Solid Theology Peter's Style

The reason I picked Prof. Grudem's commentary instead of others is because he is known for a careful in-depth study of Scripture with the ability to explain it clearly. This is not to say that other commentaries are not as good, but since I was so edified by his systematic theology text, I thought I would study his commentary on 1 Peter as well. Petrine and Pauline epistles are similar in that they usually start with doctrines followed by applied theology. The message Peter conveys as he begins the letter with the great doctrine of salvation is what a right living should look like as a result of a right soteriology. In other words, soteriology not only has to do with the salvation of soul in the world to come, but it transforms the believers' present life and their worldviews; in their relationship with God, morality, relationships with their fellow Christians, civil authorities and at workplaces (chapters 1-2,4). The reality of salvation should also be demonstrated in marriage, love and services in the church (chapters 3-5).

A term that doesn't show up often in the NT that Peter uses twice is parepidemos (1:1 and 2:11) that Grudem does a nice analysis on (p.52-53). He doesn't like the use of "exile" as an English equivalent of the word since it conveys someone who is forcefully removed from his or her homeland, which is not what Peter means. I agree with the assessment that the right translation is either "sojourner" or "those who reside as aliens or temporary residence away from one's homeland" in a spiritual, not physical sense that the true believers' homeland is heaven. Grudem points to Phil 3:20 as reference to compare this passage with, but I argue Heb 11:13-16 is a better parallel since the context is closer to that of 1 Peter and the same word parepidemos is also used there. In fact, the parallel with the Hebrews passage that talks about Abraham and the OT saints considering themselves as pilgrims provides a more compelling argument that Peter desires his readers to have the same mindset and lifestyle as well.

The theme of suffering seems to be dominant in 1 Peter considering the context in which it was written; namely during Nero's reign of terror (p.37). Not only does Peter remind the readers that simultaneous grief and joy are normal in the Christian life (p.68), but there is a divine design in it to test and solidify the faith of God's people and that God "commends with special honor those who trusted him in hardship even though they could not see the reason for it; they trusted him simply because he was their God and they knew him to be worthy of trust. It is in times when the reason for hardship cannot be seen that trust in God alone seems to be most pure and precious in his sight" (p.70). As a further encouragement, Peter gives an eminent example of Jesus that continues in "perfect obedience to God in the face of the most difficult opposition and hardship" (2:21-25, p. 137). Perhaps it is useful to quote Heb 12:3 when discussing these verses due to a close parallel to what the writer has in mind as well.

The best section of the commentary when it comes to a brilliant exegesis is when Grudem deals with the difficult passage in chapter 3:19-20 since I have had a hard time understanding it. The questions that naturally come out are (1) who are the spirits in prison? (2)what did Christ preach? and (3)when did he preach? (p. 165-170) that he elaborates further in the appendix with references to dominant themes in Jewish literature. Not only does Grudem provide a right exegesis to answer these questions, but more importantly he also lists the implication to believers and the church throughout the ages (p.168). I am not going to discuss the details here but encourage the readers to read and study them for themselves.

What I take home from studying Grudem's commentary is as follows. It is technical but it is not boring or difficult for most laypeople. He brings up plenty of Greek words and the references where they are used in some other literatures, but he does so in an engaging manner. The purpose of orthodox theology is orthopraxy and ultimately doxology. I believe this is the principle with which we should always use when reading the Scripture which is Grudem's principle as well. This is where he does best that makes this commentary so enjoyable.

Exemplary Mid Length Commentary

Purpose: The purpose of this commentary, as is the purpose of all in the Tyndale set is to provide a medium length commentary aimed at the lay reader or pastor. It should not be too technical for the lay person or too brief to prove useful to the pastor. Discussion on matters of grammar and original language and interaction with other scholars should be limited. Wayne Grudem did a good job of meeting these goals. His commentary is a little on the scholarly side for the Tyndale series but certainly is readable for the average church attendee.

Things I liked:
1. In a relatively short space Grudem lays out an excellent introduction to the letter. In particular, he clearly and thoroughly lays out the case for Petrine authorship and a date prior to heavy persecution. I found his arguments against the letter being pseudopigraphic quite persuasive.

