Pattern Languages of Program Design 3 (v. 3), by Robert C. Martin, Dirk Riehle, Frank Buschmann

The third in a series of books documenting patterns for professional software developers, this volume continues the tradition of informational excellence established by the first two volumes. Pattern Languages of Program Design 3 differs from the previous two volumes in that it includes international submissions, gathering the best papers from both PloP 96 and EuroPLoP 96. It covers a wide range of pattern-related subjects, and patterns are arranged by topic so software engineers can easily select those of greatest relevance to their needs and application domains. This book goes beyond teaching software engineers that design patterns are powerful tools to impart understanding--it shows where and when patterns are best applied.

Amazon.com Review
The third book in a series, Pattern Languages of Program Design 3 discusses how to catalog software patterns, which are reusable, higher-order designs. This volume presents over two dozen white papers on newly "discovered" patterns within a wide variety of contexts. The editors have grouped these patterns by topic so you can choose what interests you. Each pattern profile features a short introduction to show you what each pattern might be good for.

"General purpose" design patterns include the Null Object, the Manager, and the Product Trader patterns, and another section improves on the Visitor pattern. These patterns allow classes to borrow the methods of other classes without using inheritance. Some of the most challenging patterns in this book are good for distributed processing, including Acceptor and Connector and Object Recovery. Basic research in object-oriented design (OOD) is apparent in the Serializer pattern, which implements persistence for objects, another unusually difficult aspect of object design to get right. Another useful section introduces "domain specific" patterns--or patterns that solve particular real-world problems--with several patterns for transportation systems and fire alarms.

The book closes with more esoteric explorations of patterns for developers, including patterns for effectively designing in teams and using software testing patterns. Judging from the rich selection of the ordinary and the bizarre, there seems to be no end in sight for the business of discovering patterns. For those interested in expanding their collection of patterns, this volume offers a fascinating array of new specimens.

Review
Read the entire review of this book.

A software design pattern is a solution to a particular computing problem. Each pattern has, in general, four parts: the pattern name, the problem to be solved, the solution provided by the pattern, and the trade-offs. Familiarity with patterns makes software design "easier," because large concepts can be dealt with using the patterns, rather than reinventing the wheel in each program.

A recent presentation on patterns comes via Addison-Wesley's Corporate & Professional imprint. The production quality of Pattern Languages Of Program Design 3, edited by Robert Martin, Dirk Riehle, and Frank Buschmann, is excellent, and the binding easily endured the two months I spent reviewing the text. Most importantly, because you'll find yourself reading the text with pen in hand, the pages are of sufficient thickness to take marginalia and highlighting without bleed-through. This is a nice book...

PLoPD3 is no novel. It is a difficult book to read, for you are reading the documentation and code of other programs. It is not a book to skim once and shelve. Rather, I suggest you read a paper, try to imagine how you would use the pattern, and try some of the sample code. Try to imagine some of the problems that will occur if you use the pattern. With this admittedly conservative approach, the book will take a few months to read. --Peter N. Roth, Dr. Dobb's Journal -- Dr. Dobb's Journal

From the Inside Flap

This is the third in the series of PLoPD books; and it represents something of a departure from the previous two. This is the first book in the PLoPD series in which fewer than half of the papers submitted at the corresponding PLoP conferences have been published. This is also the first PLoPD book in which papers from more than one conference have been published. There were over 80 papers submitted to PLoP '96 and EuroPLoP '96 and there was no way that we could publish them all. Therefore we had the unhappy task of deciding which of those papers not to publish. This task was not easy since all the papers submitted were of very high quality (Something we have come to expect from the PLoP conferences). Fortunately, our burden was lightened by all the folks who helped out with the review and selection process.

The process of creating this book.

We recruited a veritable army of reviewers, and each of the 80+ papers was reviewed by three of them. The reviewers' recommendations were then passed on to the three editors (Dirk Riehle, Frank Buschmann, and Robert Martin). Then began a rather long and heated exchange between us. None of us had any problem being choosy; and, indeed, the three of us settled on a large core of papers to be published. But there were a few papers that we did not agree upon. And thereupon laid the long and arduous process of defining the final contents of this book. None of us think that this book is perfect; but all of us think that it is a top-notch collection of superb papers.

