A Beautiful Book

This is a memoir of an American who travelled to Asia to teach English. I've done two tours of this duty myself and am always happy to have the chance to compare notes with another veteran. (I haven't lived in Seoul in years; it's mostly laziness that keeps me from updating my hometown on here, but a small part of my heart is still there, and it beat quite strongly as I read this book.)

The gold standard for such a book is River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze (P.S.) by Peter Hessler, who has contributed a blurb endorsing this book to the promotional material. (Hessler journeyed into the interior of China with the Peace Corps in the mid-90s; Levy did so a decade later, and while the two volunteers did not serve in the same regionk a side-by-side comparison of the authors' experiences is a useful way to track China's rural development in the intervening years.) It's a tearfully poignant tale of cross-cultural friendship and a chronicling of an ancient society in transition.

As for this book, the rather flip title and especially the kitschy cover illustration had me worried that this would read more like a cheap parody. But one shouldn't judge a book by its cover; it wasn't long before I realized that Kosher Chinese is, both intellectually and emotionally, every bit the equal of River Town. And that's high praise indeed.

The book strikes a slightly goofy tone, especially in the opening chapters, but that's only because the author is faithfully recounting his first impressions of a new culture; and when one is making the acquaintance of a society quite different from one's own, there are many times when one must simply bow to the absurd.

As it goes on, Levy becomes increasingly used to the rural Chinese lifestyle, and his descriptions of it take more and more uniquely local habits for granted, but he never fully acclimates to some of them. A recurring theme is the struggle to balance himself between respect for another culture which is in no way inferior to his own and the desire to share the experiences and perspectives of his American life. He recounts many failures to strike the right balance and often thinks back on a cynical Australian he met at a party who told him "They know what they want from you, and they'll take it and use it and leave the rest, no matter how hard you try to stop them." He often thinks back on Greg the Australian, as part of a larger theme of reflecting on how, in the name of "X with Chinese Characteristics," the Chinese assimilate elements of other cultures and mix and match them in ways that are hardly recognizable to someone familiar with the original article: sometimes amusingly, sometimes impressively, sometimes horrifically.

He encounters facets of Chinese society which are extremely jarring to him; sometimes (like abandoning kosher laws) he breaks his own cultural taboos and finds himself better for it, while other times (like witnessing an appalling case of animal abuse) he gives in to feelings of outrage which are likely just to make a bad situation worse. No matter how upsetting an incident may be, he never invokes some objective standard of morality but scrupulously avoids making cultural judgments.

Humor is present throughout the book--irreverent where Hessler would have been ironic--but it's far too intelligent to turn the book into the parody I had initially feared it would be. It's often used to dilute upsetting passages, but in ways that complement rather than compromise the pathos of the incident being described. One very memorable example involves Levy recounting how, despite the skill his Jewish mother and grandmother brought to the task of instilling in him a sense of guilt, not even they had prepared him for "Guilt with Chinese Characteristics"--which is what he felt when he realized there was nothing he could do to help a once-happy young girl who had been forced to drop out of school and collect recycleables on city streets: a victim of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.

All of these things are weaved together perfectly to produce a seamless narrative, but the strongest element is friendship. The book is filled with people who are separated from Levy by barriers of cultural misunderstanding, but who are nonetheless able to recognize mutual goodwill and establish unique, unusual, but definitely genuine and meaningful relationships.

The book is beautiful and heartwarming. It's a must read for anyone interested in cultural exchanges between the US and China; but beyond that, it rests on universal truths of diversity and commonality of human experience which anyone, anyone at all, can appreciate.

Funny, accurate look at Modern China.

