The Second Intelligent Species: How Humans Will Become as Irrelevant as Cockroaches, by Marshall Brain

Right now, as far as we can tell, there is exactly one intelligent species in the universe and it is us: human beings. We currently see no evidence of any kind indicating that extraterrestrials exist outside of our solar system.

But at this moment, millions of engineers, scientists, corporations, universities and entrepreneurs are racing to create the second intelligent species right here on planet earth. And we can see the second intelligent species coming from all directions in the form of self-driving cars, automated call centers, chess-playing and Jeopardy-playing computers that beat all human players, airport kiosks, restaurant tablet systems, etc.

The frightening thing is that these robots will soon be eliminating human jobs in startling numbers. The first wave of unemployed workers is likely to be a million truck drivers who are replaced by self-driving trucks. Pilots will be eliminated soon as well. Then, as new computer vision systems come online, we will see tens of millions of workers in retail stores, fast food restaurants and construction sites replaced by robots. Unless we take steps now to change the economy, we will soon have tens of millions of workers who are unemployed and seeking welfare because they will have no other choice.

Marshall Brain's new book "The Second Intelligent Species: How Humans Will Become as Irrelevant as Cockroaches" explores how the future will unfold as the second intelligent species emerges. The book answers questions like:
- How will new computer vision systems affect the job market?
- How many people will become unemployed by the second intelligent species?
- What will happen to millions of newly unemployed workers?
- How can modern society and modern economies cope with run-away unemployment caused by robots?
- What will happen when the first sentient, conscious computer appears?
- What moral and ethical principles will guide the second intelligent species?
- Why do we see no extraterrestrials in our universe?

"The Second Intelligent Species" offers a unique and fascinating look at the future of the human race, and the choices we will need to make to avoid massive unemployment and poverty worldwide as intelligent machines start eliminating millions of jobs.

Interesting but flawed
By Timothy M. Arends
What to make of this book? It was a fairly interesting read, despite several glaring flaws.

The subtitle,"How humans will become as irrelevant as cockroaches" was somewhat misleading. The author does not think that humans will become irrelevant so much as obsolete. That is, he thinks that artificial intelligence will ultimately cater to us night and day, satisfy our every material need and solve all of our most pressing problems.

The author makes a pretty good case that the rise of artificial intelligence will lead to technological unemployment, starting with the elimination of the jobs of truck drivers by autonomous self driving trucks. From there, thanks to machine vision, he thinks that many or most human jobs will be eliminated or rendered obsolete by the end of the 2030s.

One of the problems I have with the book is that the writing style is flabby. The author uses far more words than is necessary to make his case. A good editor could probably have reduced the size of this book by 25% or more by eliminating unnecessary verbiage.

For example, the author, in giving a hypothetical example of aliens from outerspace interviewing the public, is not satisfied with simply saying that they will interview "everyone." Instead, he has to give a long, bulleted list (the author is very fond of bulleted lists) of virtually every type of person he could think of– janitors, ditchdiggers, people living in slums, doctors, lawyers, fast food workers, conservatives, liberals, et cetera -- this list stretches on for nearly two full pages.

Similarly, the author is not satisfied with merely stating that artificial intelligence will help us with all of our problems; he must include another long, bulleted list naming those problems, as if we don't know what they are already (to a large degree, the book reads as if it was written for fifth-graders).

In discussing the plight of truck drivers, the author is not satisfied with saying the media will ignore the drivers' complaints, but he has to unnecessarily bring politics into the matter by naming well-known conservative commentators (but not liberals).

The weak writing is a surprise, considering that this is not the author's first book. Perhaps the better part of being a good writer is having a good editor, but the author obviously failed in this regard, which is surprising, since, as a multimillionaire, he could certainly have afforded to hire the best editors.

A somewhat more serious criticism is it the book offers a somewhat myopic point of view. For example, the author discusses artificial intelligence at great length but practically ignores nanotechnology, which will prove to be either a fantastic boon or a fantastic threat. He also completely ignores the considerable existential threat that super artificial intelligence may present to mankind, as explored in books such as those by Nick Bostrom.

In Chapter 10 - "Why Are There No Extraterrestrials?" the author hypothesizes that the reason we have never made contact with extraterrestrials is that they, too, once they become advanced enough, will have developed advanced artificial intelligence and will then enter into a "quiescent" state in which all of their needs will be satisfied and they will have no desire to explore or conquer the rest of the universe.

This flies in the face of Ray Kurzweil's theory that, as artificial intelligence advances, it will seek to expand and spread outwards into the rest of the universe, eventually "saturating" it with intelligence. Perhaps the author does not agree with Kurzweil's theory, but he has surely heard of it, and the fact that he makes no mention or refutation of it is peculiar.