What were our selection criteria? The choice of papers was constrained by our target audience: software engineers. First and foremost the papers in this volume had to be of interest to this audience. Although patterns about music are interesting to musicians, we did not think that they should be included here. Secondly, the papers had to be of practical value to our audience. Although papers of abstract theory are certainly interesting, we gave preference to papers that provided techniques or tools that would be of immediate use to our audience. Finally, the papers should be patterns. There were lots of good papers that were written about software engineering, but we gave preference to those that described patterns related to software engineering.

To be sure, these criteria were not unambiguously stated up front. Like all high quality projects, the requirements evolved during development. It was during the book definition process that we learned about each other's expectations and visions for the book. And it was during this process that our own expectations and visions were changed through discussion and argument. All in all, it was a very rewarding, if somewhat exhausting, experience.

In the spirit of Ralph Johnson's suggestion to catalog patterns as design specimens, just like biology catalogs and classifies its animal and non-animal specimens, we organized the book by topic. It comprises general design patterns as well as patterns for specific technical or business domains. It also contains patterns for designing user interfaces, and helping with software processes; it even contains a chapter with patterns for writing patterns. We did not distinguish between patterns and pattern languages, but focussed on putting together patterns by topic so that you can take a look and see whether these patterns are of interest to your needs and your application domains.

Design Patterns, a 1997 perspective.

It has been two years since the publication of the GoF book. During that time interest in design patterns has increased at a phenomenal rate. Today it is very unlikely that any serious software is ignorant of the concept of design patterns. There are major magazines that run regular columns about design patterns. The C++ Report runs a monthly section about design patterns. There are several other books by major authors that have been published on the topic of design patterns. All this indicates that the concept of design patterns is a significant event in the evolution of software engineering; and that it will continue to grow in significance for several years to come.

With this growth in awareness and significance comes a danger. It would be easy to switch our enthusiasm from the patterns themselves to the concept of patterns in general. This, in our opinion, would be a mistake. The use of well-worn design patterns in a given project can be of great benefit. But the force fit of lots of different patterns into the same project would be worse than useless. Just because a pattern exists, does not mean the pattern should be used. A particular pattern fits into a project when there is a problem to be solved, and when that pattern properly balances the forces that impinge upon that problem. One cannot justify the use of a particular pattern just because it is a pattern. For example, an engineer can not justify the use of the Visitor pattern simply because it is a pattern in the GoF book. Design patterns are tools to be used by engineers who understand where and when those tools are best applied.

Where are your weapons?

Dr. Who is an old English science fiction television series. In the episode entitled "Hand of Destiny" a silicon based life-form is escorted into the Tardis (Dr. Who's space ship. An acronym which stands for: Time And Relative Dimensions In Space) by the Doctor. The life form looks around and exclaims: "Impressive! But where are its weapons?" The Doctor stares the silicon based life form right in the eyes, points at his temple, and says: "Here!"

Once one of us (Robert) spoke at a conference in Chicago to a rather large audience regarding design patterns. He asked all of them who had purchased the GoF book to raise their hands. About 80% of the hands went up. Then he asked everyone who had not read what they had bought to put their hands down. About half the hands went down. Then he asked everyone who could not explain the Visitor pattern to put their hands down. Nearly all the hands went down.

The patterns in this book, or in any of the excellent patterns books that have been published since 1995, do you no good if they remain in the book. They have to get into your head for them to be of real use. Some folks like to think that they can use the various patterns books as a catalog in which to look up solutions when they have problems; but this is not likely to be an effective practice. Instead, you must study the patterns and integrate them into your mental model of software design. Then, when you are designing software, the patterns will present themselves before you even know you have a design problem.

So read the patterns. Read them carefully. Make sure your weapons for attacking software design are firmly ensconced within your brain.

Acknowledgements

First of all, a very special thanks to the Hillside group for sponsoring the PLoP conferences, and for providing the motive force for these books. Without their effort and dedication there might not be any PLoPD books at all.

Thanks to Doug Schmidt whose sanity is contagious.

Thanks to Jim Coplien (cope) who reminded us that our work has a moral, as well as technological, imperative.