Much in the tradition of "Iron and Silk", Michael Levy has written a very good first hand account of teaching English in China. Through his stories and the people he meets, the reader gets a good sense of what modern China is like. I liked the fact that the book focused on a part of China that is not the eastern 1/3 that we always here about. Shanghai and Beijing are very different from the rest of China. The book is funny too. For me, having travelled to China, I liked that the author talked about how there are no such things as a line in China, its is very Darwinian to wait on line in China. I also liked that he too noticed that the Chinese love John Denver and Take Me Home Country Roads. There are plenty of books out there where an American goes to China and is a fish out of water. Some are really good: Salzman Iron and Silk or China Road or River Town. And some are not. If you like this genre of travel narrative, you will like this book. The only problem that I have with books like this is the timing. The author was in China in 2005 and 2005 China is very different than 2011 China. For that, I recommend reading The Last Days of Old Beijing or China Road, two first person fish out of water narratives of China that are more up to date. Regardless, this was a great book to read.

Creative dissonance in the midst of culture shock

It's a tightrope, really, to write compassionately but not condescendingly about people in a culture radically different than one's own. And this writer pulls it off in grand style, writing with self-awareness and in a way that expresses respectful interest in even the characters at the edge of the story, such as President Bill. He conveys his curiosity, and yet he avoids voyeurism: not an easy feat.

All this said, it is a funny and poignant story. Here is a teacher who wants to give his best in a system where his methods and aims are, to put it mildly, out of step with the prevailing idea of pedagogy. And here is a human being intent on establishing genuine relationships while holding on to his own values, if not the precise rules, of his own culture. For such a gentle story, there is a surprising amount of tension.

In the end, the author is able to draw together disparate threads such as basketball, post-modern literature, and rural poverty. It is a strangely cohesive story, a crazy quilt held together by the author's frame of reference and point of view. I enjoyed it and, at a time when China's prominence is poised to eclipse the USA's, I learned from it.

I bought this book for school and found it pretty interesting. The photography in the book really was very nice. I could look at the photos in the book all the time. I have had other wiley books and they are all very good.

Really love it

I bought this because I needed an atlas that was easy to navigate. Let me just say, that I was not disappointed. This atlas contains some of the most beautiful maps in crisp colors and is easy to read and understand.

About the Author
Lawrence S. Cunningham (Ph.D. Florida State University) is the John A. Brian Professor of Theology Emeritus at the University of Notre Dame. He has edited and authored over twenty-five books, including Brother Francis: Writings By and About Saint Francis of Assisi; Culture and Values: A Survey of the Western Humanities; The Catholic Faith: An Introduction; Ecumenism: Present Realities and Future Prospects; Thomas Merton and the Monastic Vision; John Henry Newman: Spiritual Texts; A Brief History of the Saints; and, most recently, An Introduction to Catholicism. He has won three awards from the Catholic Press Association for religious writing and was the 2013 recipient of the CSC Spirit Award.

Jack Miles (Ph.D. Harvard) is Distinguished Professor of English and Religious Studies with the University of California at Irvine and Senior Fellow for Religious Affairs with the Pacific Council on International Policy. He spent 1960–70 as a Jesuit seminarian, studying at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem before enrolling at Harvard University, where he completed a Ph.D. in Near Eastern languages in 1971. His book GOD: A Biography won a Pulitzer Prize in 1996, and Christ: A Crisis in the Life of God led to his being named a MacArthur Fellow for 2003-07.

Delicious Hawaiian Recipes & Much More!

One of my favorite places to eat on the Big Island is Island Natural's Market and Deli. It offers a wonderful, wide variety of foods from vegan, vegetarian and entrees for meat-lovers, too! Now they have a fabulous cookbook that includes so many delicious recipes that I can now make at home. The cookbook index makes it easy to find vegan recipes and is simple to use. Many feature delicious fresh Hawaiian ingredients. This cookbook will definitely help me to start the New Year eating healthy and delicious foods! Spreading the Island Naturals Love Around the World

I was lucky enough to work next door to Island Naturals in Hilo, Hawaii and ate lunch there everyday. The food was delicious, nutritious and made with really fresh and healthy ingredients. I've since moved and one of the things I miss the most is eating (and shopping) at Island Naturals. I just received my cookbook and it is well written, easy to follow and everything I've made so far has tasted just like it did at Island Naturals. Even if you've never been lucky enough to visit any of the Island Naturals stores, pick up a copy and it will be just like being there.

Made My First Year In Real Estate a Huge Success!

