Creepy and Great!

Wow. Let me just say I was not expecting this when I started Shift. Honestly I only read it because my reading pile was empty. But once I started it, I was hooked.

Olive was popular, beautiful, fun, and bubbly, but when her dad left because of her suicide attempt, it all spiraled downhill. Suddenly Olive has a new life and is shunned, teased, and bullied by everyone including her ex-best friend, popular girl Katie. Only Ami sticks with her...but htere's something about her that's different. Something Olive never expected...
Newbie Miranda Vaile comes to town, niece of crazy Loony Oona and she's fresh meat for the vultures of high school. Yet somehow, she pushes everyone away and becomes Katie's best friend and confidant...but something creepy is happening because just as Miranda's looking more and more like Katie every day, Katie's becoming paler, sicker, and tired by the minute. Everyone isn't noticing it though, and soon enough Olive starts to doubt just what is real. Becuase, when you're going crazy yourself, who's to know what's real and what's not? Even when you know what's going on.

Em Bailey masterfully blurs the line between reality and imagination. I swear, there was not one time I was sure if what Olive saw and discovered was real or not! Em wrote beautifully, the prose leaning into paranormal then falling back into reality. The creep factor is high and I think that if anyone read this entirely at night...you'd definitely dream about it. Maybe not bad enough for a nightmare, but it will definitely leave an impression on its reader.

Olive was a great protagonist. Because of her problems, you, like I said, could never tell what was reality and what was her mind. I mean, Miranda would mouth words that Katie had said mere seconds later, act like Katie, dress like Katie, and slowly start to look like her. And even htough Olive suspected Miranda to be a shapeshifter, I couldn't be sure. Especially with what Miranda makes Olive realise. What was mind-blowing, though, was the fact that the most obvious things were the things that surprised me the most. When there was a twist, I would think "what? That's not possible!" But the more I thought about it, the more I realised how many hints were pointing at it.

There was romance! I know! I wasn't expecting it, but when the romance came I was pleasantly surprised! THe love interest was sweet and understanding and this was one romance where I loved the guy being kind and not mischevious and bad. The apocalypse is coming, isn't it? But yeah. Lachlan was just ADORABLE and I loved him!

Olive has been hospitalized for an unnamed mental illness, and now she has returned to school. She takes her meds, goes to class, tries to stay out of trouble. She spends a lot of time with her friend Ami. One day a new girl shows up at school, and there's something strange about her. Olive decides Miranda (the new girl) is a shape-shifter who basically sucks the personality and life out of a person. Miranda begins following Katie, the most popular girl, and soon Katie becomes really sick while Miranda takes Katie's boyfriend, Katie's followers, and eventually Katie's life. But no one believes Olive. They just adjust her meds and tell her to face her fears. Then Miranda turns her attention to Olive, and soon Olive feels the life draining out of her...

That description makes this book sound more interesting than it was. It was okay at the beginning, even with the creepy shape-shifting thing going on. About halfway through the book we discover that Ami is just a figment of Olive's imagination. Then Katie dies, and Miranda sics herself onto Olive. At that point I quit caring about what happened in this story. The thriller part of it wasn't thrilling enough, and the contemporary "chick lit" part of it wasn't realistic enough. It was just a weird mishmash of genres and it didn't really work for me.

This book might work for readers who like both thrillers and contemporary fiction, or fans of chick lit who want to break out of their typical genre. It does discuss mental illness, but doesn't give enough descriptions or information to be truly helpful.

When I was at the library, I was mostly looking for 2012 YA releases that I had missed but something about this book called to me even though I don't remember much buzz about it. Something about the concept just seemed so creepy and, although different from my usual reading fare, compelling.

When mousy Miranda Vaile arrives at Olive's school, everyone knows two things about her. 1. She's an orphan and 2. because she killed her parents. Yet as weeks pass, Olive notices that plain Miranda is looking like more while popular Katie is looking less. Research suggests to Olive that Miranda might be a shapeshifter but after "the incident," who would believe what Olive says?

Doesn't that sound deliciously creepy? The idea of shapeshifters is a fascinating one to me although I don't feel like it's one that is explored much in YA literature. Plus Olive's unreliability leaves you wondering if Miranda is a shapeshifter or if Olive just needs her medication adjusted.

