By examining born-again Christians’ support of Uganda’s controversial 2009 Anti-Homosexuality Bill, the book’s final chapter explores the enduring tensions surrounding the message of personal accountability heralded by U.S. policy makers.

Preaching Prevention is the first to examine the cultural reception of PEPFAR in Africa. Lydia Boyd asks, What are the consequences when individual responsibility and autonomy are valorized in public health initiatives and those values are at odds with the existing cultural context? Her book investigates the cultures of the U.S. and Ugandan evangelical communities and how the flow of U.S.-directed monies influenced Ugandan discourses about sexuality and personal agency. It is a pioneering examination of a global health policy whose legacies are still unfolding.

Many of the chapters of this book are concerned with the latter problem. They attempt to explain why some sentences that should be grammatical according to the explanations given in conventional grammars are in fact ungrammatical. In this sense, the book can be called a grammar of ungrammatical sentences.... It deals only with those problems of Japanese -- and only a handful of them -- that are either completely ignored or erroneously treated in conventional grammars. For these features I hope that the book will give the reader a revealing account of a kind seldom found in other Japanese grammars or in grammars of any other languages. -- from the author's Preface

Some features of Japanese are peculiarities of the language, while others are shared by English and various other languages of the world. At times two features, one in Japanese and one, for example, in English, that may look totally unrelated on casual inspection turn out to be a manifestation of the same principle, either syntactic or semantic, which governs the two languages. Whenever possible each feature of Japanese that the book discusses is contrasted with the features in English that are overtly or covertly related to it, and the similarities and differences that exist between the two languages with respect to this feature are examined. Thus the book can also be called a contrastive grammar of Japanese and English.

The book reveals a wide variety of semantic and syntactic factors (some of them not very well known to linguists working on English) that control the usage of certain grammatical patterns. It also shows what kinds of sentences the linguist working on a nonnative language should check with native speakers of the language to prove or disprove his initial hypothesis. So in a third sense, Professor Kuno's study might be called a textbook of field methods in linguistic analysis.

Because The Structure of the Japanese Language is both descriptive and analytical (the generalizations given in the book have been developed within the framework of the theory of transformational grammar but are presented without recourse to the complex formalisms of the theory), it will prove useful both as a basic handbook of supplementary reading for second-year or more advanced courses in Japanese and as a source of material for students and researchers doing work in Japanese or non-Indo-European linguistics.

This book is not for the novice and will not teach you the "Structure of the Japanese Language", irrespective of what the title says. This book is written for people who have a solid(at least level 3) understanding of Japanese and a basic background in linguistics. This requirement includes fluency with the language and deep knowledge of the grammar. The author covers grammatical points that tend to cause problems for the non-native speaker. This book is more for learning how NOT to use certain grammatical forms, and for understanding why certain sentences, phrases would be considered awkward or just plain wrong by a native Japanese speaker. Until you have a strong mental repository of positive examples of Japanese grammar against which you can compare, this book is of extremely limited use.

The book itself is well written and may prove useful for non-natives of Japan who are fluent in the written and spoken language but would like to improve by learning certain concepts. For a real book on the structure of the Japanese Language check out Alfonso Anthony's Japanese Language Patterns(JLP). The Anthony book starts for ground zero and just works out more complex and elaborated sentence structures. FYI, the editions I've seen of JLP are all in romazi.

A wonderful (if technical) coverage of the language.

To start with, this is from the perspective of a person learning to speak/understand/read/write Japanese, not a linguist.

This book is NOT for learning the basics of the language, but seems appropriate for someone of approximately at approximately JLPT3-level. Users of Jordan/Noda's JSL program will appreciate the depth of the grammatical notes; users of programs such as Genki who may have been looking for slightly more technical coverage of grammatical points will appreciate this book as well. In some ways, this is like a more in-depth version of those "understanding japanese particles" books, or perhaps like picking a few chapters out of the "Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar" and going into each one in more depth.