Thanks to John Vlissides, the series editor, for keeping his hand on the tiller while the storm raged.

Thanks to Walter Tichy for keeping us humble.

Finally, from Bob a personal thanks to Dirk Riehle and Frank Buschmann for keeping him from bouncing too far off the wall.

We would also like to thank all the authors who submitted papers to PLoP and EuroPLoP '96, the shepherds who helped guide those papers to the conference, and the reviewers who helped the editors make the hard choices. Their names follow:

Enjoyable book for the friends of software patterns
By ws__
This book has quite some prerequisites for its potential readers. You should have a working knowledge of the patterns of the too basic books ("Design Patterns" by Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, John Vlissides and "Pattern-Oriented Software Architecture" by Frank Buschmann, Regine Meunier, Hans Rohnert, Peter Sommerlad, Michael Stal). It is helpful to have the too previous conference books as a reference nearby. Yes and you have to cope with C++ (when did you use it last time) and Smalltalk.

If you are happy with this, you get rewarded by a rich set of ideas and insights. The book just draws you in. This is a conference book by many authors. But due to their shepherd and writers workshop efforts the book nearly reads like being written by one author/author team. The level is excellent. Reading this book is a nice way to spend your time.

A Lot of good stuff
By Christophe Addinquy
When looking at the PLOPD serie, it become obvious that material become more and more mature. We'll find in this book good design patterns we can directly apply in our everyday work. Yo will probably found that all patterns are not usefull, but only a subset, but it's however an enough reason to buy this book.

Very good book, nice collection of Jewish music
By Igal Balaban
Very good book, nice collection of Jewish music, definitely good for song references, for lyrics and also just for fun - remembering some songs, maybe learning a new one. I like it very much. Maybe missing some newer ones, but one can't always be up to date.

NOT for the Piano
By Aly
I'm just learning piano and ordered this book to play the piano, but it doesn't have the bass notes, only the treble. I have to say I was very disappointed when it arrived as I can't use it. However, it does have guitar notes so hopefully, my daughter can use it.
Hope this helps.

Toni Morrison: Conversations (Literary Conversations Series)From University Press of Mississippi

As a chronicler of the African American experience in fiction and as an incisive cultural commentator in her essays and lectures, Toni Morrison (b. 1931) is regarded as one of the nation's most distinguished novelists and intellectuals. Her novels are richly layered narratives that explore the meanings of tragedy and myth in individual lives. Morrison's perspectives on American life and culture, rendered with a deep understanding of the consequences of history and the power of art, are always compelling.

Toni Morrison: Conversations includes interviews with the Nobel Laureate that bring into the foreground Morrison's comments on American literature and society, the academy, and her own work. She discusses growing up in Lorain, Ohio, her role as editor at Random House, the continuing evolution of her style, her teaching philosophy, and her most recent novels Jazz, Paradise, and Love. This volume includes interviews and profiles from the 1970s and 1980s that were not collected in Conversations with Toni Morrison (1993) and a rich collection of new interviews published together for the first time, including conversations with Paula Giddings, Salman Rushdie, Charlie Rose, and Elissa Schappell.

Carolyn C. Denard is the author of scholarly essays on Toni Morrison and the forthcoming Cambridge Introduction to Toni Morrison. She is Associate Dean of the College at Brown University and founder of the Toni Morrison Society.

Amazon.com Review
Q&A with Brandon Sanderson (Interviewed by James Dashner)

Q. Brandon, you’re perhaps best known for your adult books—Mistborn, The Way of Kings, and particularly for finishing Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series. However, recently you’ve undertaken several projects for younger readers. Why is that? How does it feel to be entering into the world of YA fiction? How does it differ from writing for an adult audience? How do you possibly think you can compete with your friend, James Dashner?

A. I've known this guy James Dashner for so long, and he was such an inspiration to me, and I thought, if this joker can do it, then I can too! The sci-fi/fantasy genre is what made a reader out of me, and it has a long history of crossing the line between YA and adult fiction. For example, you mentioned The Wheel of Time. In the early books, the main protagonists are all teenagers. Are these books YA? The publishers don't classify them that way. They’re shelved with the adult fantasy books. Books like that have influenced me in that some of the stories I tell fit into the mold that society says will package well as YA books. Other stories I tell—that are a thousand pages long—don’t seem to fit that mold. But I don’t sit down and say, “I’m writing for a teen audience now. I need to change my entire style.” Instead, I say, “This project and the way I’m writing it feels like it would work well for a teen audience.”