The beginning of the book certainly lived up to that promise but the ending left me very disappointed. I don't want to give any specific spoilers but I wanted a big blow-up and instead the ending was more lukewarm with dangling threads. It is this dissatisfaction which led to my rating. Actually the whole of part two was pretty disappointing to me.

But part one had some interesting threads. Olive used to be Katie's best friend but she has since been relegated to the social outskirts. Her attempts to forge a new life, to find her real self are interesting especially how some of the points (like her love for the band Luxe) come into play in part two. Beyond Olive, there is her new best friend Ami, who I really liked, newish cute boy Lachlan (not sure about that name), and Olive's cute little brother Toby (I am a sucker for younger brothers lately it seems).

Overall: I found the ending of this book so opposite what I wanted that I find it coloring my entire reading experience into a negative one. I do not recommend this book.

Hunter, a well-published scholar on Iran and the broader Muslim world, places contemporary developments in postrevolutionary Iran in historical context. Throughout the book, the author seeks to explain what it means to be an Iranian and how the Iranian people define and redefine their cultural identity and grapple with issues of governance. Hunter traces the current debates about the issues of modernity, cultural authenticity, and political discourse among the Iranians from the dawn of the 19th century. She describes Iran’s encounter with the West and explains varied responses to this encounter, including those of nationalist, leftist, and religious groups. The strength of the book is that the author does not offer simplistic explanations to complex problems that have affected the course of political developments in Iran, prior to and after the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The author also does a masterful job of analyzing the interplay of competing forces that have shaped the formation and maturation of the Islamic Republic and explains major developments in Iran from 1979 to the present time. This is the best book yet published regarding the history and politics of Iran since 1979, which marked the rise of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Hunter brings equal focus and balance to her discussion of four significant periods: the ascendency of leftist forces from 1970 to 1997 under Hashem Rafsanjani; the Left’s revenge under Mohammad Khatami, 1997-2001; continuing polarization under Khatami, 2001-05; the rightest revenge under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, 2005-13. There is also a concluding chapter on the election of Hassan Rouhani in June 2013. Hunter examines the important dichotomies of Iran’s politics during these periods: between pre-and post-Islamic society, Arab and Iranian culture, Arabic and Persian languages, Iranianism and Arabism, Iranian-Turkic (Azeri) and Kurdish culture, Shi’ism and Sunnism, monarchy and republicanism, and Islamism and secular democratic constitutionalism. The author thinks that the growing connection between ideology and discourse has hardened the ability of Iran’s political elite to make the concessions necessary for a governing consensus. She thinks such consensus necessary if Iran is to meet the institutional, economic, and geopolitical challenges it faces, especially regarding relations with the US and Europe and with the Sunni Arab states of the Middle East. As a traveler and multilingual teacher, Paul has clocked nearly half his life outside the US. When he was a teenager, he slept on the streets of London to watch a royal wedding. He took the CIA exam because he wanted to be a spy for the good guys (and not the Good Company). He was an au pair in France and built a children's library in Africa.

"I write shorter stories that I would have wanted to read when I was ten, eleven, twelve-- realistic and exciting international espionage novels steeped in mystery, intrigue, and deception. I want children to see that the impossible may in fact be possible, and that children may have more power than they think. This middle school series is set in international locales because travel has made me feel alive and given me an insatiable curiosity to learn... which I feel absolutely driven to share with you."

My Son Loved This Book!

My son really loved this book! He couldn't put down, was reading it way past bedtime and even while he was brushing teeth for bed. He can't wait for the next book and wants to order it as soon as it becomes available. Great book for tween or early teen reader, suspenseful reading.

This was an excellent book, comparable to the likes of Alex Rider and The Hunger Games. The author fully enthrals the reader with a well-written book, satisfying to any spy-novel fan. I would recommend it for ages 10-14. (From a 12 year old in London)

A true page turner shimmering with action and wit.

I was looking for a book for my 12 year old daughter who had hit a dry spell with engaging books she was willing to read to the end. A friend recommended this so I bought it. I thought I'd take a peek and see if it might appeal to my daughter before giving it to her. I couldn't put it down.

This book is a rip roaring ride through Paris with a truly likable main character and a cast of supporting characters as colorful as a band of Rhald Dahl characters. It's a page turner packed with cliffhangers that keep the pace brisk.