2. Grudem interprets the text in a very clear headed fashion. Consistently I found myself in agreement with what he said. He wades through the text and always seems to pick the common sense interpretation of the passage. Unlike some commentators, you will never find yourself asking, "where did that come from?" He sticks to the text and rarely reads too much into it. His reasoning behind his interpretations is explained when necessary and he also notes when he disagrees with notable scholarship. Also, much like his Systematic Theology, he displays his ability to pack a lot into a small space. He says much more in 239 pages than some commentators would in twice that length.

3. His appendix on 1 Peter 3:19, 20 is a masterpiece. It may be Grudem at his best. He spends 37 pages on those two verses thoroughly defending his interpretation on a highly controversial passage. Whether you come to agree with him or not, his argument is so evenhanded and well presented that it is worth buying the commentary for the appendix alone. One note though, the appendix is quite technical and some knowledge of the original language is necessary to fully benefit from it. There is a shortened, less technical version in the commentary proper.

Criticisms:
1. Eerdmans is a terrible publisher. As is typical with their books, the typeset is low quality. While it is always readable, in spots it is a little distracting. However, given the low price of the commentary you cannot complain too much.

Overall I give the commentary five stars because it does an excellent job of fulfilling its purpose. A pastor or well studied layperson probably should get an additional commentary like Schreiner or Michaels.

Exegetically Valuable

Wayne Grudem's work on I Peter gives helpful insight into the words and flow of thought of the letter. He handles the difficult passages with clear explanation and fair support of various views of meaning. It has been very helpful as I've taught through the letter. The only note of attention is he leans toward teaching that Peter viewed the church as Israel in this age in a few places where I believe the passage does not hint at this idea. He is not pushy with this theological view and it is not at all a distraction from the clear word studies and wonderful insights he provides in the commentary. I recommend this work for any serious teacher of God's Word.

Must have for someone learning the trade.

I have been a industrial mechanic for over 8 years, and one thing you learn, is no matter how much you know, you don't know anything in the grand scheme of things. Learning that is the single most important thing you can do, as being over confident in your abilities, and being a "know it all" will bite you eventually. Saying that, this book helps you fill in those gaps, makes you a better mechanic, and gives you TONS of information in a well written package. If you are just getting into the trade, or a 20 year vet, this book will have something for you. Some of the guys I work with have older revisions of this book, use it all the time, and have over 30 years in the company, it really is that useful.

So to summarize, never believe you have nothing else to learn, and pick up this book to round out your resources. You wont regret it.

The only bad thing (for me) is that the font is pretty ...

This is very helpful book! Very simple human's language. The only bad thing (for me) is that the font is pretty small, it's understandable why, but if you use this book somewhere with low light and your vision is not so great, you probably need to use glasses or even magnifier.

Frustrating

There are a lot of typographic errors in my copy of this book. The errors in cross-references are merely annoying; those that appear in equations are likely confound the novice. There are, of course, exercises presented in each chapter, but no solutions. Not even a simple appendix containing the final answers.

This book is a waste of money! I am currently an under-grad looking for some tutorial help for my Quantum course and purchased the book without reviewing Amazon's feedback reviews. Wish I would have done so before I bought it. Although this book provides some example questions with solutions, they are few. And the chapter problems don't have any answers to examine. This author or publisher needs to re-think their approach.

Horrible!!

I agree with Mr. Jones. I am an undergraduate taking physical chemistry and I find it extremely frustrating that there are so many typos in this book and there are absolutely no answers given. I have also noticed that Mortimer uses different variables for cylindrical and spherical coordinates than any other source I have consulted.

About the Author

Maxine Attong is passionate about writing, facilitation, and business process improvement. Her strong belief in the power of facilitated teams, the creativity of human beings, and the need for alignment between strategy and process has served as impetus to document her thoughts and experiences in the business process improvements field. Maxine is a graduate of the University of the West Indies (BSc., Accounting) and a Certified Management Accountant (Society of Management Accountants, Ontario). She is also a Certified Manager of Quality with the American Society for Quality, and a life and business coach. Maxine is the chief executive officer of eink Global Company Limited. The company exists to "enhance vision―one process at a time."