I did not find the book immediately applicable to my Japanese study in the sense adding new structure or particle usage to my daily usage. Instead, when I came across sentences that were described as "non-grammatical" or "unnatural", I found that thinking back to the book would resolve some of my curiosity about "why" it was non-grammatical/unnatural. One thing the book does very well is explain that certain Japanese grammatical constructions are no more strange than their English equivalents, the examples of convoluted (but technically legal) English are marvelous foils for the explaining similar points in Japanese.

One complaint others might have is that the book occasionally spends too much time talking about the minutia of English, as opposed to Japanese. While true, this is relevant to the book's primary audience (linguists), and I do not believe this is enough of a detriment to reduce it from a 5 star rating.

Excellent Resource

I order this because I have been studying chord progressions in rock music to that in jazz and classical. I was not anticipating the full transcription with the horn parts. This is a great book if you are in a cover band and want to do some Chicago tunes.

Great book

Good book. However, some of the writing is a bit strange. It seems like some measure are left out. Where repeats should be, there are none,ect. It's just very strange writing. If youre going to transcribe these into a notation software be prepared. Notes and rhythms are correct, and thats what I got this book for. Also, not every song has a transcription for a Clarinet or alto. If it does, the tenor part is not included. So basically, only one woodwind is included for every song. Other than that this book is great. If youre band wants to do some Chicago tunes get this book

Great transcriptions, incomplete book.

I just received my book. The transcriptions are great... just like the record. Solos and all (i hope i can play the trombone solo well enough). However, the book stops at page 112, and "25 or 6 to 4" starts on page 114. I will not complain because I really only bought this for Beginnings, but it would be nice to have 25 or 6 to 4 too.

John Maeda is Sony Career Development Professor of Media Arts and Sciences and Director of the Aesthetics and Computation Group at the M.I.T. Media Lab. His media work and emerging philosophy have been profiled in the New York Times, Print, I.D., and numerous other publications worldwide. Exquisite, and if it's a bit bloated we'll let that pass

I have nothing but respect for John Maeda.
He's one of those rare people who stands at the cusp of three or four disciplines - say graphic design, programming, information architecture, and fine art - and exerts a gentle gravitational attraction on the long-sundered fields. He's a true practitioner of what E.O. Wilson calls "consilience," and I find his work unfailingly beautiful.
"Maeda@Media" is a far more comprehensive introduction to and summary of his work than his earlier ""Design by Numbers." It is also an exquisitely produced volume, and if it is occasionally self-indulgent (spending 60-odd pages on a graphic that spells out "IT IS CUSTOMARY THAT THE SIDES OF A PAGE BE NEGLECTED IN FAVOR OF ITS FRONT AND BACK" on their edges) - well, I'll forgive that. It's a gorgeous tome.
Maeda is doing vital and inspiring work; this book should be a kick in the pants to all those of us who work in any of the disparate fields his work touches upon: only connect.

Very Inspirational ...

I have some programming skills and a budding web designer. I was really impressed with this body of work, especially considering the time frame it covers. The value for me was that the reader gets an understanding of what the "artist" has rendered. You you have read any of Paul Rand's essays, you can identify the significance of this work. This book is not a quick read, but a meal of ideas to be savored. I am still savoring this book, and it is really one of the best books I have enjoyed.

I have always been impressed with John Maeda's work: "Tap, Type, Write" is beautifully interactive, "Design By Numbers" is extremely innovative. Professor Maeda's newest endeavor, Maeda@Media is no different. It is a monument to Information Aesthetics and an icon for Information Society at large. The book itself, is painstakenly crafted with different types of papers. The images inside evoke a million poignant words. Professor Maeda's insights are invaluable. John Maeda uncovers a rare beauty in computing.

Must read for any nursing mom...