In summary, I find this an interesting book, but one that, because of its flaws, is much less than what it could have been.

If you enjoyed Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom you will really enjoy this ...
By Bud Taylor
If you enjoyed Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom you will really enjoy this book. Nick's book is more academic and has awakened many like Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking. However Marshall does an excellent job of providing likely scenarios that will result from the application of exponential technologies. Good examples will be the likely elimination of many job classes, such as 1-2 million truck drivers, 15 million retail jobs, 3 million fast food jobs, 6 million construction jobs, 3 million teaching jobs and 10 million manufacturing jobs. All these millions will be without jobs and virtually no other employment opportunities which will present enormous societal challenges.

Marshall provides some compelling evidence that the second intelligent electronic species is nearly a guaranteed inevitability as one day researchers will replicate self-recursive human intelligence and consciousness. Authors like Diamondis who wrote Bold and Abundance would counter some of Marhsall's speculation but I believe he provides some fairly compelling arguments.

I enjoyed science fiction as a child, over fifty years ago, but have since nearly exclusively restricted my reading to non fiction, especially after medical school. However i was really pleasantly surprised by the end of the book which I actually enjoyed more than the beginning.. I had long forgotten that fiction has the potential to convey future potential better than non-fiction. I was surprised at how likely some of the items written about could be and are not at all addressed in current science projections. The Australia Project is an alternative to the dystopian artificial general intelligence future that results from objective and rational electronic intelligence controlling all of society. The Project was designed to create heaven on earth or the closest approximation possible. The designs the book describes are really visionary and something I have never contemplated or previously read. That alone is worth the read.

I won't spoil it for you with the details but you simply must read the last part of the book. Absolutely one of the best $1 bargains out there

Marshall Brain Doesn't Sugar Coat Reality
By ilaksh
Great book. This is going to be tough for a lot of people to swallow, but we must be realistic and critical in planning for the future of humanity. This book will help people get a much better perspective on life if they give it a chance. If you're not already familiar with the singularity concept or are still wearing rose-tinted glasses about how great things are going in the world, prepare to be shocked.

The real world is scary place, with many severe problems and massive changes in store for us. Read the book if you are prepared to grow up and face it.

Endangered Dreams: The Great Depression in California (Americans and the California Dream), by Kevin Starr

California, Wallace Stegner observed, is like the rest of the United States, only more so. Indeed, the Golden State has always seemed to be a place where the hopes and fears of the American dream have been played out in a bigger and bolder way. And no one has done more to capture this epic story than Kevin Starr, in his acclaimed series of gripping social and cultural histories. Now Starr carries his account into the 1930s, when the political extremes that threatened so much of the Depression-ravaged world--fascism and communism--loomed large across the California landscape.
In Endangered Dreams, Starr paints a portrait that is both detailed and panoramic, offering a vivid look at the personalities and events that shaped a decade of explosive tension. He begins with the rise of radicalism on the Pacific Coast, which erupted when the Great Depression swept over California in the 1930s. Starr captures the triumphs and tumult of the great agricultural strikes in the Imperial Valley, the San Joaquin Valley, Stockton, and Salinas, identifying the crucial role played by Communist organizers; he also shows how, after some successes, the Communists disbanded their unions on direct orders of the Comintern in 1935. The highpoint of social conflict, however, was 1934, the year of the coastwide maritime strike, and here Starr's narrative talents are at their best, as he brings to life the astonishing general strike that took control of San Francisco, where workers led by charismatic longshoreman Harry Bridges mounted the barricades to stand off National Guardsmen. That same year socialist Upton Sinclair won the Democratic nomination for governor, and he launched his dramatic End Poverty in California (EPIC) campaign. In the end, however, these challenges galvanized the Right in a corporate, legal, and vigilante counterattack that crushed both organized labor and Sinclair. And yet, the Depression also brought out the finest in Californians: state Democrats fought for a local New Deal; California natives helped care for more than a million impoverished migrants through public and private programs; artists movingly documented the impact of the Depression; and an unprecedented program of public works (capped by the Golden Gate Bridge) made the California we know today possible.
In capturing the powerful forces that swept the state during the 1930s--radicalism, repression, construction, and artistic expression--Starr weaves an insightful analysis into his narrative fabric. Out of a shattered decade of economic and social dislocation, he constructs a coherent whole and a mirror for understanding our own time.