I found this book on Amazon when I was just starting out in Real Estate. I read many of the how-to books because I wanted and needed to hit the ground running in my new career. This book, by far, was the most information-packed and practical guide to starting a real estate business. (By the way, another excellent book is "How to Become a Power Agent in Real Estate" by Darryl Davis).

I am an attorney and before starting my real estate career, I had my own law practice; and before that, I had my own computer consulting company-both successful ventures. I approached real estate from a businessperson's perspective and this book definitely speaks to the serious businessperson. There are so many books and articles telling new agents where to spend their time and money that by the time the agent figures out what works and what doesn't, they have spent their entire budget and an entire year, and have not made enough money to move on. That's why 70% of new agents drop out of the field by the end of their second year.

This book helps agents, new and seasoned, stay focused on the bottom line. Moreover, it answered the most important question for me--If I need to generate $80,000 in income per year (salary, not gross commissions), what activities do I need to do and how much will it cost me?

So many of the other books and articles claimed to have the winning formula by telling you that you must knock on 50 doors per week and make 50 cold calls per week to generate business. Their theory is that it must be painful if you are to be successful.

This book, however, gives you lists of ideas and says if you do "x" number of activities from this list, you can expect to receive "x" number of transactions per year. YOU get to pick which activities you perform (if you don't like knocking on doors, pick another activity--it does not have to be painful for you to be successful).

The other books tell you that you must know a lot of people--friends and family--and that you MUST call and hound them in order to get business. This book, alternatively, says that if you do not know a lot of people (if you are new to an area) or if you don't want to call your friends and family and beg for business, you don't have to. It gives you the formulas so that you can determine how much marketing you have to do with the "people I haven't met yet" group to generate the same results as you would have with your "friends and family" group.

Using this book as a business modeling guide, I closed just under $3 million in volume in my first year; and just over $7 million my second year. By my 3rd year in real estate, I had already broke through the $6 million volume cap that many seasoned agents hit as a glass ceiling and cannot move beyond. My manager with my first real estate company (Long & Foster) was hostile to my business model because she didn't understand it and because I was taking control of my own career. She wanted me to follow her formula and she wanted me completely dependent on her for my success (even though she never provided me with leads!)

Then Keller Williams came to Maryland! (Gary Keller, the author, founded Keller Williams to empower real estate agents to run their own successful businesses). I joined Keller Williams and now I am surrounded by agents and brokers who realize that the business is mine and that the broker's role is to support my success. They do not believe, like so many other companies, that the agent's role is to make the broker rich. This is obvious by the fact that they offer one of the highest commission splits in the industry, without charging a monthly "desk fee," and they share the profits with their agents! And their entire culture is based on the "Millionaire Real Estate Agent" business models.

If you are serious about approaching real estate as a business, you must read this book.

The Real Deal, Can't Recommend Highly Enough

After reading this book three times through I'm struck with one overriding sense, "OK, this guy gets it". Can one book successfully sum up what's needed for a successful real estate career.....yes.
I've been a real estate broker for 11 years and I've been to and heard just about every major "real estate trainer" out there: Wickman, Buffini, Stumpf, Kennedy, Ferry, Knox, Droz, DeLuca, etc. What they all offer are specifics of how they were successful realtors in their time. Which is really helpful, but what sets this book apart is that Keller looks at the challenge of treating your real estate sales career like a business. There is real wisdom here, not just about having a "successful" real estate career, but life balance, and personal fulfillment through our real estate business.
I know a number of other agents who have read this book and one thing I've heard a few times is "I wish something like this was around when I got into the business", which are exactly my thoughts. Keller has kind of a tough love approach to spelling out exactly what is involved in true mastery as a realtor producing at a very high level. Another thing I find interesting is that this book could be about any industry, any career. The disciplines and business concepts he describes are universal.
Keller starts with the open questions of essentially "what would it take for an agent to succeed at a really high level, and let's use a million dollars as a kind of random goal." He then builds with 1) finding the motivation within to climb this mountain, 2) How to earn a million, 3) how to net a million, 4) how to receive a million in passive income (a true business owner), and finally 5) how to put it all together with the key of focus driving your business.
Keller has a direct common sense outlook and writing style which I found refreshing.
This book applies to the new agent as well as a realtor who is already producing at a high level.

