Another Reader

First let me point out that the "error" mentioned by couple of reviewers are not errors. Perhaps the reviewers misunderstood or missed something.

The NY reviewer wrote

"

whic is fine. but then it is concluded that

\bf{R}_{b2a}(t) = exp(-\int_{t0}^t \Omega dt) \bf{R}_{b2a}(t_0)

which is wrong because $\Omega$ is a function of time. "

Actually this last line is in fact correct. I am not sure why reviewer think there is a problem. Perhaps the dummy integration variable t in the integral should have been

denoted by a different letter, but I think this is understood to be the dummy variable and not related to independent variable t. At any rate this equations is perfectly correct.

Also the "errors" pointed out by reviewers with title "Mixed Results" are not errors.

Matrix multiplication representation of the cross product has the right sign per convention that it is representing angular velocity of "a" frame relative to b frame.

Multiplying this by -1, would represent angular velocity of b frame relative to "a" frame.

The mappings from the quaternions to the Euler angles (Chapter 2 equations 2.47 through 2.49) are all correct. Perhaps the reviewer uses a different convention for the signs relative to reference and rotating frame.

The book itself is probably one of the better books if one is not afraid of mathematical rigor (of course Mathematical rigor itself is relative). It does a nice job of blending the inertial navigational with system theory and Kalman filtering methods.

Mixed Results

I purchased this book mostly for its technical content and less for its descriptive narrative about inertial nav and GPS. My goal was to use the book as a basis for some analysis. Unfortunately, I can't recommend the book to someone who can't re-derive the equations in the book.
One reviewer from New Mexico wrote: "There are some math errors [in Farrell & Barth's book] that are obvious, but when trying to use a text as a reference I don't think it's my job to double check the author's math!" But, lo! I think one NEEDS to check the math in this book because even the most trivial of computations can and do have errors in them. For example, one thing really irksome about the book is that the matrix representation for the cross product operation in Appendix A has an overall factor of (-1) buried in it -- and it's wrong. Then the authors happily propagate this interesting "sign convention" throughout the book, meaning that you have to do a double take each time the book uses it. It's a horrendous mess.
The same NM reviewer also asked: "Can I trust this book as a reference?" I think it's hit or miss. I spent over a week deriving and implementing the equations in Chapter 6. And even though I have some experience with coordinate frames and dynamics in rotating frames, it took a lot of effort to work through everything myself and correct the errors. Luckily most of the final equations are, indeed, correct in Chapter 6 -- save for a sign or two. On the other hand, I'm still trying to find the book's sign errors in the mapping from the quaternions to the Euler angles (Chapter 2). Is there really an error? Or am I doing something stupid? With this book, I'll have to figure it out for myself.
This book has the potential to become an excellent reference and resource for inertial nav and/or GPS nav information. But as it stands, it's a sketch of a book that leaves it up to the reader to wonder whether it's him/her that's missed the point, or the authors who mangled yet another equation.

I have struggled throught the first 2 chapters of this book and can't believe how poorly written this is. Mathematical derivations suffer from "logic leaps" that are not at all intuitive. Coordinate frame definitions are adequate, but more figures are needed. The text references figures with Greek symbols. When you go to the figure the symbol is missing or changed to another symbol. There are some math errors that are obvious, but when trying to use a text as a reference I don't think it's my job to double check the author's math! I contacted McGraw Hill about an errata sheet for the text. They don't have one available, but said they would be glad to accept my inputs. Can I trust this book as a reference? I don't know! I'm a complete novice in the field of Inertial Navigation and I don't feel I'm qualified to "edit" their book for them. This is a poorly written book because it assumes the audience is as well versed in Inertial Navigation and GPS as the author. One final gripe is that Mathematical Notation is referenced in Appendix A of the text. When trying to read the body of text, you must constantly refer to this appendix to try and figure out what the author is trying to convey. It's not bad, but it makes reading tiring and slow! The appendix is fine, but the introductory chapters in a well written text normally introduce the reader to the notation gradually, explaining symbols and conventions. Later chapters can then use less and less explanatory text for notation. This book could really be a "home-run" with some good editing and a second printing.

