Blood on the River, by Elisa Carbone

Twelve-year-old Samuel Collier is a lowly commoner on the streets of London. So when he becomes the page of Captain John Smith and boards the Susan Constant, bound for the New World, he can’t believe his good fortune. He’s heard that gold washes ashore with every tide. But beginning with the stormy journey and his first contact with the native people, he realizes that the New World is nothing like he imagined. The lush Virginia shore where they establish the colony of James Town is both beautiful and forbidding, and it’s hard to know who’s a friend or foe. As he learns the language of the Algonquian Indians and observes Captain Smith’s wise diplomacy, Samuel begins to see that he can be whomever he wants to be in this new land.

Starred Review. Grade 5-7–After attempting to steal back a necklace that belonged to his deceased mother, Samuel Collier is sent to an orphanage run by Reverend Hunt. The 11-year-old joins him on a journey to the New World, serving as a page to Captain John Smith. Samuel's account of the voyage to Virginia, political intrigues among the settlers, and the harrowing first winter of the James Town settlement brings to life figures like Smith, Powhatan, and Pocahontas. Details about food and daily life add realism to the story, and quotes from historical sources begin each chapter. This Samuel is more conflicted than the one in Gail Langer Karwoski's Surviving Jamestown: The Adventures of Young Sam Collier (Peachtree, 2001). His initial selfishness changes as he responds to the reverend, to Smith, and to his new friends. His time in an Indian village and his changing perspectives on the Natives add interest to the story and depth to his character. While the opening chapters move slowly, the pace picks up as Samuel reaches Virginia. This title is a good choice for a tie-in with the 400th anniversary celebrations of Jamestown in 2007.–Beth L. Meister, Pleasant View Elementary School, Franklin, WI

From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. Following Stealing Freedom (1998) and Storm Warriors (2001), both set in the nineteenth century, Carbone dips further back in U.S. history to the founding of James Town. Young orphan Samuel Collier narrates from his viewpoint as Captain John Smith's page, and the gripping historical fiction reflects Carbone's heavy reliance on primary source material, which she cites in an appendix. The dense particulars of daily life may tire readers who demand high-action plots. Others, though, will be easily caught up in the meticulously drawn scenes, from the fetid ship's hold to the snowy forests where Samuel learns to hunt with Powhatan friends. The cover, showing two crouched Powhatan Indians surveying the settlement, is a puzzling choice, particularly since the British characters are the focus. Still, like Joseph Bruchac's Pocahontas (2003), the text offers a view of Indian life that is far from the Disney stereotypes. An author's note offers more historical contest. A strong, visceral story of the hardship and peril settlers faced, as well as the brutal realities of colonial conquest. Gillian Engberg

I loved this book!

Samuel is on the streets, looking in the garbage for food. Then he goes on a ship with Richard, John Smith, Reverend Hunt, James, and a lot of gentlemen. The Susan Constant is a terrible place to be, but he knows he will make it to Virginia. The trip from England to Virginia is long, and many on the ship are sick. Will Samuel make it to Virginia? You'll have to read the book to find out. I recommend Blood on the River to ages 8+. I am 9, and I found it scary, fun, and exiting all at the same time. Happy Readings!

Great portrayal of Jamestown
By Irwin M. Fletcher
A MIDDLE SCHOOL READER WROTE THIS REVIEW.

Blood on the River is the story of Samuel Collier.
Originally Samuel was a street rat fighting for his life, but one night he is caught stealing a locket from a pawn shop that originally belonged to his mother (who is dead). The shop owner sent him to an orphanage who's owner is a man by the name of Reverend Hunt, where he meets many other boys and gets in fights with them. When Reverend Hunt decides to go to Jamestown he decides to take Samuel and another boy named Richard, who don't get along to well. Samuel is apprenticed to Captain John Smith. This is the story of how he survives in this new land and how John Smith and Reverend Hunt turn him into a man.
I highly recommend this book. I enjoyed reading it A LOT.

Interesting blend of history and fiction.
By Ann P.Butler
My granddaughter had to read this book over the summer as preparation for entering 5th grade in September. I bought 2 copies of the book so we could read it out loud together. I normally don't like history and fiction mixed together but this book is different. Every chapter begins with a direct quote from the actual daily journals of the characters in the story. These very specific historical events are then woven in that chapter into quite an adventure that brings history to life. It is particularly fun as the events are retold through the eyes of a pretty tough street kid who works aboard the ship and comes to learn about life, courage, and friendship as he grows into young manhood. My granddaughter loves it--especially the parts about the fistfights and the slop buckets! I love the accurate geographical precision of the story as well as the depiction of the Native Americans whom the settlers encounter in the New World.

