Good purchase!!

The image here is not accurate to what I received in the mail which was to be expected. The image provided here on Amazon is the cover of the first volume of the manga, not the light novels. I knew what the cover of the light novel looked like and I got what I had expected to get. Simple issue with photos on Amazon not showing the correct product.

It was in good condition when I received it and I recieved it relatively quickly. I didn't need it by a specific date as a gift so I wasn't worried about it taking a week or two.

I own the rest of the translated light novels so this was a good add on to my collection.

Fun fact: The book was written before the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist anime was shown. Thus, the characters Russell and Fletcher Tringham can be found in the 2003 anime, making their first appearance in the 11th and 12th episode. The plot of the episodes follows the book pretty well and the two characters do go on to play a bigger role later in the 2003 anime.

This book was for my 12 year old daughter... she is a HUGE fan of Fullmetal Alchemist, and has all of the manga comics of the series. This book was a good addition to her collection. She loved it so much that she now is asking for the next book on this series... gotta' find it!!

You've got to like the series to stand reading this book

Alright, this book isn't exactly going to end up on any best sellers lists. As a writer I had to really stop myself from pulling out my red pen and giving it a thorough going over. Basically, it wasn't very well written and read like a synopsis of one of the anime episodes. This could have to do with the fact that it's a translation. Having read translations of other books from French and Spanish I know that they never read as well in English as they do in the original language. Of course, I don't read Japanese so I can't really vouche for the original.

On the other hand, it was enjoyable just becuase I'm a big fan of the anime and manga series. I felt rather silly reading it, since it felt juvenile to me. But I read it and... liked it, I guess. Well, it wasn't that bad. If you're a fanatic and not an English major, read the book.

About the Author
Scott Turow is the author of worldwide bestselling novels including "Presumed Innocent", I"nnocent", "Ordinary Heroes", " The Burden of Proof", "Reversible Errors" and "Limitations". His works of nonfiction include "One L", his journal from his first year at law school, and "Ultimate Punishment", which he wrote after serving on the Illinois commission that investigated the administration of the death penalty and influenced Governor George Ryan s unprecedented commutation of the sentences of 164 death row inmates on his last day in office. "Ultimate Punishment" won the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award. He lives outside Chicago, where he is partner in the firm of SNR Denton (formerly Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal).

Still the best account of law school.

Even though this memoir was first published almost 25 years ago, it is still the best depiction of what law school is *really* like. When I went to Harvard Law School (starting in 1995, exactly 20 years after Turow), everyone told me "It's not like One-L anymore." That's only half true -- One-L is overly dramatic, but the basic events and emotions he depicts rang true again and again. Of course, as the other reviews show, some law students are able to blow off the intensity, others (like Turow) become consumed by it, and the rest (like me) swing back and forth between panic and enjoyment. All in all, this is an excellent peek at the law school experience. Just don't use this as your only basis for deciding whether to go to law school and/or to Harvard.

Great and insightful read.

Great book! I found myself sitting in Scott Turow's shoes feeling the emotional, and often literal, ebbs and flows he experienced during his first year at Harvard Law School. This book reads like a fiction novel but the fact that it is non-fiction makes it an even better read and has helped me mentally prepare for the infamous "One L". I'm glad I bought this book and recommend it to any potential law student wanting to get an idea of what One L is like.

A Must For Future Exchange Students

This is an excellent book for anyone who's going to be an exchange student, as it gives the reader a realistic view of what going on the exchange will really entail. It covers settling in, homesickness, culture shock, making friends, learning the language, getting ready to leave, and "reverse culture shock" -- coming home again. Although not every exchange student may experience the stages in the exact order or extent the author describes, most exchange students will be able to identify with what she's saying. I found it very informative and comforting to read this book before going to Ecuador for a year, and it was also helpful to read during the exchange, simply to know that what seemed like bizarre feelings were really fairly normal for exchange students. Do yourself a favor and read this book before you go, you'll be glad you did. It'll leave you feeling a whole lot less in the dark about what's going to happen during your exchange.

A Culture Shock

I'm planning on going to France through a foreign exchange program next year. This book completely caught me off guard. It made me aware of the culture shock an exchange student experiences when adjusting to a new family and lifestyle. The book helps you prepare for your year abroad and for returning home to the U.S. It explains the (about) 8 steps of the exchange process and how each one affects the student. My favorite part of the book, though, were the examples from former exchange students. Their stories helped make the book more insightful, and they helped me to understand what I should do in different situations. I highly recommend the book for future travelers.
