Like most other human artifacts, the common pencil, made and sold today by the millions, has a long and complex history. Henry Petroski, who combines a talent for fine writing with a deep knowledge of engineering and technological history, examines the story of the pencil, considering it not only as a thing in itself, but also as an exemplar of all things that are designed and manufactured.

Petroski ranges widely in time, discussing the writing technologies of antiquity. But his story really begins in the early modern period, when, in 1565, a Swiss naturalist first described the properties of the mineral that became known as graphite. Petroski traces the evolution of the pencil through the Industrial Revolution, when machine manufacture replaced earlier handwork. Along the way, he looks at some of pencil making's great innovators--including Henry David Thoreau, the famed writer, who worked in his father's pencil factory, inventing techniques for grinding graphite and experimenting with blends of lead, clay, and other ingredients to yield pencils of varying hardness and darkness. The pencil's slow evolution from metallic-lead stylus paralleled the growth of engineering prior to the Industrial Revolution. YA-- An incredibly rich and complex history of this entirely unremarkable instrument of communication. Petroski explains the origins of its name, traces the search for suitable supplies of lead and wood, and explains why most pencils have six sides. He does all of this in an informative and entertaining style in a book made richer by its illustrations. The author does, however, have an ulterior motive. He uses the history of the pencil to provide numerous illustrations of the process called engineering, from design to manufacture and marketing. He also points out that engineering is a social phenomena, influenced by economic conditions, national rivalries, and other, often surprising elements. Many high school students, especially those with an interest in design, will enjoy this book. Portions of it could be used to provide lessons in economics as well as engineering and design.

Pencils!

The pencil is such a simple piece of technology that it is often ignored. No one gives it a second thought to lose a pencil or throw one away. In fact, it’s the only piece of property that we lend to perfect strangers with little or no expectations of it being returned. The pencil is just everyday debris, a technology so common that we don’t even think of it as technology. And yet a tremendous amount of engineering, imagination, and hard work of thousands of people has gone into the simple, humble wood case pencil. Such a simple technology that has played such an important role in art and science, in everyday writing, and in every students learning experience deserves more credit then we give it.

Henry Petroski has taken on the challenge to track down and retell the history of the pencil in all its wonderful minutia. Starting from its murky origin through its industrialization to its place in our modern society (of the early 1990’s) the pencil has had an incredibly complex history and mix of economics and creativity that is inherit to any engineering endeavor. For Petroski the history of the pencil is a perfect metaphor for what he calls the engineering method. He makes a pretty convincing argument for treating the practice of engineering in the same manner that we treat the scientific method. It doesn’t take Petroski much arguing to convince the reader that engineering is so pervasive in our everyday lives, that it warrants more study of how engineers perform their jobs and make the things we simply can’t live without. However, since much of engineering is tied up in drawings and diagrams of designs and solutions, that there simply aren’t enough eloquent engineers to explain the process to the public in the same ways as popularizers of science.

Luckily, Petroski is an eloquent historian, whose enthusiasm for his subjects is infectious. Now full disclosure here, I’m something of a wood case enthusiast, so I need little selling on the arcane history of the pencil. For most folks it’s a bit of harder sale, which is understandable of course. But Petroski does such a good job of making the history relatable and easy to read that it feels more like reading a general history rather than a dry history of some dull everyday object. It’s not a page turner by any means, but I think there is enough information and enough exploration of the engineering methodology to keep anyone interested until the end. Then again I could be completely blinded by love of the pencil that this could all be completely terrible and not worth reading. So yeah, I thought it was great, not sure if everyone else will.

More for the studios than casual reader.

Lots of interesting information bracketed between ponderous discussion. A scholarly look at an ostensibly mundane topic that certainly expands your appreciation for what it takes to manufacture almost anything when volume is a big consideration. Not a reference book to making pencils, more a philosophical look at technology and the path to developing a product. Covers the topic from many perspectives which gives rise to the notion that at times it meanders. Although it wasn't quite what I expected I did find it generally an enjoyable albeit lengthy read.

Somewhat of a boring read. Goes mostly into the history of graphite for pencil leads and the history of wooden pencils rather than the more interesting mechanical pencils. Good for pre-late 19th century information on pencil making and the companies involved, but doesn't get much into the more interesting mechanical pencils of the early 20th through 21st centuries.

