and MySQL" by Marc Wandschneider.

Review

The most valuable exposition of Marx and Engels which has yet to be written in English.

(The New Republic)

From the Back Cover
In this brilliant work, first published in 1936, Sydney Hook seeks to resolve one of the classic problems of European intellectual history: how the political radicalism and philosophical materialism of Karl Marx issued from the mystical and conservative intellectual system of G.W.F. Hegel. From Hegel to Marx traces the writings of the young Marx from is early Hegelianism until the genesis of his own distinctive world-view on the eve of the European revolutions of 1848. Rather than merely compare Hegel and Marx, Hook recreates Marx's debates with his associates and contemporaries of the late 1830's and early 1840's, known collectively as the Young Hegelians: Moses Hess, Bruno and Edgar Bauer, Arnold Ruge, Max Stirner and Ludwig Feuerbach. Marx only arrived at his theory of historical materialism, Hook argues, through a series of critical exchanges with each of the Young Hegelians.

From Hegel to Marx-
By A Customer
Sidney Hook analyzes the two philosophers utilizing opposition among Hegelian and Marxist theory: ethical idealism, dialectics, and continuity. This allows the reader to adopt the differences between the two influential authors, thereby introducing major theories written by Marx and Hegel. The remaining chapters interject comparisons between Karl Marx and esteemed German philosophers who studied Hegel, contributed or correlated with Marxist philosophy. Overall, the text forms an essential basis to the understanding and development of Marxist philosophy, and the struggles of a young-Hegelian in the nineteenth century.

The world of the Young Hegelians
By John C. Landon
This is still one of the most interesting treatments of the development of German classical philosophy from Hegel to Marx via the world of the Young Hegelians in the generation after the death of Hegel up to the revolutions of 1848. The string of remarkable figures, Strauss, Bauer, Ruge, Stirner, Hess, and Feuerbach, with whom Marx interacted needs a careful account from someone like Hook, although there have been a number of more recent accounts.

This first of two volumes looks at the pioneering work of British and German designers and manufacturers, starting with the very first jet engines designed by Frank Whittle before World War Two. Technical details are set in their matrix of events, personalities, politics and world history. I would recommend this book. By virtue of its size it is somewhat limited in scope. There is a fair amount of orginal research.

fine book on an not so usual subject
By Gacon Jean-yves
there are only few books devoted entirely to the history of aircraft engines. This one is a thoroughly complete and accurate description of the birth and growth of turbojet engines in the two countries which pioneered, almost in parallel, jet propulsion for aircraft.

A Good Review from Existing Sources
By Zane R. Nobbs
A very thorough review of jet-engine and jet-aircraft development in the United Kingdom and Germany. Every conceivable development of the jet-engine is covered including: the turbojet, turboprop, gas-turbine, ram jet, thermopropulsion units, pulse-jet and injection engines. The selection of aircraft and their powerplants is impressive.

Unfortunately the book seems to continue the British resentment at Germany and Italy putting out jet-powered aircraft prior to the United Kingdom. The longest portion focuses on development in the United Kingdom, which did lead the globe in jet development in the 1940s, but in this and the second volume, other nations shortcomings seem to become a side focus.

Overall it is an excellent book for those doing research on historic avaition and/or those modelling the early jets. It would be nice to see a Volume 3 of nations that came later with their jet aircraft too.