Misleading
By Rosalie Hewitt
I was misled by the review and description of this book, it is not stories but organ music for an instrument I don't even own. Even if I did own it, I would like to know what I am getting beforehand. I was looking for the writings of John Lennon, and received this instead. So if you want the music for an electric keyboard organ thingie, by all means get it, but if you're looking for writings, keep looking.

Misleading review
By A Customer
I was highly misled by the review that is listed for this "book". I expected to receive a story by John Lennon. Instead, I received a song book for organ, piano, and keyboard, and I'm highly disappointed that I spent my money on it. Granted, it's a perfect book for someone who WANTS a "songbook". Needless to say, I didn't. The person who reviewed this book was definitely misleading in every sense of the word.

Okay for Beginners
By Paul A. Littlefield
I purchased this SONG BOOK recently (THIS IS NOT A BIOGRAPHY OR WRITTEN WORDS BY JOHN LENNON, THIS BOOK IS FOR PIANO/GUITAR(chords only, no tabs)VOCALS!!!) This book is definetly made for begginers and is not in the original key. Each note in the melody is labeled it's letter (C,C,C,B,E, etc.). The hardest the chords get is B flat or C7. Even then they put the C7 above the C in smaller print as an "Option". There is no bass lines, it is in large print. It's fun to play around with though, and I haven't discovered any mistakes.

Now that people are aware that data can make the difference in an election or a business model, data science as an occupation is gaining ground. But how can you get started working in a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary field that’s so clouded in hype? This insightful book, based on Columbia University’s Introduction to Data Science class, tells you what you need to know.

In many of these chapter-long lectures, data scientists from companies such as Google, Microsoft, and eBay share new algorithms, methods, and models by presenting case studies and the code they use. If you’re familiar with linear algebra, probability, and statistics, and have programming experience, this book is an ideal introduction to data science.

Topics include:

  • Statistical inference, exploratory data analysis, and the data science process
  • Algorithms
  • Spam filters, Naive Bayes, and data wrangling
  • Logistic regression
  • Financial modeling
  • Recommendation engines and causality
  • Data visualization
  • Social networks and data journalism
  • Data engineering, MapReduce, Pregel, and Hadoop

Doing Data Science is collaboration between course instructor Rachel Schutt, Senior VP of Data Science at News Corp, and data science consultant Cathy O’Neil, a senior data scientist at Johnson Research Labs, who attended and blogged about the course.

More breadth than depth
By Carsten Jrgensen
Book review - Doing Data Science by O'Neil and Schutt, O'Reilly Media.

More breadth than depth

What is data science? The book Doing Data Science not only explains what data science is but also provides a broad overview of methods and techniques that one must master in order to call one self a data scientist. The book is based on a course about data science given at Columbia University. However it is not to be considered as a text book about data science but more as a broad introduction to a number of topics in data science.

In the spring of 2013 I followed two Coursera courses. One about the statistical programming language R and one on Data Analysis. I had for some time been looking for a book that could be used as a follow-up reading on topics in data science. This was the reason I picked up "Doing Data Science".

The book begins with a chapter about what data science is all about is followed by four chapters on topics like statistical inference, explanatory data analysis, various machine learning algorithms, linear and logistic regression, and Naive Bayes. I have a background in both mathematics and statistics and I was able to understand these chapters but the material is covered in such broad terms that I find it hard to believe that a newcomer to this topics will understand or gain much knowledge from reading these chapters. Basic math is presented about the models but without some kind of detailed explanation one cannot develop any deeper intuition for the approach explained.

The best parts of the book is definitely chapter 6 to 8 and 10. In here we find interesting discussion about coverage of data science applied to financial modeling, extracting information from data, and social networks. I really enjoyed the examination of time stamped data, the Kaggle Model, feature selection, and case-attribute data versus social network data. The math behind these topics was however once again explained quite superficial. Centrality measures is central to social network analysis but it is very hard to develop intuition for there measures without a more detailed explanation about the underlying math. These chapters contains lots of useful resources for finding additional information about the discussed topics.

Data visualization is an integral part of data science for communication results. Beginners in the field of data science needs concrete and easy to follow instruction on how to get started with visualization. Unfortunately the book focuses more on the use of data visualization in modern art projects. The content is simply to abstract for beginners to learn about the usage of visualization in data science.

When I was browsing the book before actual buying it I was kind thrilled to see that it covered topics like causality and epidemiology. Topics that I did not found covered in any other book about data science. However the chapter about epidemiology is not about using data science in epidemiology but 'just' about using data science to evaluate the methods used in epidemiology. Likewise there seems to be no link between data science and causality. I later discovered that the authors used an entire blog post ([...] to explain why causality was part of the university course underlying the book. This material or parts of it should have made it into the book. I am still not convinced that causality is a topic in data science.