My apologies to Britney

This book fostered a new understanding of my own fascination with Britney Spears and her fellow celebrity "trainwrecks." As an educated, cultured woman reading the news, I can't help but click on headlines that are nothing more than schoolgirl gossip. By the end of this book, I felt guilt, sorrow and ultimately empathy, which is what every tabloid article lacks.

Thought provoking

Excellent ; introduced me to names I did not know such as a Connie converse who my heart now bleeds for ; so many women ; how society Is unjust and if we are at all different labels us "crazy " I really enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would ; sometimes books seem preachy or take a dry note and become boring but this book is different. Its entertaining and fascinating. Highly recommended.

Encouraging read

I was interested in reading this book after having seen the movie about Arendt and her take on the Eichmann trial she witnessed. At least one other reviewer has mentioned that Arendt takes the idea of Philosophy as a theory, and moves it into the practical arena. I can't find anything so concise, if not eloquent, that would better describe what she's managed here. This is not a long book for what it achieves. I have never described a book on philosophy as a page-turner, until now. As the other reviewer I cited said, "Everybody should read this book". I would only add that even if you don't "think" you would like to read about philosophy, think again. Then read this and marvel at the wonder that is thinking.

A Thought Banquet

Arendt is not a philosopher as she herself admits. She often calls philosophers, with some light irony "professional thinkers", an expression borrowed from Kant. So, groundbreaking insights are not to be found in these volumes, at least it is not the point. What makes this book an absolute delight is the fact that this is a "symposium" in the truest original sense of the word (well, perhaps without drinks actually being served), it is a gathering of the most intense, influential minds in the history of Western civilization, where they discuss ideas with the author in a light and engaging manner, enjoying themselves, and you are invited! You can particiapte in the general discussion or have intimate conversations with them, up to you.

If an event like that were announced, and you got a pass, would you miss it? I wouldn't! This book is close enough.

Not An Easy Read, but Well Worth It

Before beginning The Life of the Mind, one of Hannah Arendt's last published books, I believe the reader would be well served by first having become familiar with some of Arendt's earlier, well known books, such as The Human Condition, Between Past and Future, and On Revolution. Ms. Arendt's thoughts and presentation are highly, and some might also say, tightly structured. Once the reader becomes accustomed to the distinctive manner in which Ms. Arendt expresses herself, the depth and richness of her revelations regarding the act of thinking make yet one more significant contribution to an understanding of ourselves from one of the 20th century's foremost cultural historians.

The boy/cricket is baptized Anthony at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. His parents live in the North End where his mother kept hearing the television advertisement "Anthony, Anthony, It's Prince Spaghetti Day" so they named him Anthony. "Naming him Anthony was straight forward, but naming him Tonino was at the brilliant suggestion of Dr. William Cooley, retired Northampton Ophthalmologist and avid italophile. His previous publications include over 150 scientific research articles, ten chapters for various books, and a laboratory manual for beginning entomologists. Stoffolano currently teaches a course at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in cultural entomology.

Science and Magic, an Engaging Tale

Tonino is an engaging tale of a shape shifting cricket who travels around the world learning life's lessons. Written by John Stoffolano, a professor of entomology with a strong interest in the relationship between insects and human culture, the story is a tribute to Carlo Collodi and the classic tale of Pinocchio and his conscience, Grillo Parlante, the talking cricket. Transforming between boy and cricket, Tonino has adventures that take him from his home in Boston's North End to Italy (where he discovers his family roots) then, joined by a female cricket companion, on to the American Southwest, Hawaii, New Zealand, China and Japan.
As an entomologist, Stoffolano seamlessly blends insect biology and science into Tonino's travels. As a humanist, he has created a story that is rich in family values, respect for generations, and the importance of leaving a legacy. Tonino's quest, Professor Stoffolano's interesting entomological asides, the charming illustrations and the useful bibliography, make this book an appealing read for all ages.

Insects get a good rap!

It's about time that insects were given a good rap! John Stoffolano's recent book, Tonino, breaks new ground regarding the use of insects, a cricket, to illustrate the need for humans to understand world cultures and engage serious thinking on pending world catastrophes, such as global warming. In a fantasy framework, Tonino is an exceptional cricket who morphs from insect to human and back and makes a world tour in which we learn much about human culture and insect life. As a fellow entomologist, I am impressed by the way that Stoffolano has carefully adhered to factual data and accurate biology yet weaves some most interesting fiction. This is a book to be enjoyed by general readers, young and old.
