From Kirkus Reviews
A romp through the tumultuous life of Wu Jao, China's only empress. In her first novel, McCune tells an intricate story of lust and rebellion spanning two generations in seventh-century China. At 13, Wu Jao, the second daughter of a minor nobleman's wife, is summoned to serve as a concubine to the Emperor Taitsung. She is placed in a section of the emperor's harem that is scandalized by internal conflict and mysterious deaths. Still, as she has been instructed by her family, Jao remains obedient and keeps her suspicions to herself. She does befriend the caretaker of the emperor's children, thus getting to know the royal heirs. But when Jao deduces the identity of a murderer within her harem and realizes that she is to be the next victim, she goes directly to the emperor--a highly risky and unheard of act. Her frank and gutsy attitude, however, wins the affection of the emperor. The two develop a closeness that becomes the envy of the higher-ranking concubines. When the emperor dies, his concubines are permanently moved to a convent. But the new emperor, Kaotsung, remembers Jao fondly from his childhood and sends orders for her to return to the palace. This unusual act disturbs his jealous wife, who is eventually dethroned, allowing Jao to rise to an even higher status. As the story proceeds, Jao uses her insight and savvy (both personal and political) to become the closest confidante of the emperor, after whose death, when none of her children can govern as well as she, Jao assumes the throne. McCune's expertise in Asian studies is apparent, but the story drags at the end. Filled with the trials and tribulations of palace life, this book often reads more like a creatively written history book than a novel. We meet many characters, but few other than Jao display any depth. -- Copyright 1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Please don't judge the book by its cover.
By belle
While the cover may be a thousand years off, we would do well to attribute this mistake to the publisher not the author. As a scholar currently researching the Empress Wu Zetian I can tell you that coming up with historical information on her can be tricky and difficult. Yet, Evelyn McCune does a masterful job of filling in the historical outlines of Wu's life into a believable and somewhat plausible (although a bit romantic) account. If the job of historical fiction is to make historical sympathetic, then McCune certainly achieves this end- a laudable feat given that the historical figure in question was one of the most violent and ruthless despots in Chinese history. McCune not only humanizes Wu Zetian, but justifies many of her actions (even if some of the less noble moments are glossed over.) The book should not to be taken as the gospel truth, but it is a very enjoyable novel. Then again, that's why they call it historical *fiction* isn't it?

Wonderful topic, atrocious writing
By Jenny Zhang
I discovered this book while browsing amazon on my kindle. I am an avid reader of historical fiction, and recently, I've been enamored with books about the ancient East. When I discovered this book, I went ahead and bought it for my kindle despite the 3 star rating. I had assumed that the criticism was from the kitschy and inaccurate cover art, and decided to give the book the benefit of the doubt (and adhere to the adage about judging books by their covers). However, after plowing determinedly through this book, I seriously regret my purchase. The product description says it is a "captivating epic" - I beg to differ for several reasons.

1. There is little to no character development, even the protagonist, Jao, is decidedly one-dimensional. Part of this is due to the author's struggle with the third person narrative. The novel is told in a very objective fashion, and only very rarely so we see the subjective, third person omniscient. As a result, a huge portion of the book is wasted on Jao's actions - she walks, she sits, she sometimes does somersaults, and she chatters pointlessly with other characters. While actions are described with excruciating detail, they do not tend to give the reader any glimpses into any of the characters' feelings, thoughts, or motivations. The other characters in the book are little more than cardboard figures, with little purpose other than populate the book. The author also seems to have difficulty introducing characters other than having them introduced through pure dialogue with the main character. Imagine if an entire book consisted of characters making their appearance by saying, "Hi Jao, my name is so and so, I am from this family in this area of China, and I am a servant/eunuch/concubine/etc, I am so happy/unhappy to meet you."