There are several examples in which the book assumes the reader to have knowledge of US government structure and organizations. Examples include page 292 when discussing US health care databases and page 298 where FDA is mentioned without further introduction or explanation about what FDA is.

A book than contains programming examples should always make the code accessible to download. Typing in the code yourself is simply waste of time. It is possible to download some of the datasets used in the book through GitHub. But the code does not seem to be available. I also own the electronic version of the book and I tried to copy-paste some of the examples from the e-book but there are several examples of code that hasn't been proof written or tested prior to publication. The sample code misses references to required R libraries or refers to computer folder structures on some local Columbia University computer. The companion datasets that can be downloaded on GitHub consists of a number of Excel files. The R sample code uses the gdata package to load these Excel files into R for further analysis. It took be quite some time to figure out why this process didn't work on a Windows computer. The gdata package requires Perl to be installed on the computer and this is not default software on Windows. In my opinion one should always publish data in a simple format, e.g. csv files and definitely not proprietary formats like xls for Excel files.

Data Science is both science and a lot of practical experience. I guess the title of the book Doing Data Science tries to capture that. You need to do data science in order to learn it. The covered topics are interesting but the material is more breadth than depth. Luckily there are lots of useful links and resources to additional materials. Personally I would prefer more details about the actual data science topics like e.g. extracting meaning from data and social network analysis and less focus on math. The book already requires some knowledge of math, statistics and programming, so why not presume that the reader has the background knowledge and dive straight into the data science discussions.

I really like the idea about having a lot of different people present various topics in data science and the book is well written and contains lots of useful resources for further studies of data science. I will recommend to book to people new to the subject but be aware of the fact that source code is not available and that is a major drawback.

Doing Data Science Worth a Look
By Dan D. Gutierrez
I found this book to be a very odd bird indeed. It is one book you can read from back cover to front cover and not be at a disadvantage. This is because the book is really just a collection of presentations made by various people to a class taught by the primary author Rachel Schutt at Columbia University in the Fall of 2012 – Introduction to Data Science. It wasn’t entirely clear what content Schutt was directly responsible for since only some of the chapters indicate who the contributors were (one of the chapters was contributed by a group of her students!). The co-author, Cathy O’Neil, I’ve encountered before as an outspoken blogger going by the name “mathbabe” but it wasn’t specifically stated how she became part of the book project, other than to say she was one of the students in Schutt’s class. Chapter 6 was partly written by O’Neil.

Both Schutt and O’Neil are Ph.D.s data science appropriate fields, but the book was not “written” by the two, rather they seemed to have performed some kind of editing function with the materials submitted by each contributor and added commentaries of their own. As a result, the book is a hodgepodge of anecdotes, factoids, R code snippets, plots, and mathematics, all from the in-class presentations. I enjoy seeing math in data science books, but the equations in this book were sort of just floating there requiring the reader to explore further at another time.

Although I have issues with the book as it is not any sort of text for the field, I did enjoy reading it with a number of “Ah, I didn’t know that!” moments. Schutt’s credentials in data science are considerable, having worked at Google for a few years around the same time that “data science” was growing up in Silicon Valley. As a result the book has many memorable anecdotes about the early days of the data science industry, and observations about what makes big data tick. I enjoyed the story about the Google software engineer who accidentally deleted 10 petabytes of data, and I think my favorite quote from the book is from the student’s chapter 15:

Kaggle competitions could be described as the dick-measuring contests of data science.

With contributor’s chapters on statistical inference, machine learning algorithms, logistic regression, financial modeling, recommendation engines, data visualization, Hadoop, MapReduce, and more, I’d say the book is worth a read, but not necessarily as a source of learning data science but more as a high-level guide and short historical account of this young industry. You get to learn about the people, companies, technologies that have collectively built the data science arena and you’ll be better for it especially if you are working to become a data scientist yourself.

A spoonful of sugar...
By Dimitri Shvorob
... helps the medicine go down, as Mary Poppins used to say. An IT-focused publisher, O'Reilly has twice before used the "book as collection of chapters by different contributors" formula in its foray into the attractive "data" niche, with such titles as "Beautiful data" and "Bad data". "Doing data science" - by the way, I prefer Hastie and Tibshirani's "statistical learning" to the fuzzy and grandiose "data science" - follows the same approach, but, with its subject matter being closer to the academe, the company enlisted two young PhDs to steer the collaborative effort. Rachel Schutt took the lead as author and editor, and, assisted by Cathy O'Neil, produced an engaging, informal - you don't often see "science" in the title and "huge-ass" in the text - yet sufficiently technical to be hands-on, sequence-of-vignettes-styled book. Imagine a mash-up of a magazine article and a textbook. Neither part may be best-in-class, but their combination makes for a "unique selling proposition".

