The Roaring Girl; or, Moll Cutpurse is a Jacobean stage play, a comedy written by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker ca. 1607-10. The title page of the first edition states that the play was performed at the Fortune Theatre by Prince Henry's Men, the troupe known in the previous reign as the Admiral's Men. The title page also attributes the authorship of the play to "T. Middleton and T. Dekkar", and contains an "Epistle to the Comic Play-Readers" signed by "Thomas Middleton." The Epistle is noteworthy for its indication that Middleton, atypically for dramatists of his era, composed his plays for readers as well as theatre audiences.

Don't get the Dodo!

I made the mistake of getting a few Dodo publications for a Shakespeare (well, early modern lit) class, and I really have regretted it. The only benefit is that they are cheap, but in buying a different version what you don't save in dollars is made up for abundantly in quality. Dodo press is bare bones unedited text which sounds fine (who wants to pay more for hundreds of extra pages of commentary you don't need?) but in reality it sucks (especially for a class) because you get so little out of it in the end. The only person I would recommend it for would be someone who has already made themselves very familiar with the play and is now looking to go back to the wording of the original version of the text. If that is not you, stay away from the Dodo!

The language can be a bit difficult, but it does have an interesting discourse on masculine women and morality in the early modern period.