Terrence Metz is a founding principal partner and vice president at Morgan Madison and Company. For more than 20 years, through professional and academic endeavors, Terrence has focused on teaching people how to think rather than what to think. His experience has proven that the two most important components to high-quality decision making are:

1. Nobody is smarter than everybody.
2. There is usually more than one right answer.

Terrence is passionate about using and teaching facilitation so that people become more collaborative. Great for beginners, but missing key elements

I recommend this book to the process improvement neophyte. It is an easy read and understandable. The book provides a straightforward improvement process with best practices and facilitation techniques. The improvement process starts with forming a process improvement team and selecting processes for analysis and ends with evaluating new process results. If you have never done a process improvement project before this is probably the best step-by-step manual with lots of details and tools.
However, as an experienced business analyst I give the book a three star rating due to some disappointments with the book's improvement process omissions.

* Value chains and the danger of improving only sub processes rather than the entire value chain is not addressed.
* Stakeholder resistance was identified as a concern, but not as a source of risk. Resistance was not listed as an entry on the risk register.
* Risk was not clearly delineated as threats and opportunities with separate risk registers.
* Leading and lagging process measurements for composing a new process owner dashboard was not discussed.
* Non-value activities required by auditors were not clearly highlighted. If these activities are eliminated an unsatisfactory audit could follow.
* A hierarchy of process improvement proposals based on levels of process owner risk tolerance was not clearly discussed.

Had the above items been addressed, this would be a dynamite book deserving of a 5 star rating. But, it doesn't. With these omissions, I believe the book is overpriced. Perhaps one might rationalize the price considering a CD containing various tools accompanies the book.

A refreshing return to a practical approach in addressing fundamental business issues

Within recent years we have been bombarded by a plethora of business and management books, which have encouraged us to adopt a range of esoteric ideas, represented by such figures as Sun Zu, Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, Ghandi and even God, not to mention Star Trek, to provide answers to critical management issues. Maxine Attong's and Terrence Metz's book, "Change or Die: The Business Process Improvement Manual", is a refreshing return to a practical approach in addressing fundamental issues faced by businesses in today's world. The core strength of the book lies in its people centered approach and its involvement of employees at every stage of the business process improvement cycle. It confronts and provides clear and concise solutions for such critical issues as aligning goals and objectives to the overarching vision, determining the core processes that impact the business, change management and the establishment of teams that can effectively implement the improvements that are required. It provides an easy step-by-step methodology for substantially improving business processes and thus business performance. The book is filled with wonderful and perceptive insights that are often overlooked in today's business world, where the ethereal seems to have triumphed over substance. I strongly recommend this book

Great book!

Many business improvement programmes have stuck rigidly to one type of approach, however in today's global arena there is a new breed of recommendations for carrying out business process improvements. The new rules for such changes are highlighted in Attong and Metz, (2013) publication entitled Change or Die. The authors take a hybrid over- arching approach which draws on the good from previously identified methodologies and training techniques. The strategy applied to their methodology is one of facilitated teams and stakeholder engagement delivered through the creativity of individuals and the need alignment between strategy and process. Based on case studies their research summarises the types of engagement, team building and business process improvements that could be applied to a given project to bring about the desired end state. They conclude that no one person is smarter than everybody and that there is usually more than one right answer. Much of their research has included the use of Hurson's productive thinking model.

A very foundational missions handbook

This is a much needed book - for the missionaries knowing what they will need to get to the mission field AND being able to stay there well cared for. It also gives the Senders a clear picture of the needs of the missionaries and how they can do their
part in helping them to get to the field and be able to stay on the field, being well cared for. It also includes how to receive the
missionary back home - although there is another book that goes into much more detail on the Reentry process, called The
Reentry Team

When I bought this book at a local church's missions week, I thought I understood what the concept of sending was all about. Now I see it not just as an occasional thing, but a ministry in itself.