Q. In previous interviews, you’ve mentioned that you come up with characters, worlds, and magic systems independently and then fit them together to create a book. How is that different when writing a YA book like Steelheart? Are certain worlds or magic systems more suitable for YA readers? And how in the world did you get so smart?

A. Ha! I do a lot of talking about the process of writing. That makes it sound like I’m doing it more consciously than I am, but at this point I do most of it by instinct. I do take things like characters, settings, and magic systems—all these little fragments and pieces—and put them together into stories. Whether I’m writing YA or adult, this process doesn’t vary. Some of these elements feel better suited for a teen audience, so when everything starts coming together as it does when a book is forming for me, some stories naturally gravitate toward YA. To me Steelheart is distinctive because it was one of those stories where all the elements came together at the same time. Once I got the idea—people gaining super powers but only evil people getting them—the story basically started to write itself in my head. It happened during a four-hour drive along the East Coast, where by the end of it, I basically had this entire story. I knew where it was going, and I was really excited to write it. That's rare for me, but sometimes it does happen where everything clicks right at the beginning.

Q. Can you give us a sense of the world in which Steelheart takes place? Why do you think this world worked well for these particular characters?

A. Technically, Steelheart is set in a post-apocalyptic world where super villains gained powers and took over. I wanted it to feel alien and familiar at the same time and to be very visual. So I wrote it to be kind of like an action movie in book form. One of my catchphrases that I use when talking about writing is ”Err on the side of awesomeness.” So I wanted the setting and feel of the book to be visually distinctive and awesome.

When I designed Steelheart, the emperor of Chicago, I wanted him to have the power of transmutation—he turns things into steel. The idea that, in a burst of power, he turned the entire city—and even part of the lake—into steel was fascinating to me. This renders a lot of things useless. When your streetlights and all their wiring have been turned into steel, everything short circuits and doesn’t work anymore. You can’t get into buildings because their doors and windows have been melded together. The whole city has become a shell—like the husk of a dead beetle—and people have built on top of it. It’s always perpetual twilight there, so we’ve got this cool feel of everything being steel at night.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—After the appearance of Calamity, a mysterious celestial force, ordinary humans began to exhibit superhuman powers. They became known as Epics and used their powers to control others. When David was eight years old, he witnessed his father's ruthless murder at the hand of Steelheart, one of the most powerful Epics in the world. Ten years later, David lives in Newcago (once Chicago) under the tyrannical rule of Steelheart and his inner circle of Epics. David has spent the last decade researching everything he can about Epics: their habits, their powers, and their weaknesses. He wants to join the Reckoners, a secretive group of humans dedicated to killing Epics, and convince them to take on Steelheart. However, even after all his study, David has not figured out the seemingly invincible Epic's weakness-without that knowledge, his plan for revenge cannot succeed. MacLeod Andrews's understated performance of the first-person narration is highly effective and makes the engaging action scenes stand out in contrast. He transitions easily among characters who vary in age, background, and status within the world of humans and Epics. Revelations in the climactic battle add layers and substance to the story, and listeners will look forward to more in future installments.—Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, IL

From Booklist
*Starred Review* From the day eight-year-old David Charleston watched Steelheart gun down his father, he has vowed revenge. All Epics are powerful—Steelheart the most invincible of all—but each has a weakness, and David thinks he has found Steelheart’s: he has seen him bleed. Now 10 years later, with this experience and years of studying each Epic’s patterns and weaknesses, David worms his way into the Reckoners, a courageous group determined to take down Epics in an attempt to return the Fractured States to some semblance of normalcy. Sanderson has written a riveting dystopian adventure novel replete with awesome tech tools: pen detonators, gauss guns, gravitronic motorcycles, mobiles (smart phones on steroids), and tensor gloves to tunnel through steel. Each Reckoner has his or her own talents: Tia, research and planning; Cody, intelligent grunt work and comic relief; Abraham, weapons and ammunition; and Prof, leader and prime inventor-scientist. Oh, and there’s Megan, new girl with an attitude—especially when it comes to David’s relentless pressure on the Reckoners to stay in Newcago and kill Steelheart. Snappy dialogue, bizarre plot twists, high-intensity action, and a touch of mystery and romance—it’s a formula that sucks readers into the prologue, slings them through one tension-filled encounter after another, and then, at the strange and marginally hopeful conclusion, leaves them panting for the sequel, Firefight, due in 2014. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: A multiplatform marketing campaign, with promotions happening every month in 2013 leading up to the pub date, has already kicked into high gear for New York Times best-selling Sanderson’s latest. Grades 8-12. --Frances Bradburn