Well, maybe not a textbook. Most textbooks are carefully written and carefully checked. In contrast, when I see "Doing data science" introduce the ROC curve in three places, one of which translates the "O" as "operator", I can guess that this is a copy-paste of papers by three contributors. When Dr. O'Neil casually redefines an English word ("causal") to avoid rewriting a couple of sentences, or pronounces, on page 159, that "priors reduce degrees of freedom" - this is painfully meaningless, and neither term is defined, only name-checked - I suspect that she knows better, but just did not feel like spending more time on her half-chapter. Neither author speaks of their own projects - if this is the "frontline", then it's other soldiers' "trenches" that we are visiting. The occasional code listings are borrowed as well, thrown in without editing or comments. In this last regard, "Doing data science" lags far behind the book that seems to have informed its choice of topics, Peter Harrington's "Machine learning in action". (That's one suggestion - and if you want a good, accessible textbook, "Introduction to statistical learning" by James et al. is another).

None of it is going to matter to the book's target audience. "Doing data science" is aimed at beginners - and is bound to be interesting and useful to thousands of keen undergrads and adult learners.

Lost Over Laos: A True Story Of Tragedy, Mystery, And Friendship, by Richard Pyle, Horst Faas

In 1971, as American forces hastened their withdrawal from Vietnam, a helicopter was hit by enemy fire over Laos and exploded in a fireball, killing four top combat photographers: Larry Burrows of Life magazine, Henri Huet of Associated Press, Kent Potter of United Press International, and Keisaburo Shimamoto of Newsweek. The remoteness of the crash site made a recovery attempt impossible. When the war ended four years later, the war zone was sealed off and the helicopter incident faded from the headlines. But two journalist colleagues-the authors of this book-returned to Laos twenty-seven years later to resolve mysteries about the crash and pay homage to their lost friends.

From Publishers Weekly
This deeply moving and personal recollection of the lives and work of the only four combat journalists killed during the 1971 U.S. invasion of Laos is an excellent short history of an important part of the Vietnam War as well as a fascinating insiders' look at the rugged life of civilian photographers during wartime. Former Saigon bureau chief Pyle (Schwarzkopf: The Man, the Mission, the Triumph) and Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Faas (Requiem: By the Photographers Who Died in Vietnam and Indochina) worked together for the Associated Press in Vietnam and were close friends with the men who died, which adds depth to their biographies: Larry Burrows, whose famous work for Life magazine made his name "the most closely identified with pictures of armed conflict in Indochina;" the Vietnamese-born Henri Huet, whose work earned the Overseas Press Club's Robert Capa Award; the passionate young Kent Potter, who threatened the United Press International "to resign if forced to leave the war zone;" and Keisaburo Shimamoto, a seasoned Vietnam correspondent with the "high-powered" French agency Gamma who had just returned for his third tour of Vietnam as a freelancer. Pyle provides an excellent look at the history of North Vietnam's use of Laos for its Ho Chi Minh Trail to arm its soldiers in South Vietnam, and he shows how its success provoked President Nixon's invasion of both Laos and Cambodia. Most moving is Pyle's account of how he and Faas returned to Laos 27 years later to search for-and successfully find-the wreckage of the dead journalists' helicopter, along with some of their personal and photographic effects, a journey that becomes a tribute to every journalist who covered the Vietnam War.

From Booklist
Two journalists who survived their years covering the Vietnam War recount the tragic end of four who did not: Larry Burrows of Life, Henri Huet of the Associated Press, Kent Potter of United Press International, and Keisaburo Shimamoto of Newsweek. All of these photojournalists died in February 1971 when the Huey helicopter carrying them into Laos was shot down by North Vietnamese gunners. A taut narrative (by Pyle) combines with haunting photographs (taken and selected by Faas) to tell two stories: the first of how four brave men lost their lives in pursuing their hazardous profession, the second of how Pyle and Faas painstakingly pieced together the fragmentary information that has surfaced over the years about their colleagues' deaths. The first story exposes the inscrutable twists in the line separating life from death; the second highlights how patient investigators slowly accumulate clues as to the four men's deaths. A work of homage by journalists who have learned far more from their profession than how to beat a competitor to the newsroom. Bryce Christensen

Pyle knows his stuff and he knows how to tell it. He zeros in on a chopper crash during the Vietnam war in which several veteran correspondents and combat photographers are killed and uses it as a pivot point to relate the hazards and adventures of covering the war. He was there and he recalls a lot. He also remained dedicated to the mission of following up after to war to find out exactly what happened in the crash, why and exactly where it happened. It is an intriguing search that brings back in a rush the entire traumatic experience. An exciting read that sparks memories of a compelling era. Highly recommended.