2. The character interactions are very stiff and awkward. Oftentimes, it seems as if a character is introduced and a conversation is held only in order to interject some trivial historical fact about the time and place. Clearly the author has done some research about ancient China. This research must have been tediously awful for her, since she sees the need to make sure we're aware of everything she's discovered by injecting facts everywhere, regardless of the plot flow or appropriateness of the moment. Furthermore, the author seems very inconsistent in her characterizations, even for minor characters. An early example of this in the novel is Nurse Wang, Jao's nurse from her family home who accompanies her on her journey to the palace. During the journey, the nurse discovers that Jao's half-brother has stolen the jewels that Jao's mother had packed for Jao for her future life as a woman in the imperial harem. The nurse only sees fit to tell Jao this when Jao specifically asks about her belongings, and does so in a careless, off-hand manner that seems very unusual. Then when Jao begs her to help her retrieve the stolen jewels, the nurse insists she must be paid until she is shamed into helping by the other characters who overhear the conversation. Later, when Jao arrives at the capital, the nurse discovers she is going to be sent away. Suddenly, the author inundates us with various characters, including Jao, saying how Wang is a good nurse, and Wang herself is suddenly portrayed as the loyal old servant, who won't touch her mistress's money, even when offered to her.

3. The writing is not tight at all. This novel sorely needed a good editor. The author is unable to make the story progress without going through every step relevant or not. A week long journey in the story is exactly that - seven days splayed out before us, with the minutiae of the character's daily actions, regardless of whether or not the days contain anything that contribute to the plot. Better authors make the time flow, cutting tedious journeys where nothing happens to one line, "ie. It took a week of hard travel before we arrived..." and then fleshing out the really interesting parts of the story where action occurs by going into detail when appropriate.

All in all, I would not recommend this book to anyone. In fact, it was bad enough that I deleted it from my kindle after reading it even though I have plenty of memory space. I just couldn't bear the reminder of such a waste of time and money.

Empress
By Summer
The novel, Empress, by Evelyn McCune, is an extraordinary epic of one woman's journey through life to become a powerful ruler of China. This story begins with the young Wu Jao, an insignificant child, who is summoned to the palace to become one of Emperor Taitsung's new concubines. Because of Wu Jao's honesty, intelligence and logic, combined with her innocence and beauty, she earns the friendship and love of the great emporer. Upon his death though, she finds herself banished to a convent.
The new emperor, Emperor Kaotsung, remembers Wu Jao from his childhood, how fond of her he was, and sends for her to return to the palace. When she returns, she finds herself in a place of horror. She fights for justice in this land that has changed for the worse since Emperor Taitsung's death. Evelyn McCune writes wonderful descriptions of seventh-century China, both the land and customs, and the character of Wu Jao is bold, strong and inspiring, though she doesn't go into much depth on other characters. Some parts were long while reading, but this is a novel rich in content and enchantment. She combines sophistication with treachery and creates the perfect atmosphere for her story. This was a wonderful reading experience.

Someone cry for the children: The unsolved Girl Scout murders of Oklahoma and the case of Gene Leroy Hart, by Michael Wilkerson

June 1977. Three young Girl Scouts are horribly murdered on their first night of summer camp. The prime suspect is a legendary Cherokee outlaw who is said to use "black" medicine to hide himself deep in the Oklahoma hills. The two brothers sent to capture Gene Leroy Hart share their fugitive's Cherokee heritage, and call on other medicine men to help bring him in... And in a chilling struggle that goes beyond good and evil, in the most extraordinary manhunt and murder trial of our time, the white man's law and the Indian way clash irrevocably, leaving far more than three deaths unsolved and unexplained.

A great basic step by step cookbook.
By Mrs Brown
I gave this as a gift to my teenage cousin for christmas. He was certain it was a gag gift, but I have heard he has pulled it out as a reference in his few attempts to keep himself fed. A great basic step by step cookbook for someone who is truly clueless about cooking.

It was a gag gift for a friend who recently lost his wife and didn't know anything about cooking. I have used "Dummies" books in the past and have always considered them great.