Steelheart is a fast-paced, action-filled, blast of a book
By Storm the Penguin
Steelheart will be my second Sanderson book based in his younger teen fiction category, The Rithmatist being my first. Whereas I felt that The Rithmatist was a bit too corny and "cutesy," I think Steelheart will be a great "gateway" book for younger fans to discover Sanderson's other, more mature, fiction series.

Steelheart is set in a world shaped by "The Calamity," a meteor in the sky which has granted comic-book superhero-style powers to random humans, now called Epics. One of the defining themes in the book being that absolute power corrupts absolutely, there are no superheroes. No X-Men, Spidermans, or Supermans. Normal humans in this world are regarded as little more than slaves. The book follows the main character David, in his quest for revenge against the ruthless, cold-hearted, ruler of Newcago (formerly Chicago) - Steelheart.

While the plot and character development are pretty basic, and while David does suffer a little bit from "The Chosen One" Syndrome, the story is well-paced and makes for a very engaging read. This will probably be one of those books that you end up reading until it's way past bedtime. Fans of Sanderson will immediately recognize some of his quirks - protagonists tending to use their brains rather than brawn, numerous plot-twists, and of course, gratuitous magic system explanations. Steelheart is no exception to this formula.

For the teens - Steelheart is basically a comic book in written form. There's fights, superpowers, puppy-love crushes, and explosions. In fact I could almost hear a Hans Zimmer soundtrack in my head during several of the battles. Sanderson paints a vivid picture through his storytelling, and it won't take much imagination to see the entire book unfurling before you like a movie.

For the parents - Steelheart is a bit on the violent side but is clean on both language and romance. There's quite a few relatively graphic descriptions of firefights and injuries and incidental body count is pretty high. There's a big leap nowadays between Rated PG-13 and R, and I think Steelheart is probably right in between those two. It's not as bad as something you'll see on HBO/Showtime, but it's not nickelodeon-clean either. Something like primetime cable network violence.

For the adult Sanderson fans - the corny language will probably be the first thing that sticks out to you; the second thing will be the bluntness. It's always amusing to read something like Steelheart after re-reading The Way of Kings - same author but completely different voices. If you're already a fan of Sanderson, Steelheart will be very familiar ground and you won't feel out of place at all. With the exception of the depth of character and plot. There's not a whole lot of subtext comparatively to his adult works, but honestly I found that a bit refreshing. It's like having to play politics at the office versus hanging out with friends.

Steelheart was a great read and is a stand out in the crowded teen fiction market. For the adult Sanderson fans, I still consider this book a "buy". Honestly it reminded me quite a bit of his Mistborn Trilogy (and everything that entails). I inhaled this book in two days, and if it wasn't for that pesky need for sleep, I probably would have done it in a single sitting. It's honestly just a fun, action-packed, page-turner of a book.

Good overall, but some major flaws for me.
By ZzAzZ
I'm going to seperate this into the good and the bad to make it easier to gather my thoughts on the book. It really had some major ups and downs. Some minor spoilers may be ahead.

Let's start with the bad:

1. This book really beat you over the head with some of the characters, the humor, and the love story. For instance, the character of Cody and his relentless made up storytelling that no one bought, and everyone got tired of. Every chance he got, there was another story he was telling that was exaggerated or just complete nonsense.

2. The humor. How many times do I have to hear about how bad the David (the main character) is at coming up with metaphors. It's really like every 5 minutes he goes into another one, only to explain, yet again, how bad he is at them. Maybe it would have been funny if you weren't beat over the head with it over and over. Same goes for Cody and his outlandish stories, we get it.