Gone but not forgotten by their peers.
By Fedoradude
Dead professionals remembered thru the eyes of their peers - who decades later found their crash site.

The photojournalism world lost probably four of the top 10 of the time when their VNAF helicopter got blasted from the air by the NVA. Each are profiled as individuals from how they came into the profession until the day they died.

Then this book continues with Faas' and Pyle's interest in finding their final resting place. They joined a team of military anthropologists and archaeologists and investigated possible sites in the jungle.

A very interesting read.

Memories
By Art Giberson
Lost Over Laos brought back many memories and a few surprises. The biggest surprise was learning that Kent Potter was probably one of my students at the Naval Schools of Photography in 1966.
Although the authors referred to the school as "The Marine Corps Photography School" in Pensacola, FL, it was actually the Naval School of Photography. All Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard photographers received their training there from 1925 until 1998 when the school was relocated to Fort Meade, MD

As it so happened, I was an instructor at the school from 1965-1969, I don't recall actually instructing Kent, but if he went through the school in 1966, he would had to have been in one of my classes.

Wonderful book with a lot of memories. Highly recommended.

Crash, by Drew Jordan

This is a dark, erotic thriller intended for mature audiences. Not a traditional romance, but a love story with a twist that will leave you wanting more.

The greatest love stories begin with blood…

There is blood. There is pain. And there is him. These are the first things I register when I wake up, the lone survivor in an Alaskan plane crash. He carries me to safety over rough terrain and brings me to his cabin in the woods. He has no name. Or none he will tell me.

As snow creeps across the harsh and isolated landscape, he is my only company. My protector, my caretaker. A fascinating enigma, with mysterious eyes, gentle hands, and a rough voice that demands more from me than I ever expected to give. I make up different stories, different names for him depending on his mood, because I know nothing about him except that he is my only connection to the real world I want to return to. So I work to please him, plotting my escape, yet all the while I start to crave him and every touch of his dominating body.

He has saved me from the cold. From death. But in taking me and my body, will he destroy me?

Dark and suspenseful
By heavenlycirce
**Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.**

"Crash" is written by Drew Jordan, and it is a stand-alone book. It features Laney and her rescuer.

Laney was the only survivor of an Alaskan plane crash, and we find her rescued by a mysterious man. Her rescuer takes her to his cabin where he watches over and takes care of her. There are so many questions about this guy, and yet, Laney is drawn to him. Simply put, she's addicted. Who is he? What's his name? Does he have good intentions? Why is he living so far away from the rest of civilization? Will anyone she's still alive?

This book was interesting. It was dark and erotic, but also had suspense and was a thriller. It's definitely not the typical happily-ever-after romance type of novel I'm used to reading, so it was a little hard for me to adjust to. The beginning was a little slow for me, but once you get to the middle, the plot thickens. And the ending was totally unexpected! You just go through a range of emotions while you read this, and it left a lot of questions. I think with the way the book ended, it left it open for a follow-up novel. "Crash" wasn't really my cup of tea, but I'm sure others will like it.

If you thought Charles Manson was sexy, you'll love this hero - Otherwise? Run!! Run for any other book!
By LadyLoves2Read
Oh, my God, what the hey did I just read? This is not erotica, it's sick.

The heroine is a spineless ick, who spends all her time with the man who 'rescued' her from a plane crash telling him she's sorry for existing, meanwhile waiting breathlessly for him to do her. And I will say for the first little bit of the book I thought okay, this is gonna be tense and sexy with an alpha hero who turned his back on society because of some deep pain, and a heroine who shows him tenderness is what he needs.

Holy ickerpants, was I wrong! The hero turns out to be a sociopath ( a person with no conscience for hurting and or killing others) the heroine a clinging vine willing to do anything to keep his attention, and toward the last, as big a sociopath as the 'hero'. She commits murder rather than just tell her old boyfriend to go away.

Okay, I'm off to scrub my brain. Hope you'll stay far away from this mess!

OMG IM OBSESSED!
By Zara Lethallan
Ever since I read this book, I cannot stop thinking about it. I have even told some of my friends about it. Along with half my family members (they don’t read, but I still talk about books with them). This book really is driving me crazy, I didn't know what to expect and it kept me guessing the whole time.

This book is twisted! Can I read it again?

The only thing I did not like about this book was the MC trusted easily. I mean come on! I know he saved your life, but he won't tell you his name. He lives in the middle of nowhere and you know nothing about him. I guess falling head over heels makes sense, since she is crazy too. I mean after learning just part of her past the only word I thought was DAMN.

