Addicting!

I find this series to be highly addicting. I flew through the Amber Project and was blown away. I couldn't wait to get my hands on Transient Echoes. Once again I was not disappointed. I found that this series will stick with me for awhile. The characters are well developed and the story line flows effortlessly. The ending of book one left me with a little bit of a cliffhanger and tons of questions. Those questions are answered and more questions are formed.

This book picks up four years later and much has changed. My favorite character in this book is John. He makes me laugh the most and I just love his loyalty and bravery. He is such a great character. My favorite John moments are when he is talking to his commander. It shows his humor and who he is at the same time.

At this point I usually talk about my favorite part of the book. I literally can't do that because even trying to describe it gives away too many spoilers. The only words I'm going to say is shaved heads. I hope if you finish reading you know the moment I speaking about.

I would recommend this book to all of my sci fi and dystopian loving fans.

If you have read the previous book and enjoyed it even mildly

This book is a continuation of the story from The Amber Project, and takes place several years after the conclusion of the previous book. If you have read the previous book and enjoyed it even mildly, its almost assured you will enjoy this one. If you haven't, and are concerned about missing out on too much to get anything from Transient Echoes, I will say that everything of lasting consequence from The Amber Project is succinctly explained in the opening chapters. The structure of the plot in this book is very much self-contained so there's no reason not to simply start reading here except that in doing this you miss the gradual growth of the main character over time.

The returning characters in Transient Echoes are all older than they were in The Amber Project and with that we get more complex motivations and actions. The storytelling here is fairly nuanced for a YA book, which I feel is a good thing; many YA books tend to needlessly simplify themselves to be comprehensible to children, but that is not the case here. This book isn't Dostoevsky, but it will challenge younger readers in positive ways. Teens will find it no issue, and will appreciate the added literary meat.

Overall a worthwhile read for sci-fi fans of any age.

Brilliant! I would love to see this series on the big screen!

I began reading Transient Echoes the minute that I one-clicked! I couldn't wait to see how Terry and Mei and all of these other characters that I had come to know and love were getting along. And I really couldn't wait to have more of the story unfold, to learn more about the origins of the disaster that had befallen the Earth so long ago. I was not disappointed!
The pacing of this story is perfect. Just slow enough to keep you on the edge of your seat as the layers are peeled back one by one, eventually exposing the truth behind the Jolt, the catastrophic event that had drastically altered the Earth's atmosphere and brought mankind to the brink of extinction.
Like any great mystery, the clues are exposed gradually giving the reader time to try to puzzle it out on their own.
We now find Terry alone on a strange new world with only the voices in his head to keep him company. Transported through the rift in space as he shut down the machine that had all but destroyed the human race, he struggles to survive as he believes himself to be responsible for the death of the friends that he'd left behind.
Meanwhile Mei is back home on Earth, a PHD now in charge of her own scientific team. Under the guise of discovering the source of the radiation still emanating from the facility that had housed the machine and of exploring the potential development of a new energy source, she secretly works to learn the truth about what really happened to her friend Terry on that fateful expedition three years before.
As they each struggle to survive in their dangerous surroundings, the truth slowly unfolds, but not all of the answers are to be found on Earth...
I hated getting to the end of this story as I knew that I had to wait for the next installment to be released. And now I've been sitting on Hope Everlasting for a while, waiting for all of the holiday chaos to be over so that I could totally immerse myself in this wonderful story that Mr. Chaney has created. I can't wait to see if things are going to work out the way that I think that they are or if the author has some surprises for me!
The Variant Saga is a brilliantly written, exciting story that I think would translate very well to film. Much like the Divergent Saga, Maze Runner or The Hunger Games I would love to see this series up on the big screen someday! Highly recommended!

Erudite and Dense, but Worth the Read

Ruth Barcan's latest book, Nudity: A Cultural Anatomy, isn't your average beach read. It's printed in small type and has only a few pictures (i.e. Figure 1, etc.). Barcan, who teaches in the Dept. of Gender Studies at the University of Sydney, Australia, is an academician and her writing style reflects it.

I must admit that I found a good deal of the writing dense and requiring my full attention to decipher. Occasionally, it drove me to the old Random House Unabridged. [The meaning of metonym fascinated me (root word: metonymy - look it up!).]

Ms. Barcan breaks Nudity: A Cultural Anatomy down into four main sections: 1) The Nudity/Clothing Dialectic 2) The Metaphor of Nudity 3) Unnatural nature: Mess, Savagery, Perversion, Crime 4) The Nude Republic: Celebrity, "Ordinariness" and Identity." These four topics very thoroughly cover nudity within cultures--in a religious, social, mythical, and economic sense. Nudism is covered on pages 166-180.

Nudity: A Cultural Anatomy, in my humble opinion, offers little in the way of new insights into its subject. Having recently read Body Packaging, I felt I learned as much, or more, from that book as I did from this one. However, that's not to say that Ms. Barcan has nothing to teach. If you can focus on deciphering some of the academic prose, your reward will be some interesting cultural nuggets.