Have a successful business AND a life + security for the future

My sales went from $2.7 million in 2004 to $8.5 million in 2005. Now we're heading to towards $12 in 2006. Hot dog!

But it's not about the money! It's about being the best I can be. I have more time for my friends, family, and I am out of town enjoying myself about 8 days per month. Mostly weekdays... And I have the security of knowing that I am on-track for the business to run itself while I am unavailable for vacation, semi-retirement, or if something happens to me. (!!)

All it took was the change of MINDSET and mode of operating that I learned from The Millionaire Real Estate Agent: It's Not About The Money.

YOU identify what you want your Net Gross Commission Income to be, and how many weeks per year you want to work. Keller likens your approach to becoming a successful agent to training for your first marathon. If you had set your goals for only 10 miles, you would work long and hard and painfully to hit that mark in a few months. However, if you had set your goals more long-term to run the full 26.2 miles AND had a plan to get there, you would be breezing through that 10-mile mark with ease and grace. It would have been a foregone conclusion that you would have that 10-mile level of success.

The marathon is a great metaphor for real estate. How far can you run or walk comfortably right now? 1 mile? 3 miles? If you got up early and ran or walked and ate right and had a plan, you know that you be able to run or walk farther, faster AND you would probably be in the best shape of your life. The confidence and success you would feel would spill over to your improve your personal life.

Think of each mile as $1 million in production. $1-3 million is attainable by accident. After that, you need a plan.

Unlike the marathon, you don't have to get up and do a bunch of stuff you weren't doing before. You are going to be doing the same real estate stuff you were doing already, just a little differently. Ultimately, you get to sleep in!

Amid the mass deaths, the SCTU must decide between tacking down the person poisoning bar patrons in South Dakota or getting revenge for their fallen serial killer hunters. Finding this killer will bring more questions than answers, it will open old wounds, and force everyone to rethink what they know about serial killers.

Fabulous characters on another great case

I just can't say enough about how amazing this series is. After reading the first one, I was completely hooked. They are all simply amazing. The characters are so well written and believable. They are humanly flawed, and all make up an amazing team that draws on each others strengths and weaknesses. The cases are fascinating as well and each one is more intriguing than the next.

Each book stands alone, and could be read out of order, however the character development would be a bit off kilter if you did read them out of order. The lives of the characters progress through the books as one would expect, and picking up in the middle would leave you a bit confused by some character events and references. Each case, however, is tidily wrapped up in each book. There are a few running cases that are mentioned in the background, the Butcher is the only one that comes to mind but I can't swear that there's not another along the way, but the main case is wrapped up every book.

I highly recommend these books if you enjoy a good crime series. There's a good amount of action and fabulous characters who make it all happen.

Another great read!

With some book series, they tend to lose something the longer they go on. Not so with this series. This is the 9th book in the series and I find that the books keep getting better. If you have just found this book, but have not read the previous books, I would highly suggest starting from the beginning.

This series follows Aislinn "Ace" Cain and her team/family of misfits. They make up the Serial Crimes Tracking Unit of the US Marshalls. Her unit is headed up by Gabriel. She is also surrounded by Lucas, Xavier and Fiona. Her mother and cousin, Nyleena also with her. Then there is the reality part of the D&R series, Malachi Blake, who is a FBI agent in the VCU. The characters are a big reason why I love this series, other than that they are great stories that are right down my alley!

This book follows the team to South Dakota to investigate some poisonings, which turns out to be more than they appear. As the bodies start to add up, the case gets more puzzling. The questions are whether or not the team has met their match with this killer and will they survive to see him caught! As you think you have the picture of the puzzle coming together, you realize that you are missing a few pieces. To complicate matters even more, the team receives some bad news from home. With thoughts switching from the case and things going on at home, the team has a lot on their plates.

I am really enjoying the growth that is happening to Ace. I also like the fact that her team is noticing it as well as her. The little talk between Ace and Lucas sums it up nicely. The humanity side is coming out more and more, although she only sees the monster side.