Please note THE CONTENT IS EXCELLENT. I've owned the original physical book for many years, recommended it often. One of the only books of its kind. It nicely accomplishes its purpose. The reason for 3 stars is for the Kindle version. There are no internal links. There isn't even a link for the Table of Contents. No links for chapters. The absence of links may not matter on a novel, but it's frustrating for a book like this because you want to zero in on a particular topic, but you can't. So the first thing I did was go through the book page by page, found each of the chapter titles and highlighted them. Now when I click on the list of highlights I get nine: one for the Table of Contents and one for each of the eight chapters.

So Sorry - Not Sorry!

I have looked forward to this novel now for almost 2 years and am very very sad to report that I was disappointed - this is not normal for me, I have read everything published by this author and have her books in Hardback, paperback and ebooks- I have read all of them multiple times so to be disappointed is somewhat a shocking experience and overall upsetting reaction from this rehashed and copy/paste from prior novels mess of a book. I do not feel that we got to know Bastien or his family or his enemy at all....I cannot understand how SK can write a detailed /wrenching / life changing/emotional roller-coaster books like Styxx, Acheron and all of the League novels and then publish this re-edited blip in time as a continuation of this epic series. I do not and have not until now written a bad review- I respect what the creative process brings to the table but I am truly brokenhearted and feel very let down right now by an author I have admired, believed, respected and trusted for years.

Lost all hope

Like many I waited for this book and I am really disappointed. I have given up on her dark hunter series after Dragonmark was released and I felt massive disappointment for how that story was told. But I held hope for her league books because so far they were well written if not a little confusing but after this book I am done. I will not waste money I could spend on other authors books who still try to write an original story. I'am deeply saddened as I really have enjoyed ms. Kenyon's books but I feel she is just going through the motions. The sad thing is if you read them you can see where she is trying to go and they are great characters and beautiful story's but with what I feel as a rush job it's just not worth buying. Beyond that I truly think sherrilyn Kenyon is a great author and it saddens me to give a negative review but I had to be truthful in the fact that I wish I had saved my money

Severely disappointed

I am a die hard SK fan. I have nearly every novel she has written and have re-read them numerous times. I was looking forward to Bastian's novel because he has flitted in and out of so many of her story lines and I absolutely LOVED Julian's book. That being said, I was completely disappointed with this book. I don't feel that I know Bastian any better now then when I started the book. I have no feelings one way or another about Ember, her sisters, her son or Bastian's newest brother. There was very little character development in this book as there has been in her past novels. I would have loved to know more about Ember's mother and father, some background on Riot Squad, etc. In past novels, SK had the ability to make characters jump off the page and allowed the reader to become invested in the characters. Sadly that was not the case with this novel. This novel was basically large chunks of previous novels already written. I understood what she was trying to portray by placing the reader back at the scene of each encounter with Bastian, however whenever the scene shifted to Bastian's point of view, the glimpse into his feelings and perceptions were fleeting and just a glimmer of what could have been. The ending of the book was the only original part of the entire novel and it was sadly very anticlimactic and for the first time one of her novels felt rushed and unimaginative.
Even more sad was the fact that the extra story at the end about Thia, Julian, and Nyk was the best part of the whole novel.

One thing I always enjoyed reading as a kid was those choose your own adventure stories. I remember always going to my library and asking for more. Well, I found this one and could not resist picking it up.

Plot: The great thing about this book is that is can go many ways. And you choose the direction. All the paths are in summer time, so the reader gets this great summer romance. There are 13 guys who you can end up with so I’m pretty sure any reader can find their match.

Did I find my match? Of course! With the hottie lifeguard named J.R. I basically chose what I would say or do. And ended up pretty happy with the outcome. I do plan on re-reading this story and choosing other options. That is the great things about this book. You can have many more different outcome with What if? Like what If I flirted back? What if I went and the met the guy? SO many options and its a pretty quick read too.

Go read this is you are looking for a different summer read. And read it more than once! You never know what will happened!!