3. The love story. It really felt as if it was told through the perspective of a 12 year old. And was another thing that was beat over your head over and over. David finds Megan extremely beautiful, we got it, I don't need to be reminded every time they were involved in the same scene.

4. A lot of the book revolved around the mystery of what Steelheart's weakness was. Now obviously not everyone is going to have this problem, but I felt like I knew pretty early on, and it was a bit frustrating knowing I'd have to get to the end to find out, and I was right, which added to the frustration.

The good:

1. All of that said, the plot, the epics, the city and the structure of the society were all very cool and well done. The name Newcago wasn't very creative to me, but just a minor detail.

2. The idea of the Reckoners, the tools they use, and then the twists and turns as the story goes along, especially at the end, really redeemed the story for me. Prof and Abraham were very cool characters in my opinion. I loved the surprises, and the ending solution, as said on the cover, really was pretty awesome and did not see that coming.

3. It was full of action and suspense, there wasn't really a lot of dull down time or any parts where it really felt like it was moving slow for me.

Overall, if you can get past the very cheesy, beating-a-dead-horse to make absolutely sure you're getting the humor YA aspects of the book, it's well worth a read. Despite the negatives, I will be waiting for the next book in the series and have already read the interlude short story Mitosis which was pretty good as well.

Good new series, not his best work.
By Roman
Brandon Sanderson is an very fast writer that consistently produces good book after good book. I've been a fan of him since Elantris and I always rush out to buy whatever new book he has. His work, although formulaic, is enjoyable to read and always feels high in quality.

Steelheart is set in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic Chicago. The denizens of the book call this new Chicago 'Newcago' (yeah I wondered about that as well). The story follows David, a young man entranced with the world's new Epics. Epics are superhumans that used to be mortals until a meteor named Calamity appeared in the sky. David is obsessed with bringing vengeance on one particular epic, Steelheart.

Now that we have the basic plot down we can go into a bit of review. I won't try to spoil anything but be warned that most reviews will have a bit of spoilers in them. Steelheart is a book with excellent pacing in the drama and action departments, but I can't help but feel it was a bit too formulaic. Its almost as if Brandon was writing this as a school project rather than trying to publish it. The main character is again a bit of a know-it-all who falls for a cute girl. There is an older, mysterious character that always saves the day. There is a mysterious magic source that no one really understands. This is all textbook Sanderson, and if you've read his previous books you will feel right at home here.

Besides the obvious use of a worn formula I found this book enjoyable. The action scenes were consistent and well-paced. His New Chicago felt like an actual city and most of his characters exhibited varying personalities. The main characters were (mostly) given detailed back stories that were entertaining to read about and sometimes crucial to the plot.

Overall if you're a fan of Sanderson you will most likely read this book in an afternoon. However, if you never heard of the guy's works I would recommend picking up one of his other excellent series, such as Mistborn or Way of Kings, before jumping into this one.

Lost Stars is the Star Wars Book We Should All Be Talking About
By Sam
In a lot of ways, Lost Stars is perhaps the perfect Star Wars book. If nothing else it's easily my favorite book in the new Star Wars canon and perhaps my favorite Star Wars book in general. As someone who grew up on the old extended universe, that's saying a lot. But I mean every word of what I've said. Lost Stars is everything I ever wanted from a Star Wars book.

The author does a fantastic job of inventing her own story while fitting it seamlessly into the Star Wars narrative. She creates two interesting characters from a new, unique planet and culture. And then she takes us through their lives from the first time they meet at eight years old until the period shortly after Return of the Jedi when they are well into their twenties. They provide a refreshingly unique perspective on Star Wars, giving us insight on what it was like to be apart of the Empire when Alderaan was destroyed and how difficult it can be to balance duty with what is right. We meet new characters and old favorites in scenes that have real substance rather than coming off as merely fan service. We see the relationship between Thane Kyrell and Ciena Ree grow and evolve over years and insurmountable odds. It's Star Wars but it's more than that. It's a qhole new story that goes deeper than we have seen before on screen.