Of course the book had to end in a cliffhanger, leaving me with the whole in my chest. I totally want more of this story and more of the characters. Even if they are crazy, I can jump on the bandwagon to crazy town.

This book just had to Crash my version of reality. (LOL I'm a dork, don't judge).

Logic models and learning
By Salvatore Alaimo
I teach a graduate course in program evaluation at Grand Valley State University, and I cover the development and use of logic models with my students. This book is a valuable resource for how to use logic models for program development, delivery and evaluation. In my opinion, an ideal world or programs is one where everyone had a logic model and that model was developed at the conception of the program. While it is never too late to develop a logic model for a program, the ideal time is when the program is being developed. This book is user friendly with its palatable writing style that is a pleasure to read. It provides the reader with strategies, and the nuts and bolts for how logic models can serve as the basis for our learning about our programs. I highly recommend this book and I am fortunate to be in West Michigan where I invite these authors to guest lecture to my class. Logic models are no longer just requirements from funders, they are a critical basis for why we have programs and their intended impact. This book is a helpful guide not only for individuals but also for organizations desiring to change their paradigm for how they view logic models, and those seeking to maximize the benefit from developing and using them.

A Road Map to Effective Organization Performance
By Dave Dempsey
This book is a marvel. It should be read by every nonprofit CEO and board member (and many others). It shows how logic models can usefully guide organizations from muddling to effectiveness. Lucid and jargon-free, the text is refreshingly understandable. It links theory and practice in ways that relate pragmatically to the nonprofit organizations I've served. New professionals will clearly benefit. Those professionals who have extensive experience will also gain by reading about the underpinnings of model development, which will stimulate their thinking and practice.

OK
By sherwood
I suppose a rating reflects one's expectations. I was disappointed. If you want to understand the workable basics of logic models you could find that in a one page summary. This book is often repetitive and is filled with the kind of bloated and un-friendly writing that academics are infamous for. Why oh why is it so difficult to write conversationally? It is such a shame that this topic is not better presented since it's a very important one.

There's a great irony here, since evaluations call for two skills that some might think are mutually exclusive - creativity and disciplined reason. Before designing or evaluating a program it's necessary to IMAGINE all the ways it can go wrong. (If that's even possible.) This calls for a creative mind. But, evaluations also call for discipline and a mind focused on all the details. What is particularly upsetting about the tone created by books repetitiveness and confabulated language is that bright and creative minds are bound to read this book and come away numbed by it all instead of energized, curious, and innovative. This book speaks to functionaries, not visionaries. We need them both.

There is a lot of good info here and I recommend the book for its knowledge. You'll have to work through some frustration to get it but it is a worthwhile read. Just expect it to be work and not enjoyable. And it's a shame it is that way. Academics are well known for their poor writing. They use verbs like "utilize" instead of the quite capable verb "use" in order to bloat and impress, and It's sad that young people entering this and other fields become indoctrinated to such poor methods of writing and communication.

I would not recommend this book for teaching, but it would be a great guide to have by your side in the field as a reference while getting a program or evaluation. If a basic English writing style guide were applied to this book it would probably get 5 stars from me.

The Penny-a-Worder, by Cornell Woolrich

Cornell Woolrich is "our greatest writer of Suspense Fiction" - Francis Nevins, Woolrich biographer.

Pulp fiction writers produced millions of words under intense time pressure in order to fill the pages of dozens of mystery magazines which filled newsstands from the 1920's through the 1950's. Some would argue that Woolrich's "The Penny-a-Worder" is one of the best pieces of fiction on the subject. First published in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine in 1958, this short story is not only a fun read about a pulp writer's life but is a wonderful example of Cornell Woolrich's later work and, for all we know, may have been a first-hand experience sufferd by Woolrich himself.

It's the later part of the 1930's and a struggling author by the name of Dan Moody checks into a hotel with an assignment to turn out a novella - literally overnight - with a story whose subject will coincide with artwork that has already been produced for the imminent publication of a "dime-detective" type magazine. With the publisher's voice constantly in Moody's mind and various distractions around him, the writer attempts to create a story worthy of publication.

Cornell George Hopley-Woolrich (4 December 1903 – 25 September 1968) is one of America's best crime and noir writers who sometimes wrote under the pseudonyms William Irish and George Hopley. He's often compared to other celebrated crime writers of his day, Dashiell Hammett, Erle Stanley Gardner and Raymond Chandler. He attended New York's Columbia University but left school in 1926 without graduating when his first novel, "Cover Charge", was published. "Cover Charge" was one of six of his novels that he credits as inspired by the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Woolrich soon turned to pulp and detective fiction, often published under his pseudonyms. His best known story today is his 1942 "It Had to Be Murder" for the simple reason that it was adapted into the 1954 Alfred Hitchcock movie "Rear Window"starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly. It was remade as a television film by Christopher Reeve in 1998.