I loved this book because it was so nice to actually see someone write black on white that it is perfectly ok to want to continue nursing beyond 12 months and even during pregnancy. It also helped me overcome the weird feeling I always had when my in-laws and parents questioned my belief in child-led weaning. Read it! It's a wonderful book.

I want to burn this book. It was recommended to me by a lactation consultant. I just wanted some helpful tips to wean my 2.5 year old. I did not expect to be shamed for being a working mother and having any desires other than making sure my child does not suffer even the mildest upset. What a load of misogynist drivel.

A must have for longterm nursing moms!

Overall, I'm very satisfied with this book. I wasn't sure if this book would actually cover "older children", because my son will be 3 years old in just 2 months and he is still nursing with no end in sight. I have been torn whether or not to keep going or if I should just gently start the weaning process, and this book has really provided the information and insight that I needed to make that decision. It covers a lot of information on 1 and 2 year old nursers, but also has information (just not a TON, but enough) on 3, 4, 5 year olds...and even older, school-aged children that are nursing. This book is a must have for all mothers nursing toddlers and all mothers even considering it. Highly recommend!!!

Simple Life Truths When Practiced Will Change Your Life

The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari exceeded my expectations. There are very few books I would consider life changing. This book however, I can confirm, changed my life, turned on a light in my thinking and certainly my destiny. I have read and reread it numerous times and highlighted the best messages applicable to my own life. It has been quite valuable and has arrived at a time in my life, when every word feels applicable as though the author has been sitting on my shoulder or visiting my living room. This book provides practical use for taking ownership of your life, controlling your destiny, your happiness. Guidelines for transforming your fears and controlling your mind. Self discipline, self control, self government, willpower which help create strong character and lives we choose to live with joy and truth. Following the simple guidelines provided can help transform your life into what you were meant to be, instead of what the world told you who you should be. I have shared this book multiple times and I have found that following and practicing the guidelines included in this book will change how you feel about yourself and ultimately how you contribute to the world. A lesson for me?

I enjoyed this book. It is a compilation of helpful and inspirational thoughts and ideas from all the other books and tapes currently marketed. Kind of a "cliffs notes" of self-discovery.

The author sets the fictional story in a hospital where an accident victim is recovering. He is met by his father, who he has not seen in decades, and his father gives him some advice and a letter before the father passes away. The letter contains details on three life coaches the son must go meet so he can learn and uncover his true self.

The first coach is a priest in Rome. The priest teaches him how to live wisely, using a metaphor of a stained glass window. You see life colored by your perceptions, like looking through a stained glass window you see things colored by the glass. Change your perceptions and life changes.

The second coach is the surfer, who teaches him how to love well. He teaches him to stop living in his head and start living in his heart. Live in the moment and enjoy what is happening right now. Everything you do comes from a place of love or a place of fear. Where are your thoughts coming from right now.

The third coach is a CEO of a brokerage firm. She teaches him how to serve greatly. Telling him you can get anything you want in life if you just help enough other people get what they want, and you must conduct yourself with the utmost integrity.

The majority of this book I have read or heard in other places. Its not new material, but it is presented in a new way. One part of the book talks about how every meeting with another person is your chance to learn something new. If you keep meeting up with people who are filled with problems or complaints, its because they are being sent to you so you can learn a lesson that you need right now. They will continue to be sent to you, UNTIL you learn these lessons.

I guess that makes sense. Maybe this book came my way because it contains a lesson I still need to learn?

Good beginner read

Great read if you are looking for something uplifting, but it's very beginner. I struggled a bit to keep going. Filled with great quotes, but is almost too packed with quotes instead of the author speaking for himself. I have read many many books on spirituality, the mind, consciousness, Buddhist teachings and theories, quantum physics. Some of my favorite authors being Eckhart Tolle, Dan Millman, Deepak Chopra, Richard Bach, David Michie etc, so I when someone recommended it to me, I thought it would be right in there. I just feel like I've read all of it before and was looking for something deeper. Really great introductory if you are just getting into spiritual readings though.