I really love this book. I know that there are people out there who hesitate to read it because it's been shoe-horned into the YA genre and because it's got a heavy emphasis on Thane and Ciena's relationship. But that really shouldn't stop people from picking this book and reading it. Everyone's talking about Aftermath by Chuck Wendig but, really, this is the book we should be talking about. This is the book that deserves credit for starting the post-ROTJ canon off strong.

For a far broader audience than they're aiming for...
By Adam Selzer
In short: this is the best Star Wars book I've read in ages. Marketed as YA (though the characters are adults for most of it), it should appeal to a far broader audience. It was more about what went on Jakku than the other books released on "Force Friday," as well.

Longer: When Star Wars was released in 1977, part of its appeal was that you knew who to cheer for and who to boo. After years of movies dominated by ambiguity and flawed heroes, this update of a silent melodrama seemed positively refreshing. But nothing's ever that black and white - there were (assuming for a moment that these characters were "real") human stories behind every TIE fighter that blew up. Not all of the billions of Imperials who didn't manage to jump ship and join the rebels were evil. Some were caught up in something that they misunderstood, that give them no choice, that lied to them.

LOST STARS begins with two characters drawn to the new Empire and all of its promises as children. The "Romeo and Juliet" comparisons people toss around are overstating things; their familiars aren't wild about their friendship, but it's a very minor issue in the overall book. As one quickly becomes cynical to the Empire and one tries to stay loyal, the two journey through the Star War trilogy (and a year or two beyond) on the fringes in sort of the same way that Forrest Gump journeyed through 20th century American history (or perhaps the way Phineas and Ferb journeyed through the periphery of " New Hope.)" But the references to stray lines and events in the original films never feel forced - the characters' stories are brilliantly and organically woven into the saga. You understand the different choices they make, the risks they take, and what's going on in their head even when you disagree with them. The romance between them (which lurks in the background most of the time) feels far more realistic than most of the romance in Star Wars books. Without delving into spoilers, by the end of the book their relationship seems well-worn and lived in that's sort of rare in fiction (it's a common joke in the YA world that the last line of every book should be "and then they probably broke up six months later.") These are interesting characters with backgrounds and stories of their own, and their relationship is complicated, just like real relationships are.

And all of this, throughout the politics and the relationships and cameos from better-known characters, manages to be great fun. The 500+ pages went by quickly. Honestly, I sometimes think Star Wars just does't translate to books very well - without the visuals and the score, some of the impact is gone, and sometimes I feel like I'm just reading a lot of tech talk and sound effects. Often I just skip around and read the main plot points to see what's going on in the galaxy at this point in the timeline. That was never an issue here. I just wished there were more of it.

This book may get lost in the shuffle; it's being marketing to an audience (YA) that's narrowed considerably since the Harry Potter era, when there was more crossover with people who normally read from the adult section. But when the dust settles and we've had time to sift through all the new Star Wars material that's come with the Force Friday deluge, Lost Stars will stand up as a high point.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a YA writer myself and I do know the author. If you want to brush off my thoughts because of that, fine. And I can sympathize with those who mourn the loss of the expanded universe books from the last 25 odd years - I can remember long days of debates with my friends about what might happen in the third Zahn book when it came out. But I like season 1 of "Rebels" more than I liked pretty much any new Star Wars stuff that had come out since 1983, and Lost Stars joins my list of reasons to think the new canon will be worth it. Give it a shot and enjoy the ride. I can even entertain a hope that it could get more people to check out the YA section again and see if there's anything else good in there...

This is the book I should've been looking forward to for the last few months!
By Tobar Dobinson
Don't skip it just because it's in the young adult category, or because you were disappointed by Aftermath!

Even with focus on new "minor" characters, this feels like Star Wars, and it ties together important scenes, locations, and motivations. And it's fun!

My only "complaint" about this book is that it hasn't been marketed as strongly as Aftermath, probably because it's been relegated to the "Young Adult" category. But there's really nothing in it (and nothing that it's missing) that should keep any not-so-young adults from reading it. It's a solid, well-written story that takes the reader through the original trilogy from the point of view of new characters, and ends up at the very beginning of the "aftermath" that will eventually lead to The Force Awakens.

Thanks for the nice surprise!
