Scholarly, gem of a book

For anyone who has to go beyond a once every 10 years "unaccustomed as I am to public speaking..." moment, this book will explain a great many mysteries about what makes amazing oratory. Drawing on a couple of thousand years of examples, the patterns and methods are illustrated clearly. There is an element of theatre, but the greatest speeches share a logic and approach to their story-telling that might prove just as applicable to your monthly project update for a steering committee as rousing the troops for battle. Think 'Alain de Botton on speech-making' as a quick summary.

A Classic Handbook to Living

Lama Surya Das has masterfully written an enlightening introduction to Buddhism, which should prove to be an enduring classic on the subject for years to come. He takes the ancient teachings of Buddhist traditions and wisdom and delivers them succinctly and wholeheartedly to the Western mind.
His astounding work is a source of inspiration and awareness that serves as a "handbook for living" that should be carried with us at all times and used often on our spiritual path. Regardless of the reader's religious or spiritual affiliation, these simple golden rules could change your life.
His introduction to the classic Buddhist teachings of The Four Noble Truths and The Eight-Fold Path are the most comprehensible and understandable that I have yet read. Finally, we are presented with a rich compilation that makes absolute sense and many readers will understand, for the first time, how to integrate this ancient Tibetan wisdom into everyday life.
Often, those of us curious about Buddhist philosophy and practice, find it hard to get beyond the dogma of the many teachings. Lama Surya Das succeeds in bringing the reader the most simple and fundamental ideas and lessons of Buddhism. Throughout the book, he reminds us to be responsible for our own thoughts and actions and to find the kindness, compassion and grace that are inherent in all of us.
For those challenged by meditation, Lama Surya Das strips away all the confusion and mystery around the practice of meditation and brings to the reader a profound understanding and "how to" guide to meditation -- the importance of which must be realized and embraced.
Toward the end of the book, he further reminds us that "We are modern mystics - living in monasteries without walls. The entire planet is our heaven on earth. Instead of being overly dependent on anyone else, we must be leaders and seers." This book teaches us how to lead by example. You do not have to have an interest or belief in Buddhism to enjoy, understand and be moved by this book. It is a book to be read, read and read again.

A TRUE AND SIMPLE UNDERSTANDING OF BUDDHISM

Lama Surya Das is a Dzogchen lineage holder and founder of the Dzogchen Foundation. I found this to be one of the most complete and easily understood books written on Buddhism, which is often a complex philosophy to understood by the lay reader.
"Awakening the Buddha Within" is similar in nature to the book, "The World of Tibetan Buddhism" a series of essays based on a three-day lecture given in London, England by the Dalai Lama and translated into English. However, if you are a novice to Buddhism, I would strongly recommend you first read, "Awakening the Budda Within". This book is much easier to understand, and the author simplifies the concepts of Buddhism in everyday terms for the western world. Lama Surya Das explains The Three Jewels of Buddhism - the commitment of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha or spiritual community, the Eight-Fold Path to Enlightenment, the Four Noble Truths and the importance of meditation in our lives. If you are searching for a better understanding of Buddhism in the contemporary world, or simply a more peaceful way of life, I highly recommend purchasing the "Awakening the Buddha Within." It is spiritually uplifting, refreshing and inspirational, and definitely one you will want to use as a reference, time and time again.

Tibetan Buddhism for Beginners

Lama Surya Das does a good job of introducing the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism to the West. Many people see Buddhism as an exotic Eastern tradition without any relevance to our lives here and now. However, one need not embrace Buddhism to gain much from Buddhist concepts. This book is a little soft on certain concepts (like reincarnation). However, this book is meant for one not already deeply involved in the practice of Buddhism, so maybe it's better that way. I also highly recommend "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Little Book of Eastern Wisdom" by Taro Gold. Excellent.