Good Overview but Serious Gaps
By Matt in NY
Overall, this is not a bad book and in fact, Bob Marks deserves credit for providing so many illustrative applications. However, this is more pop astrology than a serious examination of Solar Return astrology. For instance, Bob doesn't really address the fact his method of "adjusting" solar returns is actually a subject of debate among astrologers (some find the method he applies, precession-corrected placements, to be intellectually incoherent). Another and more problematic gap is the fact the solar return is actually two return charts: when the sun returns to the native's natal position every year -and- the natal house that is returned in the solar return chart. That is to say, the degree that is rising. Both are critical in understanding the areas of life that the native should focus on/will focus on/will be brought to his attention. For instance, if someone wants to focus on enhancing friendships, that person can either place the sun (and hopefully some benefic heavenly bodies) into the solar return 11th house -or- return his natal 11th house to the ascendant of the solar return chart. The question "is it better to return a specific house to the solar return ascendant or to place the sun in the desired house of the solar return chart?" is a separate discussion.

The other element of this book that smacks of pop astrology is his all-too-brief interpretations of what each planet "means" in the solar return chart without regard to how the solar return planets aspect each other or how they aspect the native's natal placements. Simply, many of these interpretations are premised on a few anecdotes he relates. While it is true he's been practicing for several decades, and likely cultivated the most salient of examples, the overall content seems too reduced - precisely to appeal to as broad as audience as possible.

On balance then, this is a good book if you want to dip your toes into an accessible branch of horary astrology - but by no means is it a comprehensive resource to help the reader construct an optimal solar return chart.

Not a "Do it Yourself" book
By summerbreeze
I was intrigued by the title of this book. I had planned to travel this year on my birthday so I purchased the book assuming it would help me select a destination. Wrong! Unless you are a professional astrologer or purchase the software ($350) to run your solar return chart, this book won't help you with selecting a destination. I have a copy of my solar return chart from last year and tried to use the instructions in this book to determine where I should have spent my last birthday. Much too complicated for a beginner! If what you want is to know where to travel to on you next birthday, use the money you'll save by not buying this book to pay a good astrologer to give you the answer.

Only for those with plenty of time and money.
By W. Moran
Im glad they sent me the book on time, and in good condition. However this book advised us to travel to certain areas of the world where the houses in our chart will be postively affected.
This is nice if you are a rich retiree who has plenty of money and time to travel. Not to mention, what if you have to go to a hell hole like Rawanda for your houses to be affected positively? The author also assumed that the reader has a vast knowlege of astrology, not considering the beginners out there. Ive studied astrology for 3 years, and still barely understood the "lingo"and the rest.

Just And Unjust Wars: Incorporating The Lessons Of Operation Desert Storm, by Michael Walzer

A classic treatment of the morality of war written by one of our country's leading philosophers, with a new introduction considering the wars in Bosnia and Kosovo. Just and Unjust Wars examines a variety of conflicts in order to understand exactly why, according to Walzer,“the argument about war and justice is still a political and moral necessity.” Walzer's classic work draws on historical illustrations that range all the way from the Athenian attack on Melos to this morning's headlines, and uses the testimony of participants—decision makers and victims alike—to examine the moral issues of warfare.

By Eternal Student
Walzer is graying around the edges, yet he remains a significant tour de force in the world of Just War studies. This seminal work is a sine qua non read for any serious student of the laws of war. Many have rightly accused Walzer of being somewhat vague, however, to be fair he did groundbreaking work where there was a huge gap pf knowledge and largely contributed to our current understanding of how JWT relates to the modern hybrid warfare battlespace.

The Morality of War.
By tvtv3
I haven't read a great amount of books on military history or books about the ethics of war. However, I would be willing to wager that Michael Walzer's Just and Unjust Wars is the penultimate book about the morality of war. War is hell. It is a very messy business and leaders of nations don't always think things through thoroughly when faced with the possibility of an armed conflict and many times they do not even have the option of thinking things thoroughly. But what exactly makes a war a just war? Why are some conflicts that appear very similar actually quite different, with one being just and the other unjust? Why does it seem that America's involvement in Vietnam was unjust, but if the outcome or circumstances had been slightly different it would have been a just war? What's the big deal about the U.S. involvement in Iraq and why is there even a controversy about it? Many times people don't think about questions like these and often when they do their responses are rather shallow and unjustified.