I love this man's story & never tire of hearing it

I read the story "Escape from Red China" by Robert Loh book many years ago [over & over] until it just fell apart in my hands. The same will probably happen again & I will probably reorder again at a future date. I love this man's story & never tire of hearing it. Robert Loh's story is unique in that even though he had a American degree, he was able to use the Communists teachings within the system to avoid the death camps, firing squads & endless persecution that so many of his friends endured. [although he did not go entirely unscathed. I won't ruin it for you though, you have to read the book! ;D] He tells the story of being a very optimistic, starry eyed & bushy tailed young man going back to the homeland at the end of the Second World War with nothing but endless passion & hopes for the future. Although his father could easily see through all the Communist rhetoric & warned him repeatedly about the Communists obsession with control, the young man, Robert, refused to listen as he thought his old pa was just from another generation & didn't understand. It wasn't long until he soon out dad was right, of course & once coming to that breakthrough had to devise a way to escape where he wouldn't get caught & none of his friend would suffer for being friends with him. It's an excellent book in that while reading it, you never know what's going to happen to Loh [I don't think he did either!] from day to day & it's up to his own cleverness & ingenuity to stay alive & one step ahead of the game. For me, it was a real page turner & it makes you wonder about his life here in America. [did he ever marry? have any kids, grandkids? ect ect] He's not listed in Wiipedia so I couldn't find any info about him.] Anyway, it's a gripping book & I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to read about that time when Mao & the Communist Party 1st took over China. [nothings changed all these many years later, it's still the same]

Rory Miller, author has served for 17 years in corrections as an officer and sergeant, working maximum security, booking, and mental health. In 2010, he began collaborating with Marc MacYoung for a police verbal de-escalation program. That program became ConCom. Functional and Profitable

Louis L’Amour’s fictional character, Chick Bowdrie, walked a thin line. He could have easily fallen in with the outlaws, and nearly did so, but was grabbed in the nick of time by the Texas Rangers. And so throughout the short stories and novels, Bowdrie’s ability to think within the mind of the bad guys made him a brilliantly competent and successful Texas Ranger. This capacity to think from within the predator’s mind runs throughout Rory Miller’s works, which is what makes them highly beneficial. Miller, a veteran Law Enforcement Officer and corrections sergeant, has pulled together another fine resource in his 168 page paperback, “Conflict Communication: A New Paradigm in Conscious Communication.” This is a book about communicating in tense and tight situations, whether at work, in in the home, at the pub, or on the street. It is written for Law Enforcement Officers, employees, supervisors, and men and women in all walks of life.

“Conflict Communication” is the meat-and-potatoes material from the author’s communications course. It presents the reader with a workable model for navigating communicative landmines, roadblocks, and traps. Miller follows an evolutionary pattern of how the brain functions and human consciousness operates. The most primal is what he calls the lizard. This is the hindbrain where the most primitive survival instincts lodge. The more developed is what he denominates the monkey brain. That part of our consciousness, the limbic system, which swims in the emotional stream and is concerned with status, social behavior and keeping the tribe alive. The most developed is the human brain, the neocortex, the youngest and newest member of the brain family. It is slower, yet gathers evidence, thinks, and weighs the options, as well as cause and effect. It is from this three part paradigm that Miller works out how to, and how not to, communicate in the midst of conflict.

The author takes the reader through assorted communication dynamics where conflict, abuse, or aggression happen, and shows various ways to turn the tide. He explains and demonstrates the scripts we often fall into, their benefits and hazards, and how to break out of them when they’re not helpful. What hooks are, how to see them coming and not to get snagged. Different approaches to take in organizations when dealing with higher-ups, as well as untouchables. How to engage in active listening, use tactical apologies, build rapport, establish boundaries, and set up common ground. The book is clearly a “how-to” manual.

“Conflict Communication” is an easy-to-read volume, broken down into three sections, which are broken down further into shorter, bite-sized chunks. The author has made the material accessible and broadly applicable. As Miller puts it, everything “in this book is a tool. It can show you ways to understand how communications go wrong and how conflicts arise. It might even give you the understanding you need to make some profound changes” (130). It’s a book worth getting and investing your time reading.

Brilliant, insightful, and amazingly powerful stuff

Miller is one of my favorite authors and a genuinely good guy. He looks at the world a little differently than most and articulates his discoveries better than anyone so I've learned a ton of valuable information from him over the years, but this book takes it well beyond the next level. It’s insanely good. Really!

Great framework for dealing with all kinds of people and situations

Every day, you likely face some kind of conflict.

At least I do.

Luckily for me, it’s usually not the kind of conflict that will get me killed. Instead, I deal with more social conflicts than anything – with coworkers and with family and friends.

You might be thinking this is a martial arts book, but it’s really not. It’s actually listed under the categories of social science and violence in society.