I have to say, this book was a little rollercoaster of emotion, but I did enjoy a nice laugh at the end! Can't wait for the next one, even if it will be a bit of a wait this time.

If you like mysteries/action/thrillers, I think you will enjoy this series. If you are looking for a bit of romance a well, you will miss it in this series.

Another win for Hadena James!

First I have to admit that I love the Dreams and Reality Series by Hadena James and once I start one of her books I read it straight through, devouring every word usually in one sitting, definitely within a day. When Belladonna Dreams, book 9 was released earlier this month, I held off reading it so that I could hope to savor it when I did read it and hope to tide myself over until her next book is released.

That didn't happen- I devoured it. I loved this book from the first page - I loved the storyline, the new character development between Aislinn and Fiona. I thank Hadena for not leaving us with a "killer" cliffhanger ending like she has in books past but she still managed to leave readers waiting with anticipation for her next installment.

For anyone looking for something engaging to read, pick up this book. But you should probably read the whole series, starting from the beginning- you won't be disappointed.

Great base plan, but too many surprise, hidden fees

I rated this three stars because of his suggestions for eating a clean and healthy diet. The first half of his book is reviewing multiple diet lifestyles that have hit the market, and while I appreciated the overviews nearly every diet had a 'downside' besides personal friends of his, or diets that mirrored his own. He does state in the beginning of the book to read the diet reviews and choose one that fits best with your lifestyle, which makes it appear as though he's truly giving the reader an option, however with his 'pros and cons' list of each one he doesn't make any solution but his own seem acceptable.

If I had already been a follower of KC Craichy I may not have been so surprised at all the additional costs to properly follow his diet recommendations, but unfortunately before this book I was not familiar with him.

His base diet is fantastic - organic fruits and veggies, farm raised animals, wild caught fish - I'm looking for a clean, healthy way of living and his suggestions on that front are incredible.

What I didn't appreciate were his recommendation for smoothies throughout the day. Each smoothie recipe contains nearly 3 of his "Super Foods" from his brand of Living Fuel. I've bought whey protein powders in the past, so fine. When I went to the website, each container costs nearly $100! I'm sorry, but I'm not willing to spend a minimum of $300 to eat 2 smoothies per day - who knows how long the containers last with the amount he suggests be consumed. I'm hopeful I can find an ingredient list and possibly supplement his extremely overcharged products with something from another health food store that will be equally beneficial for a fraction of the cost.

For $0.99 on the Kindle, this was a good purchase. However, I would have been extremely disappointed had I bought the $16 version and read through nearly 300 pages only to discover I need to dish out hundreds of dollars to follow his plan.

Super Health, Super Book!

I was familiar with author KC Craichy from his first book, " Super Health, the 7 golden keys". My initial concern was that the Super Health Diet would be a rehash of the original book. While some of the original content is present, the new book has so much more information. Our family has a history of diabetes and dementia and we strive to do all we can to eat healthy and limit big pharma drugs. Surprisingly, these 2 diseases, along with many others, are covered in The Super Health Diet. The authors wholistic approach to disease prevention is timely. And, yes, it is also a diet as in weight loss. Unlike pure weight loss books, this diet book takes that uses a complete regimen of nutrition, sleep,, stress reduction, proper hydration, super foods, super antioxidants and so much more to create a healthy plan. I didn't think it would be possible to build significantly on his very good previous book, but Mr. Craichy has done it. If your family or any loved one, neighbor, co-worker , etc is not living with optimal health, buy them this book!!!

He is the Founder and CEO of a company called LivingFuel, Inc. and he has quite the story to tell about the health and weight issues both he and his former Miss Florida and Miss Florida USA wife Monica have had to deal with. Nowadays, K.C. is attempting to help change people's lives one person at a time with the powerful and effective strategies he has discovered to heal his own health problems. I think you'll enjoy many of the themes he hits on in this book because they are quite familiar to people who have been following diet and health for the past few years--and even some nuances in his thinking that will get your blood pressure up!