Walzer has spent a great deal of time thinking about these issues and thoroughly explains how and why some wars are just and why others are not. The limit of consent, the war convention, the doctrine of double effect, intention, the nature of necessity, nuclear deterrence, and other ideas are examined and discussed in this book and each idea that is presented is backed up with examples from history (usually at least two). Walzer is a scholar, but the book is written in such a way that an average reader who has a foundation in logical thinking can grasp what Walzer means. War, unfortunately, seems to be a part of life (not peace). Each generation is presented with its own set of problems and possible conflicts. Though we cannot always prevent these conflicts, we should have a decent understanding of the morality of the wars in which our countries are engaged. Just and Unjust Wars is a great place to start.

Fascinating and Thought-Provoking
By Catch22
If you've ever found yourself questioning not only the justification for war, but the method by which wars are fought, then don't hesitate to give this book a read. Walzer offers a very comprehensive just war theory that can, despite what other reviewers have stated, be understood with ease by those without experience in philosophical texts. While Walzer does incorporate some key philosophical principles (self-determination, utilitarianism, ends/means conflict, etc.), these can be grasped with minimal outside reference and reading. In fact, the entire first chapter of the book can, for all intensive purposes, be largely ignored as it's concerned chiefly with establishing a reason for even considering a just war theory. As such, it simply argues against those realists who believe "all's fair in love and war" and that there's no room for a discussion of morality in war. Suffice to say, I believe that most people today would consider such an argument unnecessary. So, laymen shouldn't be discouraged when they begin by reading about the moral/political pragmatism of Hobbes and Thucydides -- just skip ahead to the second chapter if need be, as this is where the just war theory truly begins.

Essentially, Walzer divides his theory into two parts: (1) jus ad bellum (justice of war) and (2) jus in bello (justice in war). While the former pertains to the justification of waging war, the latter concerns justified conduct in war. Afterwards, Walzer offers a breadth of issues that may pose a dilemma for both his theory, and just war theory in general.

Among the topics covered by Walzer:

-the true crime of war (not just death and killing)

-war of aggression vs. war of self-defense

-rights of international states

-self-determination of political communities

-intervention & nonintervention policy

-wars of anticipation (preemptive vs. preventative)

-neutrality

-post-bellum punishment

-utility & proportionality in military action

-necessity of military actions

-rights of civilians & noncombatants in war

-emergency situations (does the end ever justify the means?)

-the morality of nuclear weapons

-responsibility of unjust acts (are soldiers responsible for following orders?)

While certainly not exhaustive, I believe the preceding list comprises the key issues Walzer discusses. In such discussions, he provides a wealth of historical examples to illustrate his principles - so that his just war theory also becomes a sort of history lesson in world affairs. Although readers are not going to find a clear, straight-forward answer to every question concerning warfare, I believe Walzer's work does provide, at the very least, a solid foundation for exploring any such question.

Some gripes w/ other reviewers:

Contrary to what another reviewer maintains, I don't believe Walzer focuses merely on Western conflicts. Both World Wars figure prominently in his book, and he includes a variety of events from just about every conceivable time and place. In fact, I'd say just the opposite is true - that Western conflicts play a minor role in his use of historical examples.

Some reviewers have pointed out the lack of attention Walzer gives to terrorism, or even the current Iraq war. First of all - pay attention to the copyright. Walzer first wrote this book in the 70's in response to the Vietnam War and it was last revised in 2000. Second, Walzer's treatment of terrorism is simple - terrorism kills indiscriminately, hence it's morally unjustified. His theory of jus in bello clearly argues against the killing of civilians and noncombatants unless such action is unavoidable in accomplishing a necessary military goal. Therefore, Islam offers no more relevance to any discussion of terrorism.