I'll end this review in Ms. Barcan's own words. "Whatever choices or determinations we as individuals might make, it is clear that our culture provides us with a vast array of possible responses to nudity, ranging from disapprobation to romanticization. The rich philosophical, religious and artistic traditions of the West help structure our reactions to nudity and our bodily experiences of it. While in any given instance we as individuals might make a clear-cut judgment, our society as a whole is characterized by ambivalence towards nudity. This ambivalence is related to a host of others--ambivalence about the body itself, about sex, about the benefits of modern civilization and, deep down, about what it means to be a human, and about the place of humans in nature."

Nakedness Taken Seriously, Finally

This book must surely be the best of its kind on the subject. It is a highly readable yet erudite examination of the historical, psycho-social, and symbolic meanings attached to the unclothed human body in Western societies. Barcan (herself a nudist) draws upon philosophy, religion, literature, popular culture and personal interviews to analyze the nudity/clothing dialectic, the metaphorical uses of nakedness, the makeup of anti-nude attitudes, and the influence of embodiment on one's sense of self and community. In addition to consulting other nudists in preparation for her writing, Barcan discussed matters with nude models, tattooists, health professionals, strippers, pornographers, and educators. Thus, the book is both well-grounded theoretically and "fleshed out" by the lived-experience of individuals for whom nudity is experientially significant. Barcan teaches in the Humanities Dept. of the University of Western Sydney (Australia).

Good purchase!!

The image here is not accurate to what I received in the mail which was to be expected. The image provided here on Amazon is the cover of the first volume of the manga, not the light novels. I knew what the cover of the light novel looked like and I got what I had expected to get. Simple issue with photos on Amazon not showing the correct product.

It was in good condition when I received it and I recieved it relatively quickly. I didn't need it by a specific date as a gift so I wasn't worried about it taking a week or two.

I own the rest of the translated light novels so this was a good add on to my collection.

Fun fact: The book was written before the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist anime was shown. Thus, the characters Russell and Fletcher Tringham can be found in the 2003 anime, making their first appearance in the 11th and 12th episode. The plot of the episodes follows the book pretty well and the two characters do go on to play a bigger role later in the 2003 anime.

This book was for my 12 year old daughter... she is a HUGE fan of Fullmetal Alchemist, and has all of the manga comics of the series. This book was a good addition to her collection. She loved it so much that she now is asking for the next book on this series... gotta' find it!!

You've got to like the series to stand reading this book

Alright, this book isn't exactly going to end up on any best sellers lists. As a writer I had to really stop myself from pulling out my red pen and giving it a thorough going over. Basically, it wasn't very well written and read like a synopsis of one of the anime episodes. This could have to do with the fact that it's a translation. Having read translations of other books from French and Spanish I know that they never read as well in English as they do in the original language. Of course, I don't read Japanese so I can't really vouche for the original.

On the other hand, it was enjoyable just becuase I'm a big fan of the anime and manga series. I felt rather silly reading it, since it felt juvenile to me. But I read it and... liked it, I guess. Well, it wasn't that bad. If you're a fanatic and not an English major, read the book.

About the Author
Scott Turow is the author of worldwide bestselling novels including "Presumed Innocent", I"nnocent", "Ordinary Heroes", " The Burden of Proof", "Reversible Errors" and "Limitations". His works of nonfiction include "One L", his journal from his first year at law school, and "Ultimate Punishment", which he wrote after serving on the Illinois commission that investigated the administration of the death penalty and influenced Governor George Ryan s unprecedented commutation of the sentences of 164 death row inmates on his last day in office. "Ultimate Punishment" won the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award. He lives outside Chicago, where he is partner in the firm of SNR Denton (formerly Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal).

Still the best account of law school.

Even though this memoir was first published almost 25 years ago, it is still the best depiction of what law school is *really* like. When I went to Harvard Law School (starting in 1995, exactly 20 years after Turow), everyone told me "It's not like One-L anymore." That's only half true -- One-L is overly dramatic, but the basic events and emotions he depicts rang true again and again. Of course, as the other reviews show, some law students are able to blow off the intensity, others (like Turow) become consumed by it, and the rest (like me) swing back and forth between panic and enjoyment. All in all, this is an excellent peek at the law school experience. Just don't use this as your only basis for deciding whether to go to law school and/or to Harvard.

Great and insightful read.

Great book! I found myself sitting in Scott Turow's shoes feeling the emotional, and often literal, ebbs and flows he experienced during his first year at Harvard Law School. This book reads like a fiction novel but the fact that it is non-fiction makes it an even better read and has helped me mentally prepare for the infamous "One L". I'm glad I bought this book and recommend it to any potential law student wanting to get an idea of what One L is like.