It's a great book that I've dog-eared a number of pages in, certain I'll need to refer to them again someday when I find myself in a similar situation

A very presentative work of research in the field

A definitive classic, a must read from a brilliant mind. The book was a national book of the year back in the early sixties and is still avant garde. It should be required reading for all leaders in society of both the private and public sector. There should be an ethical requirement as well as one of profit when designing our modern cities and this book provides the windows for the proper viewing!

Classic Overview of the Development of Western Civilization

I first encountered this book in the 60's in high school, where it was a favorite of my history and social studies teacher. Ordered this copy because I had given a previous one away.

Mumford's theses are classic historical analysis and remain pertinent to today. Particularly his view that encroaching bureaucracy poses - as he demonstrates it has for millennia - the most significant threat to the preeminence of dominant cultures.

A comparative analysis of cities

Lewis Mumford deftly explores the formation and development of the city from its early Mesopotamian and Egyptian roots to its modern day manifestations. It is the logical extension of his earlier works on the subject, in particular "The Culture of Cities," which has been partially absorbed into this volume. Of particular interest to meis his analysis of the walled versus open cities, and the sharply opposing world views of the progenitors of these cities.
Mumford was particularly drawn to the early Hellenic and later medieval town planning ideals. He noted how the early cities knew their limits, and established satellite communities, rather than continually extend their boundaries. Loose-knit federations were formed, which were much more democratic than were the Roman and Baroque regimental cities.
He charts the evolution of modern city planning ideals, very critical of Le Corbusier's "Radiant City" and other megalomaniac ideas which arose in the 20th century. Mumford favored the "garden city" ideals of Ebeneezer Howard, which recognized the destructive impact of industrialization on urban centers; rather than those schemes which extolled the industrial city as the city of the future.
Mumford is careful not to over reach, or at least let you know when he is forming suppositions. His annotated bibliography is immense, and probably the single most compelling aspect of this book for those who want to read more on the subject. The new Harcourt paperback edition, which came when I ordered this volume, has a more handsome cover than that shown in this listing.

This book focuses on the development of new thinking in complexity and on the tools needed for this new thinking, i.e. the development of a new language for complexity. This new language is very much about how a nonlinear complex reality is part of real-world complexity. We can start thinking in complexity about the complex topics of our social sciences and humanities by making use of this new language. With the new tools and the new language, it will be possible to deal with the complexity of real-world complexity and to show the promise of harnessing complexity, by turning complexity into effective and advantageous complexity for our social sciences and humanities. It is the very potential of complexity as self-potentiating which makes complexity so beneficial for viewing and doing social sciences. The new tools and the new thinking in complexity may be considered to be the warp and woof of a new science of complexity.

About the Author

Ton J�rg has been an educational scientist since 1982 at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. He studied Physics and Mathematics at the University of Amsterdam (BSc 1970). In 1969, he started to study Psychology at the same university (M.A. 1977). He worked as an evaluation researcher in different national (on adult education, and physics education) and international projects (3rd SISS-International Science Project). In 1994, he finished his dissertation about the choice of physics as an examination subject. He has been involved in complex systems and complexity thinking since 1971. He wrote articles on invitation to open up a conversation on complexity and education, for journals like Educational Research Review, in 2007, and for Complicity, in 2009, with extended comments of experts in the field.

I agree with the reviewer who characterized this as a hodge podge of unrelated anecdotes and stream of consciousness associations. The problem is that when you reach some part that may be factual and may have some value, all the other stuff makes that conclusion untenable.

The most disturbing aspect of this book was the author's characterization of Tibet, the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Buddhism about which he obviously knows nothing. The monastic community in Tibet, prior to the take-over by China, was one of the most advanced, disciplined centers of learning anywhere in the world. The Tibetans had/have acquired near universal admiration and gratitude for their deep, careful analyses of the human mind and how it functions. Harvard, Yale and other top-notch US universities have, since the early1990s, sent their most highly trained specialists to confer with the Dalai Lama, stateside or in Dharamsala, to plumb the depths of his invaluable and deeply compassionate understanding of human nature.

This book documents well the growing environmental justice movement. I especially appreciate the consideration of many coalitions among people. By moving beyond theory and into practice, we can see how concern for environmental issues requires us to act.

A terribly biased selection of readings

This book is full of texts supporting socialism, supporting environmentalism, opposing large corporations. Where are the texts favoring the other side? If liberals are as open minded as they claim, why are the opinions expressed in the selection of texts all the same? It's disgusting that this biased piece of writing is used in schools.