A lighthearted look at pulp fiction writers
By Jim Lester
Cornell Woolrich was one of America's best crime and suspense writers. In this short story, however, he abandons the mystery genre for a lighthearted look at the pulp writers of the 1930s and 1940s. If nothing else, the story is a historical document, offering insight into the mindset and working habits of those prolific pulp writers of long ago. Published in 1958, the story doesn't travel well over the decades because much of the material is dated. But despite that, the story is still a worthwhile read by one of American fiction's real masters.

If You're a Writer-Don't Miss This Short Story
By Stepheny Forgue Houghtlin
I knew nothing about Cornell Woolrich until I read about this story on a blog I follow. I downloaded it because of a great review. Start with a delightful sense of humor, excellent writing, a mystery with not one dead body, and you will love The Penny-a-Worder. Every writer will learn something about their craft from this short story, and laugh at themselves when taking oneself so seriously. l I will definitely read more of Woolrich based on this little gem.

A short story from a great writer.
By Frank J. Bruno
Almost anything the Woolrich writes is great. He was thought of as a hack in his day. Now, many years later, his talent is recognized.

Japan's Imperial Army: Its Rise and Fall, 1853-1945 (Modern War Studies Series), by Edward J. Drea

Popular impressions of the imperial Japanese army still promote images of suicidal banzai charges and fanatical leaders blindly devoted to their emperor. Edward Drea looks well past those stereotypes to unfold the more complex story of how that army came to power and extended its influence at home and abroad to become one of the world's dominant fighting forces.

This first comprehensive English-language history of the Japanese army traces its origins, evolution, and impact as an engine of the country's regional and global ambitions and as a catalyst for the militarization of the Japanese homeland from mid-nineteenth-century incursions through the end of World War II. Demonstrating his mastery of Japanese-language sources, Drea explains how the Japanese style of warfare, burnished by samurai legends, shaped the army, narrowed its options, influenced its decisions, and made it the institution that conquered most of Asia. He also tells how the army's intellectual foundations shifted as it reinvented itself to fulfill the changing imperatives of Japanese society-and how the army in turn decisively shaped the nation's political, social, cultural, and strategic course.

Drea recounts how Japan devoted an inordinate amount of its treasury toward modernizing, professionalizing, and training its army which grew larger, more powerful, and politically more influential with each passing decade. Along the way, it produced an efficient military schooling system, a well-organized active duty and reserve force, a professional officer corps that thought in terms of regional threat, and well-trained soldiers armed with appropriate weapons.

Encompassing doctrine, strategy, weaponry, and civil-military relations, Drea's expert study also captures the dominant personalities who shaped the imperial army, from Yamagata Aritomo, an incisive geopolitical strategist, to Anami Korechika, who exhorted the troops to fight to the death during the final days of World War II. Summing up, Drea also suggests that an army that places itself above its nation's interests is doomed to failure.

The definitive study of the Japanese Army
By W. D ONEIL
It has taken more than six decades after its fall, but at last we have a fine, well-written, well-informed English-language history of the army of imperial Japan. Given the central role that the Japanese Army played in the history of Japan and East Asia generally for half a century, it is remarkable that it has taken so long, but we can be thankful for the result.

The book is superbly balanced and remarkably inclusive. Military, political, social, and economic aspects -- they are all there. It is all somewhat more condensed than one might wish -- an editorial choice, no doubt, rather than any limitation of Drea's knowledge. But the bibliography and notes provide a comprehensive guide to sources both in Japanese and English.

This is a very accessible book. The author provides a framework of historical background that can guide readers not familiar with the details of Japan's history, but does so in a graceful fashion that will not get in the way of those who know Japan better. In particular, readers who simply want to understand the Asian part of World War II clearly should find it easy and fascinating reading.

There is absolutely no way to understand the history of modern Japan without understanding the Japanese Army, and no other book on the Japanese Army in English that can begin to compare with this one.

There is a book of more or less equivalent excellence about the Japanese Navy, Kaigun: Strategy, Tactics, and Technology in the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1887-1941. But the navy was never as central to Japanese strategy or politics as the army -- the army really drove the train and Drea tells us how. It is best to read this book first, and then go on to the navy.

With the Chinese sounding steadily more like Japan in the late 1920s, this book could scarcely be more timely.