My daughter caught me reading it obsessively and giggling at Aertker's comic scenes. I told her what I was reading and why and she immediately demanded I hand over "her" book. She slipped into her room and didn't emerge. I peeked in and asked her if she liked it and she told me she LOVED it. I let her stay up late and pried it out of her hands at 11pm. (Then I finished it!).

She read Brainwashed for the next two nights and finished it. She said, and I agreed, that it's the most fun she's had with a book in a loooong time.

I was a 4th grade teacher for many years. This novel has an exciting plot, intriguing characters, and short, snappy chapters that speak to the middle grade reader and keep the pages turning. The hero of this novel, Lucas Benes (pronounced like Tennis) lives in a hotel with an international group of rescued homeless children who are being trained by Lucas's adoptive dad to counter the efforts of a powerful international child trafficking organization posing as a legitimate corporation. The story starts when Lucas finds a baby left at the hotel he lives in and this discovery sends Lucas and friends on a mission that never let's up. It's funny, smart, cleverly plotted and has real heart. I think any child from age 9-14 would love this book (and so would their parents). It's good, clean fun and the author make Paris shimmer with life. Enjoy.

Dom X by M.S. Parker

This box set by M.S. Parker will entice you into finishing it as quickly as you can. This is Xavier ( goes by X) and Nouri's story and it is written with finesse. If your are a fan of BDSM stories this one has a twist that will surprise you. The Dom in these books are usually male and the sub is female. Due to the extent of X 's burns Nouri is teaching him how to be a Dom to give him back an element of control in his life.

X who is in the military was badly burned in a warehouse fire in a civilian accident which ended his career. On the day of the fire he lost everything that mattered to him. Nouri was his nurse from his admittance to the hospital through his discharge. Both of them were becoming quite attached to each other during this time but would not acknowledge it to themselves or each other. They both have secrets and past hurts that keep them apart.

When X is discharged he returns to his home in Philadelphia and when the priest who is his only family contacts Nouri to come to take care of him that's when sparks begin to fly. Into all of this add Nouri's ex-boyfriend and their mutual attraction that neither one is willing to bring out into the open. This story is extremely well-written and entertaining. The way M.S. Parker weaves all aspects of the story to the conclusion will keep you on your toes. Since I do not believe in giving any spoilers away I will let you know that this book is worth your effort.

Very very touching and beautiful book

Glad i wanted to read these as a boxed set! M. S. Parker this set rocks. Please note folks if you are thinking that this set is about Dom/Sub relationship than this might not be the one for you. This book is about a brave solider who while home on leave, saves the life of a boy and a man in a burning building. Because of this he was hurt badly. He was taken home to Philly by the priest who had basically raised him later in life.

One of the nurses at the hospital in Texas would sit by his bed and talk to him. It seemed that they had a connection even when Xavier or X was not able to speak. Nori later would come to Philly to care for X in many ways.

The Dom part of this book might throw you off a bit but for me it is really cool and loving and in a way it is how I think many folks find their inter-self or kink.
I highly recommend this book.

MS Parker this has to be the most emotionally charged book that you have written, the ups and downs had my heart all over the place.

I have to admit that after reading book one I was a little confused about how Xavier, aka X, fit into the title of the book, but once I started reading the next books in the series, it all started to make sense and this book did not disappoint.

Nori and X have moved to the top of my most loved couples from MS Parker, they both have emotional baggage that is holding them back from giving into each other and for X its also that he thinks he does not deserve to have something as amazing as someone like Nori. Running hot and cold with each other seems to be the norm for X and Nori, and then even colder when Nori's ex shows up and confesses that he wants her back. The ups and downs between Nori and X will pull at your heartstrings and have you crossing your fingers hoping that Nori and X will realize how perfect they are for each other.

Will things work out between Nori and X, or is it too late for them?

He was supposed to produce this mythical fiancee for a weekend aboard his parents yacht to celebrate their anniversary. He decided to hire the leading lady of a play he had to attend for business. Grace took the job because that would let her pay off the mob jerk who her mother owed money. He not only threatened her mother but her also. Grace felt something special with Chase, like she was home safe. This is the story of that weekend and beyond. Are the feelings real? Do they go both ways? Will she be able to get the mob jerk off her back or will he target Chase also? A wonderful well written read.

This is a very good introduction into the theories of political economy. It covers classical and neo-classical theories, as well as Marxian and Keynesian critiques. Notably missing is Polanyi. Sometimes a bit difficult to read, but then again, this is political economics...