About the Author

Michael J. Palmiotto, Ph.D., is a professor of Criminal Justice and undergraduate coordinator of the Criminal Justice Department at Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas. He is a former police officer in New York State, serving with the White Plains and Scarsdale Police Departments. He has experience in establishing and operating a police training facility in western Pennsylvania. He has a master’s degree from John Jay College (CUNY) and a doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Palmiotto has been a faculty member of several universities including Western Illinois University and Armstrong Atlantic State University. Dr. Palmiotto has published ten books, twelve book chapters, and numerous articles on criminal justice and law enforcement. He has published in the areas of criminal investigations, community policing, police misconduct, police globalization, and police training, to name a few topics.

newest edition wasn't proofread!

Mr. Palmiotto's newest edition of this book, which has just been released in 2004 was apparently not proofread before it was sent to the printers. There are NUMEROUS *EXTREME* spelling and punctuation errors (lone quotations which never end, important names wrong or spelled incorrectly, key terms not bold in some instances - and this is just the first chapter!) which make the book extremely difficult to read, let alone understand. With at least 3 errors per PAGE in this book, you'd be better off working with a different book altogether. Don't waste your money!

And the more of Astraia’s memories I uncover, the more I think that Umbra isn’t even close to being the worse of it. But I’m going to keep fighting, because giving up isn’t an option. Magical Fury is a dark magical girl RPG, inspired by anime series like Madoka Magica, Sailor Moon, and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Your characters start out as normal girls who discover that they are reincarnated magical girls. They awaken to their powers under fire, and it will be up to you to decide where she goes with new her life from there. The game uses a very simple variant of the Apocalypse World engine, aimed at fast and flavorful play that you can jump into on short notice or play in a more deliberate, long-term style. Battles come down to a handful of rolls, and throughout the emphasis is decidedly on the consequences of the course of action you choose. The book also includes an appendix with 17 random tables to help you along with character creation and other things that pop up during play. To play you will need some six-sided dice, character sheets, and something to write with.

This book is just a jewel of a game. Suitable for a quick one-shot or adaptable for a full blown campaign (though it will require some additiins to the rules). The book itself (was another small one by Ewn Cluney, like Schoolgirl RPG) came in perfect condition. Not a scratch on it, nor crease. It contained all of its pages, without any markings or personal writings.

As for playability, Magical Fury gives you everything you need to run an RPG in the style of Sailor Moon and Glitter Force. Yet with some changes, you could also run a game similar to Ronin Warriors. The rules are light enough for quick and easy understanding, which I love. Searching through a tome of text to find out how to do something, completely slows the pace and fun of a game. Also, the book contains plenty of random tables for general play and inspiration. If you are a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants GM like me, who likes to just pick up a game and run with it, you'll love Magical Fury!

About the Author
Muhammad Mojlum Khan was born in 1973 in Habigong, Bangladesh and was brought up and educated in England. He is a literary critic, prolific writer and a researcher in Islamic thought and history. He has published over 100 essays and articles on Islam, comparative religion, contemporary thought and current affairs, and has been a regular contributor to The Muslim News.

Not only does this book include a wide spectrum of personalities throughtout Muslim history, but each person's biography includes what was going on in his/her world. This is the best collection of Muslim biographies that I've seen. Well written, interesting information and set into time and place.

About the Author
Sally was born in Germany but grew up and was educated in South Africa. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, which came into good use in the corporate market where she quickly rose to status of Branch Manager within her field. In 1997 she made the life defining decision to follow her passion and resigned to co-write a book. This is the first book she has written without her co-author Warren Veenman who is now her husband. The two have a son and currently reside in both Australasia and South Africa.

Sally Eichhorst is truly inspiring. She writes from deep personal experience and clearly demonstrates anyone can build their resilience and thrive despite the challenges. Each chapter builds on the previous one, leading the reader through a personal reflective journey and guided self-development. well worth the read. The concepts and inspirations are timeless. I am so glad her book is available as an ebook, making it even more accessible.