Amazon.com Review
The Great Depression struck California hard, just as it did countless other states and nations. It also helped remake California, writes Kevin Starr in this fourth installment of his multivolume history of the state. The Depression brought a massive influx of hopeful refugees to California from elsewhere in the United States, including 300,000 new agricultural workers--the people of John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath. These newcomers worked in the fields and stores for fifteen cents an hour while Hollywood made movies about their lot, Woody Guthrie sang songs about them, and union organizers tried hard to make a labor-based revolution. The fortunes of these "Okies" is just one of the sweeping topics that Starr, a fine writer and imaginative chronicler, takes on in this book.

From Publishers Weekly
California during the Depression was a battleground where socialists, labor activists and free-speech advocates faced often violent resistance from a militant right using vigilante squads, tear gas- wielding police, suppression of civil liberties, and antiunion crackdowns. In a vibrant, engrossing chronicle (the fifth volume in his Americans and the Californian Dream series), Starr, California's State Librarian, reclaims the Depression-era Golden State as an important chapter in the American experiment. He charts the struggles of Wobblies, of striking waterfront workers and of thousands of migrant dust-bowl, Mexican and Filipino farmworkers who challenged the agribusiness oligarchy. Socialist novelist Upton Sinclair's 1934 gubernatorial bid on the Democratic ticket, buttressing his End Poverty in California (EPIC) campaign, was defeated by a combination of big money and Hollywood fund-raising. Although California, then a right-of-center Republican state, resisted Roosevelt's New Deal, its migrant camps aided the displaced poor, and an unprecedented public works program revitalized the economy, creating schools, dams, parks, urban improvement projects and the Golden Gate Bridge. From Library Journal
This fourth volume in California State Librarian Starr's "Americans and the California Dream" series (e.g., Material Dreams: Southern California Through the 1920s, Oxford Univ. Pr., 1990) takes on the Depression, which had a profound impact on California's economy, politics, society, and culture. Starr focuses on personalities such as Upton Sinclair and Harry Bridges and social developments such as migrant farm labor and "Ham and Eggs," which contributed to an already distinct California style and tradition. As he has done before, Starr includes a section on public works, which describes water development projects and the jewel in California's architectural crown, the Golden Gate Bridge. He includes a detailed bibliographic essay. The mix of sound scholarship and contemporary literary expression creates a fascinatingly readable picture of the Golden State in the 1930s. Highly recommended for all libraries with California collections.

Californians, Learn Your State's History
By A Customer
Kevin Starr's continuing work on the history of California since 1850 continues to impress me and fill me with interesting and useful knowledge about the state. Being a resident of the state, it is relatively easy for me to keep following the thread and the meaning of names and locations. I can imagine this would be somewhat more difficult for readers not as familiar with our state. The story of the waterfront strikes in San Francisco and the farming/migrant/labor issues of the 1930s are very compelling and should be easily understood by readers regardless of where they are from. The issues dealing with our water supply and other water management issues as well as those dealing with large public works within the state, can pose a bigger challenge for those readers.
As with his other volumes, Mr. Starr doesn't just give us straight-ahead, factual history. In my view, he is especially good at giving incidental stories about some of the players involved in a way that keeps the reader more interested. Immediately after finishing the book I went to the internet to find out more about people like photographer Dorothea Lange and the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. That is what I ask of books like these: that they teach me about things I don't know much about and that they cause me to follow up and learn more about some of the topics within the book.
One learns reading this particular volume that the current quirkiness of California (governor recalls, liberalism, social diversity) is not something that just developed in the 1970s. We had recall movements back in the 1930s as well and some ugliness comes through regarding racism and discrimination in this state that sometimes thinks so highly of itself in that area. It is truly shameful how we discriminated against all migrant workers, whether of color or the Oakies that came to us from the Dust Bowl. The stories of abuse of power by the police and other government entities were very interesting.
I would love to have every Californian---especially our politicians---read Mr. Starr's work. Most history is slow to read, and this is no exception, but the amounts of knowledge one will get about California, make it worth the while.

A terrific summary of California's Labor history
By larry@hotmail.com
This fourth chapter in Starr's "Americans and the California Dream" is the best yet. I was paticularly interested, in what Starr sees as the States battle between the forces of communism and fascism. The text reads like an account of a some great war, following each battle and skirmish throughout the State. I would recommend this work to anyone who is seriously interested in California or Labor history.

It is a really good story. In this book you're searching for clues. Once you start into the book it gets more interesting.
This story tells about five people who solve a mystery. This group of people is called the Woodlanders. The mystery is finding out why Mr. and Mrs. Bell hid their son for thirty years in the Old Bell House. The most interesting part was when the Woodlanders found the trap door to the third floor where the son lived.
I would recommend this story for anyone who likes mystery stories. This book is probably the best story I have ever read.