Everything you want to know about the Japanese Imperial Army (IJA)
By Carrosio Roberto
I could begin this review saying that reading this book you will be able to understand why Japan has been able to win the first Sino-Japanese War (1894-95) and the Russo - Japanese War (1904-05) and to lose WWII, but this book gives you much more , indeed it gives the IJA's most complete history that you can possibli find.
The author explaines how happened the transition from the samurai's time to the imperial army, he gives you a complete account of all the rebellions and the attempted coups happened in the Japan's history since 1853.
At the same time the author follows the IJA's technogical and tactical evolutions.
He explaines how Japan got involved in the first Sino-Japanese War and how he won it, then he follows the birth and the development of the causes of the Russian-Japanese War and he shows all the problems and the failures met by the IJA before to effectively win this conflict.
Then coming near to WWII, he is able to show how the IJA and the IJN (Imperial Japanese Navy) were not able to agree which would have been to be considered the next Japan's "true" enemy, indeed the IJA was thinking about Soviet Union, and the IJN was thinking about the USA, and because of the fact that in Japan it had never existed a political or militar control about both IJA and IJN, this question has never been solved , bringing to the absurd situation that both of them wanted an huge budget to fight, each, their own "true" enemy.
So, Japan has been able to unify, even before the WWII's beginning in Europe, two groups very different groups of nations, as Soviet Union and USA and the British Empire, in an undeclared coalition against itself, when Japan began the long war against China (1931-1945).
The book is full of first hand accounts, because of the author's access to a lot of diaries; the maps are detailed and relevant.

An Excellent Work on an Army Responsible only to Itself and its Emperor
By David M. Dougherty
This is an excellent, scholarly work, providing the American reader with an overview of the the history of the Japanese Army and its role in the rise of Japan from the Meiji restoration through World War II. My only criticism is that the book should have been three times as long as its 262 pages, since there were many subjects and incidents that needed to be expanded. Therefore, it must be considered as a comprehensive overview with many subjects to be expanded through further reading by those interested. Please do not take this to mean this work is introductory, however, it is much more than that. One might also read other works like the venerable "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword" by Ruth Benedict to more fully comprehend the Japanese culture that gave rise and support to the army.

Most history books pass over the Meiji Restoration as inevitable given the decadence of the Shogunate and the backwardness of Japan before Perry's appearance. Clearly, the restoration was by no means inevitable, and the military support given to it by two domains/provinces, Choshu and Satsuma, determined the makeup and leadership of the Army for many years thereafter. In Japanese culture, fighting was done by samurai, not by the common people, and indeed, it took some time before it was appreciated that individuals of common or humble origin could make good soldiers.

The pattern of brutality in the army arose out of the culture with the assumption that the common soldier needed to be brutalized to become a good fighting man. In addition, the army belonged to the emperor, not the country, and a militaristic spirit was taught to the soldiers as well as the people. This fighting spirit was supposedly able to trump all adversity, including material deficiencies, and as an outgrown of that, logistics and other service emements in the Japanese Army were neglected and often failed in fulfilling their roles.

Nonetheless, thirty-five years after the Meiji government began reorganizing the army, it was able to defeat a major European power, Russia. The text shows the difficulties in forming this army, which was more or less constantly in a state of re-organization the entire time. Officers were sent to French and German military schools for training, and European instructors were brought to Japan. Transforming small regional samurai forces relying on medieval weaponry into modern mass formations of trained common soldiers with substantial firepower and artillery was not easy to accomplish. But even by the Boxer Rebellion, Japanese detachments were proving their combat worth as equal to the Europeans.

This book does not focus on the Japanese Navy which underwent similar teething problems and development. The army greatly impacted Japanese politics as a separate force, and the Army Minister held a position of importance far above what a similar title held in the West. In addition, younger army officers were always capable of rebelling in the name of the Emperor and for the good of the state, usually paying with their lives for their actions. But Prime Ministers were assassinated, and the army was able to bully its opposition. On top of that, junior officers could even start wars, like they did at the Marco Polo Bridge. The army was simply a state unto itself, with the power to dominate the government and take the nation into war as desired.

Until after the Russo-Japanese War of 1905, the army leadership was undecided on whether it wanted Japan to be a regional power or a world power. Their preceived humiliation in the terms of Portsmouth led them to the latter course, a path that Japan had neither the population nor the material (including economic) resources to travel. Although the army prepared well for the next war with Russia, it became embroiled in a long war with China where their lack of population doomed their efforts at conquering China or winning a negotiated peace. Then the Navy pushed Japan into adopting a strategy of southern expansion -- a strategy for which the army was unprepared and could not fight. Although their armored formations were weak as compared to the Soviet Union's, the army had prepared for war with the Soviet Union rather than the United States. Against the US, their only chance was to cause the US sufficient casualties so that the American people would lose heart and call for their government to make peace (like they did over Vietnam.) Unfortunately for the Japanese, Pearl Harbor prevented that.

All in all, this is an excellent book, subject to the limitations given above. I recommend it to all those readers interested in Japan or World War II.
